  • Has the Flu Invaded Your Life?

Has the Flu Invaded Your Life?

My baby and I have been sick for more than a month! I've been to the doctor twice for antibiotics, steriods, inhalers and other drugs to handle symptoms. I'm tired of it!

On September 17, my 11-year-old daughter aquired H1N1, so we set up our version of intensive care: turned the couch into a bed with a self-service tray of grapes and other finger food with the PS2 controls and books handy. Then, we pumped her full of liquids and keep track of her medications. Three days later, it found me, too. In actuality, H1N1 passed rather quickly, so we were back into regular routine within a week.

Then, the Bronchitis From Hell arrived.

It's not true pnuemonia, but it won't go away! We cough and hack and puke and feel like old garbage! Very, very slowly we are getting better, but for goodness' sake! It has been a month already!

I want to hear other first hand accounts of this flu to see if others have this annoying, but not life threatening difficulty.

    • Give general location, such as nearest major city and state (or country info, if not the U.S.).
    • How long were you sick?
    • How severe were symptoms?
    • What treatments did you use, such as chemical meds or natural treatments.
    • What worked?
    • What activities do you continue to do while sick?
    • Are you well yet?

We've tried several natural treatments in addition to the chemical ones, but my 11 year-old does not like them- so it's easier to give her a prescription pill. For myself, I prefer teas and soups from garlic, ginger, cayenne, peppermint, etc, when treating symptoms. Also, essential oils. Our results from the two methods have been the same: slow, slow, slow healing.

I'm still sick. I don't know what I have, but I can't stop coughing and my ribs are sore.

I had a fever, but it definitely wasn't H1N1 as far as I know. My dad brought home a cold, and in a week, I had it, then my mom had it. I signed into my university account where they have a prompt on every faculty and student's welcome page that asks if you have flu-like symptoms, by which you can sign in, and if you once signed in with symptoms and are now well, to sign out. I'm located in southern Ontario, Canada.

I stayed sickest longest, which was a week between the time I first felt a sore throat and the last day of having a sore throat. I had a bit of coughing, little runny nose, fever, and by the end of it, a bunch of phlegm. Not very severe, just a nuisance. They were "flu-like symptoms" enough for me to log in as ill. I drank apple cider vinegar, honey, half a lemon, and hot water, usually to 1:1:1:3 kind of portions. I don't really measure, I just throw it all in but make sure the vinegar quantity is equal to honey so it doesn't smell/taste like hot cat pee. ACV has such a strong smell but it works miracles. ;(

My mom got better really quickly, she says because when she was at work preparing a food order, hot white vinegar was steaming up into her face and clearing her system and I can really vouch for the health aspects of vinegar. She eventually boiled some vinegar and lemon and brought the pot into my room to whiff from every once in a while.

I do just about everything when I'm sick, haha. I went to work where my coworkers said my hot spots were either menopause (I'm 19 :P) or a fever but I kind of brushed it off because at that point, I was just feeling hot everywhere and a sore throat. I only signed in with symptoms at school so that I had a legitimate reason if I were to miss any assignments or tests by chance, though I rarely do. I wound up sleeping through one of my 8am classes, but that's all I missed from being sick.

I got this weird throat flu thing last year. It sucked, it didn't go away for like a month and a half. I was out of school and shit, bed-ridden from the horrid pain and inability to talk or eat anything without dying.
You have to wait that shit out, I took hella ibuprofen and Tylenol and shit for my throat pain. Meow.

I have something right now, but the echinacae, goldenseal, and zinc took care of the sore throat, so it's just a nasty cough.  I think I'm over the worst of it, though, and should be better in a few days.

I rarely get sick, but I had my wisdom teeth removed at the beginning of the week, which would have left me more susceptible.  Ironically, I probably caught whatever I have at the surgeon's office because of the exposure to other people and it fits with the timeline.

I had H1N1 a month ago. I had a fever of 103, my lymph nodes were swollen as hell, I had the worst cough, and I was so dizzy, I could barely walk. And when I tried to drive to school, I came straight back home to throw up...

    Yeah. Not fun.

@pinkdagger@xanga - Oh! I forgot vinegar! All I have left now are the asthma-like symptoms and a little rinanitis. Thanks so much for telling me about this.

I had the flu back in March and it took me out of work for a week. I went in fine, but within an hour I was sick to my stomach, couldn't stand up, double vision, coughing, sneezing and aching. I got my boyfriend to drive me home and felt like death walking. I couldn't eat and barely drink. I also went blind. I couldn't breath properly for months and still don't take deep breaths unless I have something to lean on. Overall worst flu experience ever. And I rarely get the flu. I just drank a lot of orange juice and apple juice(the only things I could keep down) and rest and heat. I hate taking pills, and nothing really helps anyway.

A 6 year old girl about an hour and a half from me died from the swine flu, and another person my boss and I know her son has it and is having serious hallucinations. Strap a person down type. They've closed two schools because 300 or more students were out with flu or like symptoms.

This flu is HORRIBLE! I caught it thinking it would be a 5-day deal, but it ended up lasting 3 weeks with one relapse. I am from the northern Colorado area, symptoms were fever, achiness, nausea, stuffy nose, bad cough, fatigue. I was getting better but then relapsed the second week with a fever that returned & severe cough. I went to the doctor the 3rd week & had a really high resting pulse (140) & low blood pressure (90/60) so they had to put me on IV fluids & gave me mucinex. I found that mucinex was really the only thing that helped, although it gave me a funny flavor in my mouth. Acetominophen helped with fever. Robitussin helped a little bit. I still had to work while sick, but I was out of school for a week. I am finally well.
