  • This is Why I'd NEVER Get a Flu Shot

This isn't meant to read like a propaganda post; I'm not trying to take sides on the healthcare argument or start a heated argument on a political debate.

However, this post is meant to show people the other side of what could happen to you if have a flu shot. This post is supposed to show you how it feels to be the "one-in-a-million" who experiences the side effects of a flu shot. More importantly, I want everyone to know how important it is to actually consider the side effects of all these shots that we take, when we really are expecting it to benefit our health.

Above is a video of a woman who, unfortunately, became that "one-in-a-million" case when she decided to get her annual flu shot. The following may be disturbing to some, but will certainly make all who watch it rethink their own decision on whether to get the shot.

When I first saw this video, I immediately felt my heartstrings being pulled at. I thought, "How devastating it must be for this woman to have to re-learn her life all because she thought she was taking preventitive measures to better her health!" But then, my thought process quickly shifted to, "What if that was me? Or someone I knew?"

Now I've never been an advocate for shots - I've been known to avoid shots at all costs. It's not that I'm afraid of needles or afraid of the pain, but rather I don't believe in injecting my body with a sickness to help prevent it later on in life. Especially, I don't believe in jeopardizing my health for no reason when there is no guarantee that I would get said sickness to begin with. However, many people will disagree with me - and rightfully so.

In my opinion, I'd rather be sick with the flu - the swine flu, regular flu, or any strain of it that the future may bring - than to be forced to live with the condition that this woman is facing right now. Although I realize that the doctors have said that these types of side effects are extremely rare and unlikely, this woman proves that they are very serious and realistic side effects, no matter how unlikely they may be.

What do you think? After hearing this story, are you reconsidering getting a flu shot? Do you think the benefits outweigh the risks?

that's sad, saw it on the news a while ago.

guess i lucked out, the Safeway i tried getting a shot from said my medical care wasn't covered at their store.

    still, very sad

  • soyeahthatswhathappened@xanga

wow, that's very disturbing....i can't imagine being that woman =/ i've never been vaccinated for anything other than what's required for attending public school, but after this i certainly won't be getting a shot for swine flu.

  • tigerdauphin@xanga

    Oh my goodness.

I myself have never got the shot before.  Neither has my family.  However w/ all the crap that they have been told on TV about H1N1 they are freaking out.  I try to explain that the regular flu is more dangerous to them than the Swine flu but it doesn't seem to sink in.

I've always been good with taking care of myself each winter.  I'll continue to do so this year.

  • Lil_Firefly_25@xanga

I refuse to get the shot; my dad got the shot years ago and he had never been more sick in his life.

  • katrinaxx@xanga

I totally agree with you.  While most people would definitely be better off taking the flu shot, everyone should be aware that there are real individuals behind one-in-a-million statistics.  Personally, I prefer the potential of spending a couple weeks or month feeling sick to years/a lifetime of physical (or mental!) disability...but that's just me :)

  • salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga

I haven't gotten either shot yet because I'm afraid of needles, but I'm planning to as soon as can. I don't care if I'm one of those one-in-a-million people. I'd rather take my chances than die from a damn flu. That would be a boring way to go out.

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

you're not injecting your body with a "sickness." most inoculations just contain antigens of common viral strains. the point is for your body to make antibodies in response to them so that, in the event you come across a viable pathogen, your immune system can respond more efficiently. the risk of a "live" virus is minute enough to me.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (an incurable neurological disorder) was reported in several hundreds of swine flu vaccine recipients in the 1976 outbreak.

Here's one article about it from the New York Times.

Whether or not the vaccine itself caused all the GBS cases is uncertain, though.

  • aznspartan94@xanga

    Holy crap that is scary.

  • whitetrashpoet@xanga

That's a compelling story, but a young girl in my hometown is at the hospital with H1N1, in an induced coma, needing to undergo heart and lung surgery - but they don't know if they can do the surgery without killing her. And of course if they don't do it, she will also die.

    Both cases are extremes.
Will most people need to worry about either extreme?
    No.
But as it stands based on current medical knowledge, you technically have greater chances of complications from swine flu than of complications from the vaccine.

    Oh well. Your choice.

  • x1babycake@xanga

Yes, you could be one of those one in a million people who will get these kind of side effects. If you watch the video, they say that the flu shot TRIGGERED it, which meant she was already carrying this disease in her body. These kind of videos are really trying to scare people away, when in reality, these shots do save people. It all depends on your medical history.

This video was shown to me before, and the whole class started laughing because they thought it was an act.. But of course Dystonia is real.

  • Seen_More_Spine_in_Jellyfish@xanga

I've never been the type to go out immediately and get a flu shot. It seems to me that people somehow always end up getting the flu sometime after they've taken the shot, i've never had the flu. I think its funny how ppl are rushing for the swine flu vaccine, it just came out, and ppl wanna inject themselves with it, they probably dont even know nor care whats in it.

  • Strangebrain@xanga

According to Dr. Leigh Vinocur, Doctor William Weiner --head of Neurology at the University of Maryland Medical Center--has come out and said, and has conferred with other Neurologists from John Hopkins, that the case being shown here is a psychogenic form of dystonia.  It's very sad because it's beyond her control, but it is in her head.  I feel for this girl, I really do, but this is simply something that could not have come from a vaccine.

  • x_Butterflies_and_Hurricanes_x@xanga

@x1babycake@xanga - agreed.  Surprisingly, I think a lot of us carry strange diseases and we never know what's going to trigger it.  I've found out that I have a very rare disease that the only thing I can relate to it's trigger is simply stress.  In fact, stress is one of the biggest triggers to all autoimmune or neurological disorders.

Ahhhhhh! I don't know what to do. I have a son who is one year old. I read a story on MSN about a 4 year old who suffered complications from the swine flu. She got pneumonia and ended up needing lung surgery to save her life! I've also read that babies are at higher risk for getting complications from the swine flu. At first, I'm thinking, "OMG, I'll never forgive myself if I don't get the shot and my baby gets complications,". But now I see this video and it's, "OMG, I'll never forgive myself if I get the shot and my baby gets paralyzed." What is a mother supposed to do?

  • katberg@xanga

Uhhh... I'll stick to vitamins and washing my hands, thanks!

My deepest sympathies go out to her and her family. :( I hope a cure for this condition will be developed soon.

  • cherrypopstar@xanga

the swine flu shot contains a weakened version of the virus. which means, the VIRUS triggered her immune response and disorder. if she got the real swine flu, the same thing would have happened if not worse.

if you got the injection, (dead version), then the vaccine caused nothing. she claims that the flu vaccine caused her to get the swine flu which in turn caused her dystonia. if she got the dead version, then it's really impossible to get the swine flu. the virus is dead. in her interview, she does say that she got sick. which means that SOMETHING else infected her. this is probably a somatic disorder. poor girl. T.T i hope she find relief.

  • scrambledmegsntoast@xanga

I heard some people died in an airplane crash. I suppose we shouldn't fly anymore either.

  • scrambledmegsntoast@xanga

@RoAngie467@momaroo - A mother is supposed to follow the educated advice of a doctor, not what is found on the internet, 99.9% of which is hysterical ridiculousness.

  • BunnyParfait@xanga

I love how they attempted to add more value to her life by saying how pretty she is. It doesn't really matter what the person looks like if that happens to them, it's still serious.

But she's also a very and I mean extremely rare case. I never get flu shots anyway but... eh.

  • whitetrashpoet@xanga

I am glad this post was edited. Still don't fully agree, but it sounds less like propaganda and fear-mongering. And again I point out - more people will have serious complications from swine flu than from the swine flu vaccine.

    @scrambledmegsntoast@xanga - Excellent point.

  • BunnyParfait@xanga

@Seen_More_Spine_in_Jellyfish@xanga - The reason why people get a flu after the shot is because they inject a different strain of the flu into your body to 1. kill the flu they're trying to prevent, and 2. condition your body to that strain so that you can fight against it.

  • BunnyParfait@xanga

@Strangebrain@xanga - Yes I heard about that as well. She'd have to go through psychoanalytic treatment I suppose? I wondered if it was psychosemantic when they said she could run and speak at the same time and she was fine.

  • xplodinglastbullet@xanga

Well, it's a choice and I simply choose not to get said vaccine because I do not want to redistribute the virus for several weeks after it has been given to me. :D

  • MsKittyCatty@xanga

I never get one either! I can't stand the thought of them actually injecting me with the virus to keep me from getting it. It's icky. Plus I hate needles. My husband gets one every year though. I told him about this too though
