We Know it Feels Good, but is it Healthy, Too?

Openmindedgirlk@xanga sent in a post about the healthy benefits of masturbation.
Here's what we learned from the FOXNews SEXpert!Even though there is much stigma around the idea of masturbation, there are several healthy benefits to the act of self-pleasure. While there are certain benefits for males and certain for females, there are several benefits that both men and women will gain from this - the safest-sex act.
- Masturbation is a great form of stress relief. While it's unlikely that you're going to come home from a long day of work and sit down ready to go, many people will take part in the act while showering or before-bed to help unwind.
- It is also a great mood booster. Thanks to all the endorphins that are released after an orgasm, masturbation is known to put people in a better mood.
- Unfortunately (or fortunately), masturbation is a natural sleep sedative. Like sex, masturbation can be physically exhausting, which may help exhaust your body into a slumber. But during an orgasm, the hormone prolactin is also released in a cocktail of hormones. Prolactin is known to be found in higher levels when sleeping, which can suggest a link between orgasms, the hormone and sleep.
- On the other hand, it can also be a known pick-me-up. Because of all the feel-good hormones released during an orgasm, you may also feel a certain energy boost post-masturbation!
Men may also reap the benefits of an improved immune system and a healthier prostate, while women can enjoy the benefits of building a resistance to yeast infections and relieving lower back or menstrual-related pain.
Did you know about all of the added health-related perks to masturbation?

Yup! I wish more people saw it this way.
I did know! There have been studies that have shown routine masturbation reduces the risk of prostate cancer (also sex - basically, orgasm does!).
But most of those SHOULD be obvious...I think people don't find it unhealthy, just "immoral" or something like that.
@steph@datingish - I did notice some of this. How about the idea of sex being like exercise? I heard a celebrity has sex with her man a lot, and that's how she kept a tight and fit body. That's quite a benefit.
I thought everyone knew these things. I guess it sucks for the people who find it impure and immoral then.
I always said when I started having sex, I'd totally do the guy thing and just roll over and fall asleep. It works way better than any medication or warm milk could.
Nod. Difficult to rely on people to have sex with 3x a day every single day at specific timings, so this has to do. Need to maintain elevated Testosterone levels.
Is Healthkicker only about health for the body? There is more to the health of the human being than the body, and not everything that has health benefits for the body benefits the rest of the person.
@mynameisblueskye@xanga - Damn, I wish my sex habits would keep my body tight, haha.
I love masturbation!
@pinkdagger@xanga - It's not so much the physical act itself that is the sin (although some Christians will say it is, but that's debateable). It's the lust factor that is sinful, and I think it would be pretty difficult to masterbate without lusting...
I'm not surprised. I enjoy masturbating, and it seems to help with my chronic respiratory problem...or maybe it just takes my mind off of it for awhile. But neither of those is a bad thing!
I did know, and often I use masturbation to help myself sleep.
Gosh...masturbation for fitness!
Well regardless of how funny the thought of that is, this article could be on to something. After all, we all do it... right?
Innovative thinking for sure.

Actually, you're sadder after masturbation. It releases all your endorphins and then your body has a lack of them.
@stayfitshaun - "After all, we all do it... right?"
Nope.
@Ancient_Scribe@xanga - hehe
@pinkdagger@xanga - My thoughts exactly.
But Fox News...really?
Number 3 is why I usually rub one out before bed. It's tough for me to fall asleep a lot of times, but after I masturbate I hardly ever have trouble.
@Ancient_Scribe@xanga - Yep. We all do. Just because you don a religious ensemble doesn't mean you don't do it behind closed doors. It's human nature, and nothing to be ashamed of.
@Ancient_Scribe@xanga - You're missing out on some health benefits apparently. But you're commenting in the wrong place. You need to go to www.revelife.com and leave us alone!
@FadingFromSight@xanga - Not everyone does, and you don't know Jacob.
I DON'T MASTURBATE... I FIND IT DISTURBING FOR SOME REASON... I MEAN I DON'T MIND SOMEONE DOING IT TO ME BUT DOING IT MYSELF IS JUST WEIRD FOR ME
I've actually found my depression since I stopped fearing masturbation has pretty much completely gone way. (I was a very sheltered Christian for most of my life. Until I discovered the internet, but man am I glad I did.) :P It really comes in handy when your single and also helped me come into terms with my sexuality. It also helps me with anxiety, but that might just be me.
wait, it relieves cramps?!?
horray for fingers and dildos!!!
XD.
Honestly, I didn't think there was such a stigma on masturbation anymore. I hardly ever hear of anyone be ashamed of it. I mean, it's not necessarily something you shout out in the middle of the crowd, but neither are most sexual things, even if they're just between a husband and wife. Discretion and stigma aren't the same thing, really.
I don't know anybody who is ashamed of it. :p
However, I thought everyone knew about the health benefits of masturbation these days, which was what I thought might be a contributing factor in it becoming something people considered "normal." :p
