A Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe!
One of my favorite drinks when the weather gets cold is hot chocolate. Since I'm not a huge coffee drinker, I resort to hot chocolate to warm me up AND to give me a sugar boost.
However, a pack of hot chocolate from a box can cost you up to 200 calories! Just for one packet of hot chocolate!
So, in desperation to find a healthy, body-warming recipe, I came across this healthy-version of hot chocolate. While it's not made with fruits and vegetables, it's safe to say that this recipe (courtesy of www.healthycooking.suite101.com) is definitely a healthier substitute for any pre-packaged version.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of soy, skim or rice milk
- 2 rounded teaspoons of 70% dark chocolate cocoa powder (the higher the percentage, the more bitter - but healthier - it will be)
- 2 teaspoons of organic sugar or sugar substitute1. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until steaming (but not boiling).
2. Add cocoa powder and sweetener and whisk to combine ingredients.
3. Whisk the cocoa powder and sweetener until well-blended.
4. Pour into favorite mugs and enjoy!If you feel like this recipe is too bland and you're looking for a bit more flavor, try adding in some nutmeg or cinnamon. Also, instead of using a flavored-syrup, try adding some mint leaves (or candy cane!) or vanilla extract for an extra boost of flavor.
If you find yourself continuing to buy the boxed version or if you're grabbing a hot cocoa from a coffee shop, make sure to skip the whipped cream and marshmallows in order to save yourself some sugar and calories.
Do you wish there were healthier recipes for other favorite holiday drinks? Would you try these healthier recipes?

These days I don't have a problem finding healthy recipes for pretty much just about anything I'm craving. That is, presuming that the main ingredient isn't something like alcohol which you can't really substitute
I drink low calorie packets of hot chocolate (because most nights I'm too lazy to do it by scratch) and pair it with 100 cal no butter popcorn bags. Either that or some tea
Yay! I love hot cocoa and drink it once a day in the colder months.. I can't resist. :)
sounds nice!
why dont you just add chocolate syrup to warmed up hot skim milk?????
I like adding a little chili powder to it... Yum.
@ironic_vertigo@xanga - hmm, i think that'd be weird because hot stuff goes more with salty items, not sweet items.
yumm!
@snapeful@xanga - You can actually buy spicy bar chocolate in grocery stores. Try it out sometime, I thought it would be gross too, but it's actually quite scrumptious. And addicting!
I have actually tasted the real authentic "hot chocolate" when I was in grade school on a international day. The teacher that prepared it said this is how hot chocolate should taste. Bitter.
@ironic_vertigo@xanga - Reallyyyyyyyy O_O Lol.
I'm going to see if I can make some of that now :P I've been wanting hot chocolate all week for some reason.
I sweeten mine with prunes or dates, put all in the blender, whizz...let it sit five minutes (fruits soften) whizz again, then pour into cups/mugs and nuke it till hot. I add vanilla, or cinnamon or chile pepper also, a tiny pinch of salt, and usually use half water, half lowfat milk.
It's terrific....
it's really easy to buy low cal hot choc from the packages for all of us lazy ppl...the ones i buy are only 45 cals per pack!
Yay! Finaly a hot cocoa recipe I won't feel guilty drinking every now and again. :] Thanks!
@shes_lump@xanga - I do that!! (I still like Swiss Miss tho! =P)
boxed hot chocolate mixes are gross. like a bajillion ingredients for something so so simple
sounds good :3
chocolate + healthy = perfect :)
@Peridot21@xanga - I could not have said it any better~!!
Sounds good!
I've done this before! It's really good. The only thing is that you need to add a bit of vanilla extract and the slightest pinch of salt to make it taste good.
Hi! I was on the lookout for a healthier hot chocolate when I found this page. I just made the drink and am enjoying it right now. (I added nutmeg and cinnamon to mine, but I overdid it with the nutmeg) To my surprise I actually like it! Thank you for posting this. I'll be keeping a watch for more healthier alternatives to old favorites.
I like it! I like it a lot.
