Calorie Burning Drinks....Do They Really Work??
I recently saw an eye catching ad in one of the health magazines (I have to admit I am easily manipulated by ads for health products, even though I know a lot of them tend to ‘exaggerate’). The ad that caught my attention was for a calorie burning drink. Of course, this is not the first time I’ve seen an ad for a calorie burning drink, but I’ve never heard of or seen this drink before (I’m assuming it’s new?). It’s called Celsius. I don’t really know how many different kinds of calorie burning drinks are out there, but the only one I’ve tried so far is Enviga.
When I tried Enviga (green tea flavor) for the first time, it was surprisingly tasty. It only had 5 calories per can and according to the label, it contained green tea antioxidants and calcium, which are supposed to help you burn 60-100 additional calories per day. Unfortunately, you have to drink THREE CANS in order for that to happen (and of course you still can’t ditch your daily exercise). I haven’t tried Celsius yet; I’m guessing it’s basically the same idea, but with more flavors to choose from.
Anyway, maybe I didn’t drink enough Enviga or whatever the reason, but I honestly didn’t really see any benefit. And plus, THREE cans per DAY?! Then how much do you have to spend in the end to see the result? Why not just drink pure green tea?
Have you guys tried any kind calorie burning drinks before? Do you think they helped you lose weight?

I was about to point that out ... you have to drink 3 cans in order to burn [at most] 100 calories. even if you were to drink 9 and burn 300 calories a day, that's not going to make a significant dent if you eat 1600 calories a day.
what if you don't exercise? Does it not work? if you have to exercise in order for the drink to burn 100 calories, is it really worth it to drink them? it would be cheaper [and healthier] to just drink water and then go exercise.
you can lose more taking a walk around the block, and it's free
@goblinsinthemirror@xanga - Hah, yep. I was about to say the same thing as the last part.
I remember when those first came out in 2007, I was working at Walgreen's and we had to sell those. They are surprisingly pretty good. I wouldn't drink it to burn calories exactly, but if someone is sensitive to energy drinks like I am and hates the crash, then it's a good drink. Oh, and I also want to point out that with green tea you need to drink around 3-4 to burn the same amount - so it's not that its necessarily better, but the taste + added energy is what is so appealing about those drinks. Also, think about it.. 100 calories a day for someone that calorie counts is pretty significant. Think about it. If a person has maybe.. 9 cans of those in 7 days, that translates to 300 extra calories the person can choose to treat themselves or just lose. It really IS significant if someone is diligent about numbers, everything adds up.. I mean, some people only burn 200 calories per workout - that doesn't mean it's not affecting them.
Is it enough.. obviously not. Anyone that would drink those with the intention of losing weight is fooling themselves, but as an aid, it's not bad. I would prefer green tea bags long-term wise because of the price, obviously, but its still not bad.
That enviga drink made me hungrier. Not to mention it tasted exactly like strong-gassed water.
Didn't feel anything better than regular water. And didn't make me lose any pound.
Pure gimmicks.
i go for pure green tea. if it doesnt taste bitter u KNOW there';s sth wrong. it;s green tea for god's sake!
I hope you people are aware of the fact that you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose a pound right?... and green tea also boosts your metabolism.
Celsius works but drinking more than one within the same hour wont cause you to burn anymore calories, it's the gradual effect of your body's metabolism increasing, not the drink just burning calories like cardio.@LosingThroughAccuweight@xanga - Exactly. If they burn 300 calories a week, that's an extra 4.5 pounds you'd either lose or keep off in a year. That's pretty awesome.
@goblinsinthemirror@xanga - 300 calories a day is a lot! That's 109,200 calories you'd burn in a year. That's about 31.5 pounds lost. Even if you just drank 1 a day, that'd burn 12,121 calories a year. 3.5 pounds. That doesn't seem like a lot, but it's much better than RedBull. If you drank 1 RedBull a day you'd gain about 11.5 pounds in a year.
Been drinking Celsius for 2 years. Yes it works- and it only takes one can per day. It can nearly double your Calorie burn when consumed prior to exercising. Celsius has 5 independent clinical studies to back up it's claims. Enviga does not. With diet and exercise and Celsius, you "can" loose weight!
I've never tried Celsius nor Enviga. . . I've been there done that with RedBull / Sugar Free and Rockstar / Sugar Free. Don't care for either of them. After hearing that Kendra from The Girls Next Door was drinking an energy drink called RedLine I thought I would try it. And I'm by no means "skinny" nor "average" but after purchasing and buying the shots of RedLine (which they have recently been taken off the market after I only bought a case once) The bigger bottles are although still on the market, they have the same ingredients just diluted with water as well. These drinks get me through my workout. Without them, I'd probably be able to only workout for like 20 mins, depending on the exercise. . .But these drinks give me the boost that I normally would not have. Instead of giving up after 20 mins. . .I can keep going for at least double the time and most the time more, it really gets you to "keep going." It gets your heartrate up fast, I'll have to take a couple minute break some times while working out just to let my heart slow down some, then I'll be right back at working out again. Its good stuff when you need a push, like I do. There are 2 servings in EVERY bottle. Read the reviews on this product before buying though, some things are not for everyone. And I don't recommend anyone with a heart condition of ANY kind to buy this. But if you are healthy, then its worth a try for a preworkout energy drink.
You burn calories drinking ice water, because your body has to warm up the water. I calculated it once for science; something like 1 calories for every 1.5 ounces. =P
I hadn't heard of those drinks before. I wouldn't try them if they have artificial sweeteners, but otherwise maybe.
I've heard of Celsius. A friend said she tried it, but she's not from here and I haven't seen it anywhere here. Oh and someone mentioned RedLine! I LOVE IT! lol My favorite is the watermelon. It tastes like candy. I'm not very sensitive to energy drinks but these give me loads of energy. I usually drink them before a workout if I need an extra boost.
Might as well stick to the good ole, home-brewed, pure green tea. It may not come in enticing flavors such as peach or raspberry, but at least you'll know what you're putting into your body. Those canned stuff are most often filled with high fructose corn syrup and other artificial crap that may slow down your weight-loss rather than speed it up.
I've always found that the Bruce Lee Water DIet helps when trying to slim down...that and fasting from lunch for about 2 or 3 weeks (Lent thing...I prayed instead of ate lunch...consumed a different kind of food
).
I think the catch is always that you still need to workout. Plus, the high caffeine content often helps to speed up the heart rate, which burns calories a little quicker, too. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I tried enviga once, and had the shakes so bad I couldnt stop moving
I absolutely love Enviga. Most day's I'd rather have a can of Enviga than morning coffee. It's just nice to have a different choice for my caffeine fix.
It may have 5 calories or if the "burning" effect is true then it has -33 calories. Not a huge difference either way. As a weight loss tool I don't think that extra 100 calories for 3 cans will do much. According to their study (yes, I read those sort of things) more than 3 cans per day will not burn more than the 100 calories. So the only reason to drink more is for enjoyment.
Diet products like negative calorie drinks have a very small effect. Exercise is good for toning and having a healthy heart, but you can easily eat enough to undo the calories from exercise with just one "reward yourself" cheeseburger. All the exercise and diet products in the world won't make you lose weight if you don't reduce your calorie intake well below your calorie expenditure each day.
(I lost 135 pounds in 10 months in 2007)
