HELP: I'm 22 but My Joints Hurt Like a 65 Year Old
This comes as a message to Healthkicker. Can we help?I've got aching knees, tennis elbow (minus the tennis) and fingers that I could crack five times an hour.
I eat fairly healthy, I exercise when I can, but have had several injuries (torn ligaments, sprained fingers and ankles, broken finger and arm... well, you get the picture).
My friends always yell at me for cracking my knuckles, back and elbows, but they don't understand that when I don't crack these joints, I'm in a helluva lot of pain.
I do think though, that if I were to stop cracking all these joints in my body...I may be able to relieve some of this joint-pain in another way. I just don't know where to start.
What's a good way to relieve tension in your joints? Are there creams or medications that I can look into to relieve some the pressure in my joints (and hopefully get rid of some this pain)? I am only 22 and I feel like a 65 year old man!

Every single joint of mine cracks, nearly every time I move (I'm a 20 year old female). But I have a severe vitamin D deficiency that's given me osteomalacia, so that's my problem.
Go get a blood test to check your vitamin levels - vitamins can throw a lot out of whack. Meantime, go get a D supplement. Make sure it's bio-accessible.
See a doctor.
I'm brilliant.
I was a dancer for many many years. I partially tore my MCL (the ligament that runs down the inside of your knee) and I also have almost no cartiledge left in that knee due to repeat impacts. As it was, I could barely walk I was in so much pain and I was 18. After physical therapy, my PT suggested that I start to take a glucosamine mixture. I did some research, but my mom started me on what she had been taking for years (both of her knees were dislocated in child birth 32 years ago, so she knows). I've been taking glucosmanie/chondroitin with msm in it for 3 years now and I can run and dance with almost no pain at all. There are still days where I'm stiff and sore but those are very slim. I know I sound like a walking billboard but this stuff works and I wouldn't tell you if I didn't think it could help. The brand I take is Flexamin. Its comes in a purplish box. I take two a day, in the morning. Should take about 7 days for you to feel the full effect, but when it works you feel almost brand new. Hope this helps! Any questions you can message me!
oh wow...i've felt this way before! like 3 years ago! (Im almost 20 now) my joints were killing me! always popping my fingers and knees!! weird. and then I could barely walk! i went and got checked and found out that i had Lupus.. some type of arthritis crap! you need to get checked though.. asap! =)
I used to be like that when I was about 19/20.
Now I can't say for sure that we're similar but I know that I tried drinking more water and eating more fruit and frankly I even forgot I had the problem. It's only sometimes afterward, 3 to 4 months, that I noticed: "Hey! I haven't felt any pain in awhile!"
I'm like that too. Can hardly grip anything with my right hand as well. And I work on a computer. And I'm 24.
wow, lots of good answers above. well.. since it could be a number of things... go to a doctor. get a diagnosis. go online. research to see if you agree with the diagnosis. if you dont, go back to doctor and tell thm what you think. get a second opionion if you need to. comply with treatment when you get it. take care!

I pop every time I move... the one people freak out over is my pelvis cracks. I find yoga can help, or frequent stretching, but really, I just keep cracking along... it's not ideal, but it stops the ache. I have been cracking since I was 13 (woah 10 years now).
It could be that you have West Nile Virus. All it takes is one stupid infected mosquito bite. It will make all your joints hurt like h*ll, you'll feel tired and lethargic all the time. It is debilitating, and won't go away on it's own. Usual treatment is steroids.
You need to get a good checkup and good blood workup to see what is going on. Vitamin deficiencies, Lupus, West Nile, imbalanced diet, can all play a role.
Obviously you need to look at your diet and exercise levels. Try swimming and see if the joint pain is as intense in the water as out. That is a clue the Dr can use to correctly diagnose what you have happening. You should not feel 65 at 22. Don't put it off. Call Monday and set up an appointment.
As a future physician, and a person that has gone through debilitating joint and muscle pain since she was 13 years old - my best advice is to see a doctor. I know in this day and age many people do not have access to health care, but you really need to be diagnosed by a professional that can manage your case.
Do anti-inflammatories help? Motrin, tylenol, etc....Otherwise, have you tried strengthening or stretching exercises for those affected areas? Perhaps massage therapy? I know that has helped me quite a lot over the years....Also, try ice (or heat) to minimize localized pain. I prefer heat because I am extremely cold intolerant, which causes my muscles to spasm in place of joint pain! Have you tried swimming/floating in water to relieve tension?
Do you take a multivitamin daily? Try taking a multivitamin plus supplements such as Omega 3/6 and vitamin D. Are you drinking enough water? Try drinking an additional glass or two everyday than you are used to.
I just started going to a chiropractor, and it has helped my pain immensely. It could be that your back is out, and is affecting the rest of your body. They do ask you if you've had any pain in your limbs and such.
I agree that you should see a doctor. Joint pain can be a sign of things like fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. In terms of lifestyle changes, I think that yoga has helped me a lot with my knee and hip injuries (just be sure to tell the teacher that you have joint issues so they can give you modified poses). There is also a supplement called chondroitin that promotes joint health-but you should ask your doctor before you take it. Good luck. Hope you feel better.Â
I'm gonna tell you right now, I am 19 years old and I have had Rheumatoid Arthritis since I was 6 years old. I'm not sure how long this has been going on for you, but I would surely get it checked out. I mean, I know this sounds like the logical answer but there are some joint diseases out there (like mine) that generally affect the joints, but can also affect other organs and have wierd side affects on your body. For example, R.A. is to blame for some of my stomach aches, for a random sore throat, it makes my liver weaker than others and gives me a thin heart lining, it can cause unexplained headaches, etc. It can even escalate and make you crippled for life if not treated properly, which seems to be the path I am headed down if I don't go in for a check up with my doctor which is a couple years over due since the last time I went. You should take my advice seriously... since I have been putting off going to the doctors, I have just discovered about a week ago this wierd swelled up ball over a joint in my wrist. I tried to ignore it until other people started pointing it out to me in horror.
I'm just sayin, it could be waaay more serious than you ever imagined. Better get it examined before you reach the point of no return. And they can give you better medicine to take down the swelling. For example, Naproxen is common and it can be found in a brand of Tylenol and if taken everyday, can bring down the swelling and pain tremendously. If you ever need advice on joint pain and have any further questions about it or R.A. specifically, I can tell you my story and inform you on anything you need to know within my knowledge. And please, get it checked out... it can get ugly if you don't.
There are various causes of joint pain ranging from mild aliments to the severe. Only your doctor can analyze you health and give you the advice you need.
I am young (18) and had terrible, aching joint pain for months. Turns out I have hemochromatosis
why not try hyaluronic acid? check it out. you can find it on vitamin websites or in your local pharmacy store
@LoveYouToDeath16@xanga - You're right about this. I developed RA after nearly dying from 2 different heart infections - was in a coma for 3 months - in the hospital for 10 months. When I got out, I was in a wheelchair. I haven't been able to walk, can't even sleep in my bed anymore. My back won't bend, I can't lay flat so have to sleep sitting up. Just had a hip replaced and now need both knees done. I use to be a concrete contractor, built silo's, finished cement. I was as strong as a bull. Now I have to use a walker and a cane. People don't know how damaging arthritis can be. It can hit at an early age, even affect your internal organs, your eyes too.
I talked to my doctor once and he said that what they learn in med school as a rule of thumb is, "Help your joints. Smoke a joint." That's the best method to help after a hard run or arm workout.
I have this problem too! Mostly my right hip though. It's terrible, isn't it? >_> I'm not even 18 yet.
@schallerbrandon@xanga - Lol. I agree.
@dikdoktor@xanga - Yes! People need to realize that R.A. is a big deal. And people need to be informed that it can hit at any age, it's not just an "old person disease." Some people don't even believe me when I say I have it at such a young age, they think I am lying. And then others think I am complaining and use my R.A. as an excuse to not do things like P.E. at my school, or that I can't carry a tray at work (Restaurant) because I always feel like my wrists are going to collapse; they just think I'm being lazy. I hate telling people I have R.A. and it hurts to do things, because I feel they don't understand and that I'm just making excuses. But people need to be informed, they need to know the harsh reality of moderate to severe R.A. I'm sorry to hear about your struggles, and I feel your pain. I have trouble when I'm driving because of my neck and back. Keep on pushin... remember, you're not alone and some of us are there sufferin along side you.

helps me tremendously. Basically the muscle coating gets tense and needs to be released. Doing so relieves excess lactic acid among other things which can cause joint ache and head ache. Thought I had two knees in need of surgery and chronic tendonitis. Maybe I do, but manipulating the tp's relives the pain and allows me to teach martial arts
You might have a vitamin D deficiency.
i would go see a doctor about that all... i am very active and 24, i have broken a wrist. had two surgeries to repair a miniscus, nerve transposition. i have a messed up shoulder and stressed fractured shins. and messed up ankles...i have eaten well, i do not eat as well as one should normally, but i try... but being so active and over active i should say, you end up putting more stress on your joints then normal and cause all thee injuries. my first surgeon warned me if i didnt stop i would not have a knee left by the time i was 35, i took his advice and slowed down the running and now i have slowed down the baseball after elbow surgery...i refuse to give up the surfing regardless... just pay attention to your body and also, talk to a doctor, there might be more going on then you know.
