I Can't Stand Ignorance on Weight Loss!
I'm all in support of people wanting to lose weight and using their own methods to do it.
I only have one problem when my friends start talking to me about weight loss: How uneducated they are!
Here are a few ignorant things about weight loss that I hear:
1. Unreasonable Weight Goals. People ask me how much I weigh and I don't mind telling them. People envy that I weigh in between 110-118 (usually around 112). The fact that I'm 5 feet tall is a huge factor in my weight. Naturally it's easier for me to weigh less than someone who is 5'6. In my opinion, the anorexic look is not attractive.
2. Targeting Certain Areas. It's almost impossible to lose weight in just one area. If you try to lose weight, you'll probably lose it all over and in places that you don't want to.
3. Developing an Eating Disorder. I know a few people that have claimed to want to develop anorexia or bulimia to control their ight. I pointed out the negatives and health reasons why they shouldn't and they told me they'd stop once they hit their target weight. It's not that simple. You can't just stop having an eating order, it's an addiction.
4. Anyone with an Eating Disorder is REALLY Skinny. Did you know that people who purge often are at a healthy weight? It is possible to have an eating disorder without physically looking like it.
I could go on, but really I'll leave it here.If you want to lose weight, go for it. Just try to realize the myths and truths and figure out if you really need to. I hate to see people killing themselves out of ignorance, especially those I actually care about.
Do you find that you're ignorant to the realities of weight loss? Do you sometimes believe in one of these four different statements?

I'm the same way you are. I've had a girl talk about eating 200 calories a day and I was disgusted. Another girl told me she was going to work out to lose weight. I told her "You're already so super thin" (and she REALLY was) "that working out will probably make you gain more, since muscle weighs more than fat." She was shocked and said "Well I can't work out then" All that mattered to her was the number on the scale, not being healthy. It gets annoying. I'm not healthy, but I know what being healthy is, unlike some of those people who look healthy, and aren't.
Ugh! I despise ignorance on weightloss!!!! I agree 100%
I myself is trying to loose weight. But I want to be healthy while doing it. I personally don't care what my looks are just as long as I am healthy while loosing the pounds or more like some inches.
I totally agree. This is coming from a girl who has had an eating disorder her whole life more prominantly for the past six years. Alot of the girls I meet on here are simply a few already lovely girls trying to lose 5 lbs before prom or who knows what! And its sick and disturbing because I see the truth about this, I know my life wont be perfect if Im ever as skinny as Im stuck on being, I know somethings wrong in my self image, and that this isnt a fad diet!
And I know a girl who is 5'11 and weighs..well quite a bit, shes obesse :/ But she wants to be 90 lbs. I tell her that Im pretty sure she would fall over and die somewhere around 110 lbs lol.
And also, thats why there isnt alot of help for bulimics, not as much as anorexics, because sometimes we have no visually physical side effects.
Humans are very visual :/
@MsKittyCatty@xanga - Yeah, I hate how people define themselves by numbers. Although, I'm slightly hypocritical, being a wrestler and identified by my weight. I think it should be about how you look rather than how heavy you are, muscle tone is healthier looking than bones.
@DeadXTendencies@xanga - Yeah, I think if people seriously want to take health risks they should realize them.
@crazie_girl09@xanga - That's an amazing perspective to have.
I just don't care. As long as I'm not 160 pounds like I used to be, I'm good. I just refrain from sitting on my ass all day and I actually go outside and do shit.
I could probably lose a few pounds, I'm 142 pounds and 4'11'', but I'm fine with my body and I'm not morbidly obese, so who cares?
I swear, girls kill themselves over it and it doesn't even really matter as long as you're not having health risks.
Yes, it's true that many people have a lot of unrealistic expectations about weight loss and many cannot accept that it takes hard work, dedication and healthy habits. Although being anorexic will make you skinny, it comes with far far more health risks.
"Whole Foods is healthy! So lets go eat all the stuff there!"
"Frozen Yogurt is healthy!"
"Veggie chips are healthy"
"Anything organic is healthy!"
"I need to detox and eat just juice today"
"I put lots of Olive Oil on Everything I eat"
"I eat sweet potato fries!"
"Id like to order the large Jamba juice"
"I workout and Im healthy!" --- and yet they go binge drinking and partying three times a week.
Im with you 100%.
Thank you so much on #4. I hate when people assume eating disorders only mean people get skinny. There are some people who overeat for various reasons & that's a disorder too. Have you ever watched the reality show "Ruby" on Style Network? She has a disorder with food & it made her morbidly obese but she lost weight with trainers, nutritionists, psychiatic help & good old fashion motivation. She's my idol in many ways for that. Not saying I hate people who lose weight with surgery but that should be a last resort thing & people tend to jump on that fast.
Oh & people annoy me with #2. "OMG My face is so skinny, I just wanted to lose my middle". you do lose weight everywhere, people dont get that.
#2.
I have muscular thighs, semi-muscular arms (b/c I haven't weight lifted for a month) & an over all average weight for my height (5'3-4, 104-108 - depending on whether or not I shoved everything into my mouth) but I still have a flabby stomach (I used to have a mini sex v though, during the height of my training). While I don't enoy it I do realize it's probably impossible for me to achieve a flat 6pack and I embrace it, I'm not going to not eat for a week but rather eat what I enjoy and just embrace life as it is.
LOL I'VE NEVER HEARD ANY OF THIS BEFORE.
THIS ENTRY IS SO UNIQUE AND IN NO WAY COMPLETELY RESTATING ALMOST EVERY ENTRY SO FAR ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS.
hey health kicker, let me know when you have something worthwhile and innovative to talk about.
I've never subscribed to this line of thinking. :p It just doesn't make sense. And I would probably stare at someone blankly if they told me they wanted to become anorexic or bulimic just to get to their target weight and then stop.
And even if that were possible, how would they maintain the weight? That's why even most regular fad diets and even diet plans do not work, is because you do it until you get where you want to be (if they work in the first place) and then you stop and you gain all the weight back. :p
Unfortunately, there is no short cut with being healthy. :p You just have to do it right or you are risking your health in one way or another.
I'm 85 lb at 5 ft, and well I don't have a eating disorder. I control what I eat and cut off the sugars when needed (mothers a diabetic, I know better) I work off whats needed in my own way (running and yoga) This method doesnt work for everyone. Because quite frankly, people have told me I'm very strict with myself (only because I avoid high fatty foods - stomach doesnt seem to like it.)
I find that most people pick dieting plans, but never stick to them. But that isn't the biggest issue. The big issue is when they slip up, and how they try to make up for it.
I'm confused as to whether you are saying that these are things that people say and believe, or if the bold phrases are the myths and you are disputing them with the un-bold text.
At any rate, "In my opinion, the anorexic look is not attractive."
Of course the anorexic look is not attractive, it's a disease.
You wouldn't say "In my opinion, the cancer look is not attractive."
Not to be defensive or anything, I'd just prefer people would stop using "anorexic" as a synonym for thin. :/
I agree, I think some people do go way to far. But it should be common sense to eat less fattening foods it you want to lose weight, and exercise and not be a glutton. People are crazy.
I hate people who are simply idiotic about dieting. I work in a restaurant, so I hear a lot of bogus statements, like "Oh I'll have the caesar salad, that'll be healthy for me!" Oh please -caesar dressing has more fat than any of the others! Or dieting women who can't give up dessert. If you can't give up dessert, then you probably won't be giving up the thighs either. Sorry to break it to ya.
And in response to anorexia being a disease...
Umm, I'm pretty sure anorexics made the choice to not eat food. And although some cancer patients did it to themselves, many did not. They didn't choose to have a disease. It's like calling drug addiction a disease. Give me a break. People have will power, you know.
@Muffinator@xanga - That is something that has always bugged me!
A mental disorder is not a disease! Anorexia is a mental thing, an addiction. Cancer is a disease. Comparing the two is a major disrespect to people that are suffering from true diseases everywhere!
I am an advocate of healthy lifestyle and I definitely do not believe on the 4 statements. Some will loss weight due to any 4 of the above but their body weight will not be consistence. It will be more like a yo yo (up and down) I believe people who make those statements are just looking for a quick fix.
@tigerdauphin@xanga - I so agree. A lifestyle choice a person makes cannot later be labeled a disease when, SURPRISE, they're suffering!
I would just like to add a few things to this conversation.
1) According to the NIMH Eating Disorders are a mental illness. Not a choice or even an addiction. It's advisable to see professional help and treatment if you think you may have an eating disorder.
2) "Choosing" anorexia or bulimia to shed a few pounds is extremely dangerous.
3) If you want more information for yourself or a loved one, the National Eating Disorder Association has a toll-free, confidential helpline. 1-800-931-2237. Please seek professional help.

I get annoyed when super skinny girls say they need to lose weight. I mean, seriously. I think a healthy weight is attractive, not toothpick skinny. I also get annoyed by the opposite... I serve at a Cracker Barrel and half of the people who eat there are morbidly obese (I don't eat their food much. I just serve it). We have a low-carb section and people order off of it thinking they are being healthy when most of the items on there are very greasy and fattening. Then they ask for biscuits and corn bread (which are definitely NOT low carb or even close to healthy). When did low-carb become synonymous with healthy?
You are so right in saying that there so many weight loss myths and unhealthy/unrealistic ways to achieving this loss of weight. I am personally more interested in weight management and more importantly- health! Our family really works hard to make sure that what foods we buy do not contain artificial junk and are not processed. We try to drink lots of water and take our vitamins every day. Another thing that is healthy that I take is my Vidazorb probiotic. I have read that probiotics can help with not only digestion, but weight! So - I am all about healthy weight...not anything that can cause damage!
People who are overweight can also have eating disorders. Just because someone is overweight doesn't mean that they aren't suffering from binge eating disorder or even bulimia or anorexia. There are hundreds of examples of girls who develop eating disorders when they are overweight and gradually lose the weight. You can't tell someone's health issues just by looking at them.
