Congratulations to the NYC Marathon Winners!

Congratulations to Meb Keflizghi, who is the winner for the men's race in ING's New York City Marathon! With a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 15 seconds, Keflizghi has become the first American men's winner since 1982!

Another congratulations goes out to Derartu Tulu, from Ethiopia, won the women's race with a time of 2 hours, 28 minutes and 52 seconds!

Participants in the NYC Marathon face a challenging course including five bridges (the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Pulaski Bridge, Queensboro Bridge, Willis Avenue Bridge and the Madison Avenue Bridge), multiple steep inclines (including one that lasts almost one mile) and declines and several different running surfaces (bridges, parks, concrete and stone).

As if that wasn't hard enough, the actual race lasts 26.2 - which is a hard enough task in itself, but becomes even harder when you add in unpredictable weather circumstances and crowds.

So congratulations to both of the running winners! Their hardwork should be an inspiration for all.

If you're looking into training for the 2010 NYC Marathon, you've got yourself plenty of time! The next marathon is scheduled for November 7, 2010.

Have you ever ran a marathon before? What is the training like? If not, what has stopped you from doing so?

I always wonder why it was so late in the year, especially when it's in the NE where the weather is just to plain crazy in November.

I ran the Los Angeles Marathon this past May. It was a really great experience for me because I began training in late September and stuck to it the whole time. It was very difficult at times and I was injured a few times, but I recovered and kept to it. Challenging myself like that built me in an emotional and physical sense. It was a really awesome experience! I am currently trainig for the next LA Marathon again. I love it.

    I HIGHLY recommend it!

Shouldn't this be "congratulations to everyone who ran the NYC marathon"?

At least three people didn't die in this marathon like they did the Detroit Marathon this year.  (The 3 that died were half-marathon runners, to be specific.)

I've run 11 marathons, and am training for my 12th in a few weeks. When I started training for my first, I had no idea how many more I'd do. I basically just try to get in 25-40 miles a week, with whatever school or work schedule I'm juggling at the time. I do 3 20 mile runs on weekends, and try to get in a few 10+ mile runs on weekends as well. Doing a lot of shorter races during training helps me work on my speed.

To JoeytheGenie- I ran my first marathon when I was 18. I wish you luck qualifying for Boston on your first try; it took me 4 years before I got a good enough time. Running Boston this past April was one of the highlights of my life.
