Video!: What's Wrong With This Little Girl?
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
On Wednesday, the Today show ran a story about a 12-year-old Virginia girl who can’t stop sneezing. Two weeks ago, she had a head cold and ever since then, she hasn’t been able to stop sneezing every few seconds, except in her sleep.
So far, the doctors seem to be considering two options. Some people believe that this is related to a problem with her sinus health, but others think that this may not be a sneeze at all, but rather an uncontrollable tic. Psychological disorders such as Turrets and OCD can manifest in such behavior. As it turns out, it is actually possible for untreated Strep throat to cause OCD like behavior. This is a condition known as PANDAS. The Today show has set the girl up with some of the best doctors in the world. Hopefully someone will have a correct diagnosis-and some help for her-soon.
Have you ever heard of anything like this before?

Sounds like a mental thing. If it doesn't happen when she is sleeping then it probably isn't physical or at least not completely physical.
My daughter had a cough for years... though it was more apparent during stressful times. From my research I concluded it was a "habit cough". So, kind of like a tic, when she was nervous/stressed. One of her teachers kept trying to send her home, I tried to explain that she's not sick. Her teacher demanded a doctors note... so we went to the docs, had chest x-rays, allergy, and asthma testing done- all normal. Now I'm stuck with a $242 bill and the same answer- habit cough.
We homeschool now- and her cough is GONE! Even when we go on field trips w/ other homeschooled kids- I haven't heard her cough in so long- it's great! So yeah, habit sneeze is my guess lol.
That is certainly unique. Not the worst problem to have in the world, but getting a boyfriend might be difficult if she can't make out without sneezing...haha. Okay, that was probably mean, but still, ya gotta wonder...
Oh and it's TOURETTE Syndrome. If this is supposed to be a legit health site, at the very least, use spell check.
The video has been removed...?
@Lulabell_88@xanga - i got that too...
@tigerdauphin@xanga - I think if you did, it would wake you up.
She's not sneezing. You close your eyes when you sneeze because there's so much pressure, don't you?
@sarahzthoughts@xanga - Yes, the misspelling bothered me a lot, too... especially since I have Tourette Syndrome.
It looks like that girl has Tourette's to me.
I would think it is just a tic of some sort, maybe tourettes, she doesn't close her eyes also no watery eyes, redness, and is mouth sneezing... not nose sneezing, nothing generally associated with sneezing. I know if I sneeze, even a teeny tiny sneeze, my eyes start to water and my face gets red... and I definitely close my eyes
@CuriousiTea@xanga - I noticed she doesn't close her eyes either
Saw it thiught it was funny. "it's cute"
i don't even think thats sneezing. shes just making those noises.
lol @ pandas.
& they're definitely not sneezes...half the time her eyes remain totally open...we all know it's impossible to sneeze with you eyes open!
This kid makes me want to kick her
...?? this is odd.
@karmavore@ireallylikefood - Yup, I'll have to go with the strong inference that it may be Tourette's. Once you've mentioned all those things, it made me start to wonder and it slightly frustrates me that it could be a crazy tic.
@elizabethtravis@xanga - Sadly, I feel the same way too.
Sorry for the spelling mistake. It was kind of late at night when I wrote this. Their going to give an update on the Today show, so I'll let you know what the official diagnosis is. I agree that it is mental, but I don't think she's doing it on purpose.
Oh- and the video was stripped but it is back now.
Yes, I've heard of someone getting the hiccups one day and it lasts for years. Strange. I'd never like to have something like that. At least it stops when she's asleep, though. That would suck to have to wake up every few minutes to sneeze. :/
@Heartzmusick@xanga - Are you ignorant? That's not cute, it's sad you stupid shit. She can't stop sneezing and you think it's funny??
How would you like it if you couldn't stop sneezing your shit out??? It wouldn't be cute would it. Dumb monkey.
It doesn't look like she's sneezing.
I'm going to go with the general consensus and say it's a tic.
I could be wrong, but it looks she's just making the /ch/ sound that happens when you sneeze...only without the actual sneeze.
it's a possible PANDAS case.

Holy damn, I'm glad I don't have uncontrollable sneezes. My sneezes are very...loud and powerful.
Haha.@omg_lustdoll@xanga - Did you notice that the lady interviewin the little girl said it was cute? But other than that I wondered if you felt better? Did you get all the words out you wanted to? Well I hope you did. One day you will laugh to and I hope no one calls you any of the names you called me. Have a good Christmans and a Happy New Year~
