Can Someone Explain Why Weed is Bad?

I have smoked pot for two years - since I was 14. Weed provides, for me, relief.

I suffer from extreme nausea I experience from my HIV treatment. It also helps with my PTSD from the death of my mom (to AIDS) and my depression. I smoke about four times a day - once before school, once during my lunch break, once after school and once in the late afternoon.

Marijuana means, for me, that I don't have to worry about nausea, or my depression. Marijuana means that I can feel happy, relaxed and have a good time with my life.

I'm not a typical "stoner." I'm not stupid. In fact, many people consider me intelligent. I'm strong and I'm (fairly) healthy.

But, I would like to know how weed is effecting me. And you can tell me all you want - that it's killing brains cells and that I'll be mentally retarded by the time I'm "older," but according to my adolescent medicine doctor, I'm as healthy as I've ever been (since contracting HIV)... and yes, that includes my brain.

So, can anyone explain to me why weed is bad, besides the fact that it's illegal? If it's making me feel happy and healthy (and my brain looks fine) then why should I stop?

The only thing is that the smoke might affect your lungs in some way. Other than that, I don't really see a problem. I don't smoke, but I don't care if others do.

  • aleigh01@xanga

it's not bad...it's less addicting than alcohol, cigs, and food and it doesn't hurt your lungs because it's a natural plant from the ground...the government just sucks...it was legal for so many years and then i believe it was president reagan who screwed us over.

could someone explain to me why this question is even being asked?

  • Pcgecko85@xanga

There is no real reason.  It should be legalized and taxed properly.

only lung stuff but its not bad... better tan crack.

If you can function then thats fine.  Go about your life.  But I can say I have seen my own father hit his children, go into rages, loose his home, and even take food out of his grandson's mouth because he didn't have any weed.  And yes weed.  Some people can smoke pot and be normal human beings, some like my dad can't.  He is in serious debt, has been evicted from his crappy trailer park homes many times, and has pushed all his children away, because he can't live without being high.  He has mass amounts of debt, and when pay day comes before he feeds his child and grandchild, (my sister and nephew) or even pays his bills he has to see his dealer and get what he needs for the week.  Then he pays his bills, and then he buys groceries.  Just be careful.

I just don't like drugs at all. I have a feeling it will eventually be legal though...

I don't know about how good/bad weed is (I personally have no problem with it). I think it's great that it helps you with your medication. However, it sounds like you use it to help you deal with some emotional problems, which may become a problem further down the line. If you turn to weed to help your depression, then you're not really learning how to face your depression or your PTSD on your own. It's hard to deal with such traumatic experiences, but learning how to overcome our adversities is an important part of life. This aspect of the post reminds me of the recent post about being "semi-alcoholic". I'll say to you what I said to them: using a substance to help with an emotional issue is called a DEPENDENCY. And a dependency, by definition, can lead to an addiction. Even for things like weed, that aren't supposed to be addictive. My sister uses cigarettes to help her deal with stress. I use food to help me deal with loneliness. And you use weed to help with depression. Dependencies take many forms, and they all have different physical effects on the body. But the worst part is that you (we) may never learn the life skills needed to deal with emotionally difficult situations.

I know that's not what you asked, but I thought it was important. Best of luck.

I have a friend that's 19 that has already ruined his life over weed. :| he was a normal guy that was involved in sports like track and stuff. & he's in rehab right now, and the funny thing is that, since he has depression, the doctor is giving him a medical card so that he can get more weed when the whole thing started because of it. =\

Weed is not any worse than any other substance that people abuse, it's simply because it is illegal that it is made such a big deal of when it causes problems. It is not chemically addictive, can have health benefits, and is less damaging toward your lungs than cigarettes. I have a friend with Chron's Disease who was eligible for medical marijuana and it has improved his life immensely. As for it's association with drug cartels in Latin America, if the government would legalize it, the country would not only see profitability from it's taxation, but would see a reduction in drug-related crime.

Also, if anyone wants to pursue the benefits of legalization, or just marijuana further, read reefer madness.

It's not horrible for you, there are "side effects" like slight memory loss. But it doesn't 'cause you to forget so bad that you have to put a piece of tape on the bathroom floor so you know where to stand when you pee. Just makes you forget to hit the start button on the microwave once you've but your munchies in it.
Most (NOT ALL) people that have serious issues with it have never smoked it so they usually don't know what they're talking about.

  • LouLouLouie@xanga

Prolonged use has been linked to psychological problems like depression and schizophrenia.
However, many of the studies done on marijuana use is conducted by anti-drug comissions, so a bias may be present.
If you can smoke up that much and keep a firm grasp on your life, more power to you.

it causes infertfility, lung problems, weight gain, inability to concentrate... There's a bunch of other stuff.

  • SaClaudy@xanga

@Lil_Firefly_25@xanga - Bullshit!! you just DON'T develop schizophrenia from smoking weed. that is something you have in your genes to begin with.

  • iusemycerebellum@xanga

@SaClaudy@xanga - actually weed does cause it. schizophrenia is caused by an excess of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain, which is what weed does.

  • unluckyclover84@xanga

i have smoked for 10 years... i am not crazy, stupid or lazy. There is nothing wrong with it as long as you dont let it control your life. i do agree however with some one elses comment about forgetting to hit start on the microwave when your munchies are in it..  yes, this happens just like putting the milk in the cabinet instead of the fridge... but when you really think about it, everyone does it. it happens when you are distracted.

  • be__quiet@xanga
It isn't bad in my opinion. If it keeps you happy and feeling better, then you shouldn't stop!  It's not the best thing you can do for your lungs (but it is surely not as harmful as the man-made, chemically-altered, and poison-induced tobacco substance, which is very legal............................................), and it can tend to demotivate you from schoolwork and such, but the simple solution for that is to just get it done before smoking.  I've heard that over time it can cause minor memory loss... but what older person doesn't have a case of that already?Too many people just have a strong bias against weed, and they haven't even experienced it. This entire country could benefit in more than one way from the legalization of weed. You seem like an intelligent human being, and if smoking marijuana that much for two full years hasn't had any negative effects on your mentality or your body, then fuck it. Do what makes you happy.  Weed has never killed anyone.
  • cantblinktilligo@xanga

I think it's pathetic and morally wrong. The physical effects can be found anywhere on the internet, so plus that I think you can understand why it's bad.

Smoking pot or something else... an addiction is never good. Eventually you start fooling yourself, ''it's not that bad'' or ''you can quit it but you just don't want to''... It makes you weak and starts to control you.

  • morbidcoronerchick@xanga

You WILL be mentally retarded or have some other type of mental issue if you keep smoking this shit. My ex Pete is a pothead------I mean, almost every day he smokes the shit! He's smart, but slow. Like, he won't realize if something is right in front of him (e.g., recently we hung at a coffee shop near his place and there was a fat, old man in the corner, playing accordion. Pete turned to me and said, "Where's that music coming from?" I said, "Look behind me" and, bam, he said, "Oh! Duh! The accordion guy!") or it will take him a while to get the grasp of things. He's also very forgetful------he says it's because his dad is forgetful, but I also know it has to do with the weed, since it kills brain cells. Anyway, need I continue? Yeah, you need to leave the shit alone. Find something else that can help get rid of your pain------something prescribed by a SANE, certified doctor------and is LEGAL, buddy.

    @cantblinktilligo@xanga - *high five* AMEN!

  • AutumnShadowsQ@xanga

Weed is "affecting" you, not "effecting."

  • blackspiders@xanga

    @morbidcoronerchick@xanga -

    Are you kidding me?

It amazes me how people are so fast to condemn something they actually know nothing about!

    Read this.

Maybe you, in particular, should carefully read the part where it says, "The claim that marijuana kills brain cells is based on a speculative
report dating back a quarter of a century that has never been supported
    by any scientific study."
