  • I Think Cigarettes Suck

    I Think Cigarettes Suck
    source

My sister got caught smoking cigarettes by my mother, who is not someone you want to get caught by. A year or two ago when I found out that my sister smoked cigarettes, I wondered why. I had tried one before and it sure didn't taste good. She wasn't pressured into it, and it was her own personal choice. Maybe it looked cool in the movies, and maybe she wanted a way to relax, but hey, why not try some yoga or something? Cigarette smoking is a horrible habit, and to be addicted to it is horrible.

Did you know that every eight seconds that someone dies from tobacco use? Putting these "cancer sticks" in your mouth is so life threatening. Teens may not think so right now, but how about thirty years later when you develop lung cancer? And its not just you who you are affecting, its the people around you. Because I am around my sister when she smokes, I am getting second hand smoke, and who knows, maybe I'll get lung cancer instead of her. People affect everyone around them, and its selfish to only think that youre hurting yourself.

There are many bad things that occur once you have smoked for a while. You may not see the effects right now, but you will. Just some effects are yellowed teeth, smelling bad, getting high blood pressure, shortness of breath, dizziness, wrinkles and nasuea. You can avoid all of these things - and more serious things like cancer and death - if you just put down the cigarette. Sure, its not that easy, but there are so many ways you can stop. Nicotine patches and gum, and tons of medications are available to stop the craving for another cigarette.

Stopping now could save your life, and your money. It is almost $5 for a box of cigarettes... and if you smoke a pack every two days, thats over $70 a month!

So next time you go and light up a cigarette, think about how you are affecting yourself, your friends and family, your lifestyle, your finances and your future.

I do NOT get cigarettes at all.  They are a health and money drain.  That alone makes me never want to pick them up!!

  • carydeeluxe@xanga

    this post is beyond redundant.

  • HisKeiki@xanga

    I think they suck, too.

  • UnrevealedTruth_xo@xanga

Healthkicker is letting me down lately. All the posts are always about the same things.

Kinda interesting, but they're even putting anti-cigs as previews on DVDs. Sad thing is that for the most part, ppl won't like stuff like that until they themselves feel the effects long term smoking will have on them. Many ppl use them as their break from the hour, their moment to focus on relaxation.

Now, I don't smoke, and I never will (yeah, yeah, I know, never is a strong word, but I really meant to say never) and I agree with you, second hand smoke is dangerous. Thing is, most ppl aren't fazed by stats.. but by their own personal experience.

I hate cigarettes, too. However, anyone who is smoking already is fully aware of the risks of smoking to themselves and those around them. They just choose to smoke anyway. Is it selfish? Yes. But, it is also their prerogative. I wish that more people would choose not to, though. :/

Last time I checked the cheapest cigarettes were like $10 a pack. That was around a year ago though so I donno how much those prices change.

  • tokyoexpressman@xanga

I'm currently quitting because I started seeing adverse health effects from smoking after only five years and I won't lie, I do feel better and I've saved money. I've been on Healthkicker before as a smoker arguing with people who don't smoke and while my opinion is still that it's a personal choice and that no one should be forced to quit, there are a lot of benefits to quitting.

Smokers take heart though, I've sworn not to become one of those overly preachy "I quit, so you can/should too," types, so you'll be spared lecturing from one person.

I dont smoke and  I will never do.

  • blackspiders@xanga

Where the fuck are you finding $5 cigarettes?

    Seriously, where?

  • niceBrice@xanga

Did you know cigarettes are bad for you?  They are.

Anyways, the cool kids smoke 'em, and don't forget that life is a popularity contest.  So you know what to do!

  • Athlyx@xanga

Cigarettes give me bad headaches, so if I smoke anything it'll be weed. Even though I'm cutting back on that alot now, yay. =] Cigarettes just seem like a big waste to me.

eh. As soon as I turned eighteen, I bought myself a 20 pack of light cigs. I guess because I wanted to use one of my newly given rights to me because I smoked a cigarette once with my friends and didn't think it was that special. I also thought it would give me something to do at school other than going on the internet and that it would relax me.

But they didn't relax me and all that smoking did was desensitize my taste buds. LAME. So I sold them to minors and I'm not smoking again. Well not smoking cigarettes, anyway. I'm down for some hookah any day.
  • CuriousiTea@xanga

People who smoke are fully aware of the consequences. If it were that easy to just put them down and stop, I would've quit way before I actually did.

  • MangoWOW@xanga

And soon will come the barrage of smokers with their attacks on how smoking isnt that bad and how they're so kick ass because they smoke and because we're pansies because we dont. 9__9

    Anyways, nice post.

All the cigarettes in Georgia (with the exception of Atlanta) are under $5 a pack.

Also, why even bother writing a blog about how much you hate cigarettes on a health oriented blogging site?  That's like standing up and saying "You know what?  This is gonna sound pretty crazy but I hate Nazis and the holocaust!  I just hate it!"
It's not an original position- everyone hates nazis.  Likewise, on a health oriented site everyone is going to disapprove of cigarettes.

I totally agree. for the most part.

Just in the summer my boyfriend had informed me that he had his first cigarette . I personally don't like smoking, my parents smoked while i was growing up.And i would always complain about having migranes and not feeling good.In grade 4 i went for some allergy tests and found out that cigarettes are the second thing that i am most allergic to. So when my boyfriend had told me he smoked I wasn't very happy. He has informed me prior that he - wanted - to start smoking, because it relaxes him. But i felt the same way as you, why not choose an alternative thats healthy?  If the only reason your smoking is to relax, is it really worth everything that it will do to your body in the future? And what it'll do to those around you? I highly doubt it. After the first time, I never really said i wanted him to not smoke because i didnt want to be the gf thats constantly bagging on her bf about stuff. But after the next few times and a few incidents of him bringing up smoking i was getting frustrated and did lay it on him. Not only did he know how i felt about smoking, but he also knows how it affects me. So obviously, if he smokes i'm not going to want to be around him. And it kind of hurt knowing that he would smoke anyways, even if it meant i wouldnt get to see him.  There actually was an instance where i wasn't doing anything on a friday night and i had been talking to him and he said he had smoked to cigarettes. Then later on he said he wanted to hangout, but since he smoked he knew i wouldnt want to.  Why jeopardize spending time with people, for a cigarette? it's not worth it in my eyes. He says now that he won't smoke, but he keeps trying to make deals with me. which I am not happy about. and he knows that, so I am hoping he'll realize soon enough why I don't want him to be smoking. I don't want to lose him in the future due to something so insignificant.

Smoking is gross. My brother is trying to quit. It's hard for him but he's cut back a lot. His gf entered herself and him into this "Love Your Lungs" run on Sunday. I think it's a great cause.
I always get nasty headaches from being around second hand smoke. If I can I walk away from it but sometimes I'm in a situation where I can't. Like if I'm in a car with people, what am I gonna do get out and walk?
    I won't kiss a guy who smokes...EW!

  • tsh44@xanga

Cigarettes don't suck, they are harmless until they are put in the mouth. It's the smokers who are suckers. They suck on cigs and the cigs drain them of money and sometimes make them sick. Like anything else it's the addiction that is the problem.

  • anorexique_xo@xanga

yes, smoking is bad for your health. just about everyone is well aware of this. all smokers choose to smoke despite the risks, which is their own personal choice. however, there is no scientific data that supports the claim that second hand smoking is harmful because research has shown that risks from exposure to second hand smoke are so small that they are insignificant. in the u.s., most of the information relayed to the public about the dangers of second hand smoking comes directly or indirectly from the 1993 EPA report. according to robert a. levy, a highly published scholar with a Ph.D in business from american university and J.D. george mason university school of law, the "1993 report by the Environmental Protection Agency declar[es] that ETS is a dangerous carcinogen that causes 3,000 deaths annually. Five years later, a federal judge lambasted EPA for "cherry picking" the data, excluding studies that "demonstrated no association between ETS and cancer," and withholding "significant portions of its findings and reasoning in striving to confirm its a priorihypothesis." More recently, in the May 2003 British Medical Journal, researchers found that passive smoke had no significant connection with heart disease or lung cancer death at any level of exposure at any time. Those results, stated the American Council on Science and Health, are "consistent" with studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." (click here for full article) in other words, the so-called facts the u.s. media blasts about the dangers of second hand smoke are based on an unscientific report that manipulated data to fit a prior agenda. isn't that just fantastic? it's almost upsetting to think about all of the money and resources people are putting into limiting smoking to protect people from exposure to second hand smoke when nothing has proven that second hand smoke is, in fact, dangerous. there are so many other REAL problems that people could be addressing. so, again, i'll state that cigarette smoking is harmful to the smoker, but second hand smoking is insignificant. this means that your sister is harming herself by smoking, but she isn't harming you or anyone else around her.

    I Think I Don't Care.
everyone know smoking is bad. But If someone smoke, it's not your
business. and don't say that it's because you enhale the smoke of
others; you breathe and eat and drink and put on your skin and hair so much shit, that other's smoke isn't
    the real problem.

sorry for the bad english, but it's not my first language

  • twistandshoutx@xanga

smoking is so gross, and so stupid. really. obviously.

  • hopethatitglows@xanga

    @carydeeluxe@xanga - Seriously!

This isn't a breakthrough or anything...just the same thing everyone has been hearing since they were in elementary school. If someone wants to smoke, they will...if they don't, they won't. Simple as that...
