Coconut Milk Ice Cream, We're Going to be Good Friends
As my no-cow "diet" continues, I've been researching different foods I can eat that don't contain dairy or beef.
Thanks to my always attentive sister, she spotted an advertisement in our local grocery store's flyer for coconut milk ice cream. Me, being somewhat desperate for dairy-esque products, decided to check it out.
While there are multiple different kinds of coconut milk ice cream, I've only tried one - Turtle Mountain. Turtle Mountain "provides dairy-free indulgence" when it comes to ice creams. With a variety of eight flavors, there's a good selection to choose from to satisfy your craving.
I tried the Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl, and I definitely was not disappointed. While the consistency was a bit different, it wasn't different in a bad way. Instead of being grainy and thick like some normal ice creams can be, Turtle Mountain's ice cream was smooth and soft - a sort of (literal) melt-in-your-mouth texture.
While the Chocolate PB Swirl ice cream may be high in saturated fat, it's low in sodium and carbohydrates, and has a reasonable amount of calories (210 per serving) if you're looking for a little treat to snack on as an indulgence.
Here's a couple of facts about Turtle Mountain's coconut milk ice cream:
- Dairy and lactose free
- Sweetened with Agave
- Gluten free
- No soy proteins
- Cholesterol free
- Trans Fat free
- Certified for Vegans AND is certifiably made with organic ingredients!I totally recommend this ice cream for anyone who is allergic to gluten, or anyone who is lactose intolerant. It's delicious AND healthy!
Have you ever found products to replace foods that you can't eat? Would you ever try a coconut milk or dairy free ice cream?

This ice cream and I are going to be great friends soon, I think.
I love ice cream, but am lactose intolerant and have high cholesterol, so this seems like a godsend. The fat content is pretty extreme, but that's from the coconut, not some nasty way of processing, so I wouldn't feel guilty about indulging in a small bowl after dinner.
ohmy...i have to try this. i love coconut but im also lactose intolerant so ice-cream and i don't mix well (though i DO still eat it...and suck up the pain and anguish experienced post-icecream indulgence). im going to see if i can pick this up sometime tomorrow <3!
omg this looks good! =]
mm i love the cookie dough! I heard that the saturated fat from coconut is not bad for you, but could be wrong... oh and at the grocery store i go to they have "ice cream" made from hemp milk and that is delicious as well.
I LOVE Purely Decadent coconut milk ice cream! The chocolate and new Turtle Trails flavors are out of this world incredible. And yes, you are right, Lauren. The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut are reported to be very good for you!
I'm not vegan or lactose intolerant, but that stuff looks pretty amazing!
I love the coconut ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery, and the nutty coconut ice cream from Dunkin Donuts,so there's a good chance that I would like coconut milk ice cream. I don't like chocolate ice cream so are there any other flavors of coconut milk ice cream?
i loved tofutti cuties, they are little dairy free ice cream bars. I would definitely try coconut milk ice cream.
I replaced butter with Earth Balance, that stuff is magic, it fixes my buttered toast cravings right away.
mmmm sounds good. but coconut milk has a lot of fat........so it might be dairy free but be too over indulgent and youll be gaining the pounds reeeal fast.
@loulalauren@xanga - Im pretty sure all fats are the same no matter where it comes from....especially saturated fats...I dont think it makes it good if it comes from a "healthy" food. Thats a common misconception. fat is fat.

Not all fats are the same or for that matter bad, that is a common misconception. Our bodies need certain types of fats, particularly poly & monounsaturated & omega 3 & 6 which are very healthy for our hearts & give the skin a nice glow. Of course stick to the rule everything in moderation, but there is a diff. Coconut saturated fat is different than animal saturated fat because the fatty acid chains are shorter, & also healthier b/c they don't stick together & clog arteries as much. The lauric acid chain in coconut has antibacterial, antifungal & antiviral properties so coconut is one of the most wonderful foods. I know all this b/c I'm a nutrition major.now...is the chocolate fair trade??!
i'm a newbie vegan so i haven't tried much. thanks for the tip :]
wow. this sounds delicious.
That actually sounds amazing. I've been really missing ice cream because I haven't found a non-dairy one that I've liked.
I absolutely would. :) If I find a place in town that sells it, I would definitely try it. :)
I would try dairy free. Not coconut though. That's one of my least favorite flavors lol.
THIS STUFF IS SO GOOD! I would eat it every week if it was not so expensive. Yes, people, I have tasted this substance, and it is HEAVEN.
