  • Your Birth Control Pill May Change Who You Like!

Your Birth Control Pill May Change Who You Like!

According to a report in the "Trends in Ecology and Evolution" journal, your birth control pill may alter your sexual appetite - and who you're looking for to satisfy it, too.

Although they do claim that the study is too premature to make any serious conclusions, "Trends" goes on to explain that, because the pill controls the menstrual cycle, women who are on the pill are having less fluctuation in their hormonal balance - and thus less fluctuation in their sexual desire.

Normally, women become more aroused (and sexually desirable to men) before or during their period, and because of this, they are drawn to men who they feel are capable and who seem responsible enough to handle a family. Now, with women on birth control, because they are not having fluctuating sexual appetities, they are more likely to be attracted to an average Joe.

However "Trends" does point out the fact that the birth control pill's pros outweigh the cons, and does not believe that this study should promote women to go off of the pill.

Have you heard of this study before? Would this "conclusion" sway you enough to go off of birth control?

I wish it could change who liked me!

  • goblinsinthemirror@xanga

I've heard of this before, but I heard that women were more likely to pick "bad" mates, as in a male who isn't looking to stick around for a while, isn't good for marrying or having kids with.

  • bleujinxpwns@xanga

Wow.  That explains a lot... .  I'm getting off birth control!!! >=( (j/k)

  • CrAdLe2daGrAve@xanga

NO I'M NOT GETTING OFF BC 'CUZ I'VE BEEN WITH THE SAME GUY FOR THE LAST 3 1/2 YEARS AND I HAVEN'T ALTER MY "SEXUAL APPETITE" AND NO I HAVEN'T HEARD OF THIS STUDY BEFORE

  • Imnotcrazyjustinsane@xanga

I always thought women seemed more attractive while they were ovulating. That would make more sense because ovulation is the peak of fertility during each month.

  • BlehhItsTu@xanga

Hahaha, let me feed one to my crush, and he'll like this Plain Jane right here. XD

  • Vacantwhispers@xanga

Yes, I've heard about it. I've never been on BC.

  • Passionflwr86@xanga

Very interesting. Makes me glad I'm not on B/C anymore.

  • faerienoodles@xanga

That is...a little bizarre. But I suppose it makes sense, if you think about it. I always got more compliments, especially about my skin and complexion around the time of my period--once, someone told me I had that 'joyful, pregnant, glowing look.'

My mom wasn't too happy about that one...

  • FallingSafely@xanga

I  have heard of something similar to this. I've never been on B/C. Have had many doctors try for other reasons other then actual birth control. But I always refused.

  • tracezilla@lovelyish

I've never heard of this study until now. I think it's BS, though. I know plenty of girls who don't use birth control, and their guys use condoms instead (or don't use anything, which I think is playing with fire), who go for the average Joe. And from the amount of babies born from men who can't handle it and who obviously weren't about to try, I seriously can't do anything but laugh at the idea behind this study.

I went on the pill about 2 and a half years ago while dating my ex.  I dumped him a few months later.  He was not a "desirable mate" so I think that if the pill had anything to do with it, it helped!  My next boyfriend was a good guy but it didn't work out.  The guy after that... not such a good guy.  I think this study needs some more consistency before it makes claims.

  • Shopgirl0393@xanga

    Ha, this explains A LOT!!!

(jk--I don't feel it has much merit, if any)

  • AllMyNamesAreTaken@xanga

Haha. I'm happy on the pill. But I also don't care about dating or marriage and don't plan to have kids, either. So it works for me.

  • ThaBlackJade@xanga

No, but there are many other items that would stray me away from birth control. (weight gain, instant abortion, etc.)

  • Swinging_Through_Life@xanga

I find this funny, because my current boyfriend's ex left him a few months after she got on the pill.  He's a successful business owner, and she left him for a pothead!

I'd like to think that I'm too strong-headed to let a pill alter my attraction to my boyfriend.

  • I_am_Sango@xanga

@ThaBlackJade@xanga - I think you are ill-informed about how birth control works. It's not an "instant abortion" method. Birth control pills put hormones into your body to trick your body into thinking that it is pregnant, so you won't get pregnant.

You can't become impregnated when you're already pregnant. When on birth control, your body thinks you're already pregnant, and this is why you can't become pregnant "again." It's kind of confusing to explain, sorry.

  • DistantStarlight@xanga

Haha. I was never attracted to the "macho-male" type that women off the pill are supposedly attracted to according to various articles on this. I've heard the type of guy a woman on birth control is more laid-back and more of a "family man" type, which is what I always looked for anyway. When I started birth control I was already engaged to be married to the guy I had chosen when I was not on it. My desire for him did not wane a bit. Studies like this are interesting but I think several longitudinal studies are needed to really get a good picture of what the effects are in real life over time and not just in a lab sniffing T-shirts or speed dating.

  • Pastor_AndyG@xanga

@I_am_Sango@xanga - really?  I heard that the pill makes everything down there in a woman all pasty-like, which somehow effects the ovolation, like the egg isn't able to plant itself in the walls or something. Either way, interesting.

  • ThaBlackJade@xanga

@I_am_Sango@xanga -  But, if your body "thinks" that it is pregnant, it will remove any fertilized egg from the area that was fertilized later. I guess that would not be considered an abortion to some. I guess I did not make that clear enough.

  • I_am_Sango@xanga

@ThaBlackJade@xanga - No. That egg cannot get fertilized in the first place, because your body thinks it's already pregnant. Maybe you're thinking of the morning after pill. Plan B is more like an abortion. I'm just talking about the regular birth control pill that you take daily.

  • ThaBlackJade@xanga

@I_am_Sango@xanga - But, you must admit that there are times where you are still releasing eggs. Yes or no. If not, then there is no shot of polyfertilization. One egg is not always released. Plan B is actually like many daily birth control pills into its own pill. Once the sperm hits the egg, it is fertilized and needs to be implanted. If the body believes that it is "already pregnant" there will be no fertilization. The egg will just be expelled out through the body. Some people believe that to be a form of abortion. Some do not believe this is such. Yes, you are correct about Plan B but this is more of a rarer case.
