The Master Cleanse: Is it healthy?

    This post has come from
steph@Datingish. Can we help her, Healthkickers?

One of my friends has asked me to do the Master Cleanse with her. I'm really unsure if I should do it because I don't know much about it, and whether or not it's healthy to do.

I've attempted to research it on the internet and such, but I'm really not sure what to believe.

Has anyone tried this cleanse, or know anything about it?

the first day a friend of mine did it, she threw up.

since it's a detox, I would make sure to keep the rest of the day free. also, buy a lot of toilet paper...

It sounds like a terrible idea.  I don't believe in extreme detox diets.

It's obviously not HEALTHY. C'mon, nothing but maple syrup, lemons, cayenne pepper, and salt water for days at time is not good for the body. But this diet was designed for quick weight loss, not to promote health.

The Master Cleanse is pretty much just starving yourself.

Do it the right way and stop eating.

there is no part of this that even remotly sounds like it could be good for you. i mean come on lemons and maple syrup..?? salt water and Cayenne pepper??? ummmm. not for me, thanks. good luck trying. i know it would make me feel like shit. i think if you are looking to loose weight then just control how much you eat... dont starve yourself with lemmons. if you are looking to detox your body there are better safer ways to do it... just my 2 cents.

I will refer you to this video by an actual nutritionist on that diet.

The man who invented the Master Cleanse (Stanley Burroughs) has practiced medicine without a license, and he was even charged with a second-degree felony murder for letting people with cancer die because he was "treating" them with his bullshit "medicine".

Detox diets are bullshit, in general.  Just eat right, let your body do what it does naturally, and you'll be fine.

My mom has done it, but only one or two days a week for a few weeks.  I don't think it would be good to only eat the lemon-syrup mixture for a long period of time.

  • Ulma@xanga

I have actually heard that those ingredients will supply you with the minerals and quite a lot of vitamins that you'll need. Just research the nutritional information within each ingredient.
I doubt it can hurt you, I however don't really have any faith is those detox things, physically I doubt they make a difference, however mentally they can be quite refreshing once completed.
Just don't do it for too long.

Healthy eating include grain, meat, fruit and vegetable in proportion. Look at what you eat in the Master Cleanse. You don't need to be smart to know that it is no good. It's only common sense. For more health common sense, go to

i've never heard of it actually. you should consult a physician who examines colons and does colonoscopies as a profession....they would definitely know best!

  • UnrevealedTruth_xo@xanga

Because resricting what you consume to lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper is healthy. People need to actually think before they do something this stupid.

I didn't use a master cleanse, but I used a form of cleansing from the product Almased, a synergy-protein based diet that replaces meals in your day with a protein shake.  It controls hunger and provides your body the nutrients you need in a day. You have about two or three, and your choice of either a broth at the end of the day, or another protein shake.  I lost over 50 lbs from December to May.  It's not unhealthy because my doctor told me (in August) that I was the healthiest I've ever been, and I kept active and play softball all year-round.  I also had to switch to all-organic foods to maintain my weight.  I've never heard of the master-cleanse, but I'm sure it's not as effective or healthy as some other diets.

  • russianmuse@xanga

It's supposedly okay in the (very) short-term, but anything which misses out pretty much every single food group is a no-no by me!
I tried to do it a couple of years ago...and lasted a day. I got too hungry!
