  • Why Does Everyone Have A Problem With Fiber?!

    I don't get it.

People claim that fiber has given them diarhhea or that it makes them have bowel movements, but isn't that a good thing anyway?

LOVE my FiberPlus bars. They've got fiber so I feel healthy, and they're also covered in chocolate and almonds, too! However, nobody else I know eats them because of the fiber. And my moms boyfriend calls them "laxatives in disguise."

Are they really that bad? I haven't even noticed anything different eating them. Either way, having more bowel movements make me feel healthier.

Can you have "too much" fiber? Do you get enough fiber in your diet?

i try to always get fiber. if i don't "go" at least once a day, i just feel off.

  • JoeytheGenie@xanga

I have an intake of 20-25g of fiber a day
the only thing is I can't have a huge shot of fiber before I run - makes me run straight home and to the bathroom
The day before a race I will not have my high fiber rice for dinner nor will I eat whole wheat whole grain bread for breakfast on race day - playing safe to avoid potential slow downs.

Fiber is the best. Having relief and a healthy digestive system free of clogs caused by all the crap we eat is WAY better than being bloated, stuffed up, and constipated. The average healthy person has at least one movement a day. It's better to have more than less bowel movements - I don't know what people take issue with. Would they prefer to have a clog up their butt?

I used to be really gung-ho about fiber, like oatmeal every morning and granola bars as snacks, but I've recently fallen out of pattern due to time constraints and a wonky school schedule, but I just wish I could get back on track!

    Fiber = Love

I have so much fiber a day haha
  • d0llh0use@xanga

i love fiber but not fiber bars (too sweet and sticky). i get my fiber the natural way from fruits and food.

  • TornadoChaser@momaroo

The reason why there is fiber added to everything is because the average person does not eat enough plant foods. If more people just ate their dang veggies you wouldn't need to supplement your diet at all.

That said, being vegan I get plenty of fiber.

It's because fiber bars have fake fiber in them. The artificial fiber can constipate some people, make them have diarrhea or just make them sick in general. I get 30-35 grams of fiber and sometimes up to 45, depending. Too much fiber would be over 40 grams. Usually you need to have a lot of water too, or that will cause constipation.

some people really don't need fiber, some people really do need fiber. it just depends on the person. fiber does keep you regular though, but eating just fiberplus bars and sprinkling fiberone in your soup isn't the best way to get your recommended fiber intake. Salads and many vegetables are more natural ways to get you to "go".

I make sure to eat plenty of green leafy foods, and try to eat as much fruit as I can afford. It seems to be working for me.

  • iiinfinitesimal@xanga

i've had fiberone bars and yogurt and i don't have any adverse effects. however, i'm also not overdosing on these kinds of fiber sources

  • chow@ireallylikefood

Wait what?  I love my fiber.  BM is a very good thing.  o.O ?

People don't realize how much toxic crap (no pun intended) builds up over time.

  • FallingSafely@xanga

some people have very sensitive stomachs to fiber... especially like IBS issues... it really just depends... I can't have a lot of fiber. But I do need a normal amount or else I'm screwed the other way. I just have to be careful I dont get too much or else it will take a laxative effect... and I will spend all day at home sitting on the toilet. I mean a couple more grams wont kill me. But you know I probably shouldn't be eating high fiber bars, when I can get fiber from raisin bran or something.

  • frozencherries@xanga

The thing is, if your body isn't used to much fiber, it will work as a laxative. You have to gradually introduce more of it into your diet if you don't want diarrhea. If your body is used to getting lots of fiber, this most likely wont happen. :]

  • gottobereal64@xanga

The fiber that is added unnaturally to those "Fiber One" or "Fiber Plus"  products has been known to cause problems in a lot people. (chicory root fiber)  I prefer to eat lots of fruits and veggies and whole grains instead of snacking on these.

  • nothng_less@xanga

I LOVE FIBER! I can consume anywhere from 20-40 grams of fiber (or more) easily. I eat Fiber One bars, Fiber Plus bars, All bran crackers, All bran cereal, and even my tortillas are high in fiber (11 grams per tortilla). I'm kind of a fiber freak. It helps me feel full, so why wouldn't I want it?

  • tracezilla@lovelyish

Too much fiber makes me sick. It makes my mother sick, as well. Other people I know have gotten constipated from it. Go figure.

However, it depends upon the person, as well. Some people really don't get any bad effects from fiber. It just depends. :p

  • nerdishh8D@xanga

I love the fiber ones bars, but I never eat them anymore. They just make me so bloated and gassy, it's disgusting. /:

  • evyluvsu@xanga

fiber is really really good for you and it makes you feel great. But always get it in the right proportions.

Fruit is good for you. Do you have a pound of it a day??? its the same =]

  • kaos_calle@xanga

i LOVE fiber. love it. it;s crucial to proper food resorption and there r 2 kinds of fiber: water soluble and insoluble. the soluble ones form a thick gel-like substance which moves through ur system slowly and makes u feel full longer, whereas insoluble fiber runs through u and cleans u up. u gotta have enough of both of these to stay healthy and ward colon cancer off.
so whoever hates fiber obviously doesn;t have their biochemistry and physiognomy facts right.

  • panda_cupcake@xanga

I struggle with liking fiber filled foods... i resort to fiber supplements to make sure i get enough fiber.

  • UnopenedSuitcases@xanga

i need more fiber in my body :[ maybe i should try this!

  • Pickwick12@xanga

I like fiber. It doesn't like me. As a Crohn's patient, it is too rough on my ripped up intestines, and it can promote the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines. If you're healthy, fiber in moderation is great. If you have inflammatory bowel disease like I do, it's not really your friend.

  • Yukihimekumiko@xanga

Oooh. Fiber, this is a good idea. Maybe i should pick up some fiber bars. XD

  • sexliesandcoffee@xanga

It's only bad when you've never had a fiber bar, so the first time you like, have to go a lot. It was like that for me when I first had a Fiber Plus bar, but now, I love them!
