Can You Get Addicted to Smoking from Second-Hand Smoke?
source
Hey Healthkickers, here's question from my_secret_diary_xx@xanga.com.
Can we help provide some advice or answers?Just a simple question.
I've been wondering if you can get addicted to smoking from passive smoking. Lately I've really been craving a smoke... but I've never smoked in my life. The only reason I can think of is that I've had people smoking around me my whole life.
Is it possible to get addicted to smoking from passive, or second-hand smoke?

I think you can develop a taste for/craving for smoking, but not addiction from that.
It's not a true addiction, just a craving (weak passive addiction). I've noticed it in quite a few people whom have been around smokers their entire lives, including myself.
No.
When I am around my friends who smoke, I find myself wanting to smoke. I've had one cigarette in my entire life and I found it revolting. I doubt you can get addicted, but cravings, sure.
btw, i didn't give in. i threw out the cigarette i had and didn't smoke it.
NO - maybe you have an oral fixation... have you smoked anything else before?
or have you ever tasted any tobacco products?
or do you like the smell of the smoke?
etc

*I* smoke, and I'm not addicted to smoking.
My parents have smoked around me since I was born, I'm 19 now, and I've never had the desire to smoke.
i don't think addicted but my grandpa has COPD from being exposed to second hand smoke so i would get yourself outta those situations-second hand smoke is bad for you despite arguments.
Not addicted, but second-hand smoke definitely can harm your health. And if you have actually smoked yourself previously, perhaps the smell of second-hand smoke makes you crave a cigarette.
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - i've never smoked anything, and i don't like the smell of smoke because it makes me feel like i cant breathe :S
Only IF you give in and SMOKE!
We all know that smoking is bad for us, whether it is through us smoking the cigarette ourselves or through second hand smoke! So why do so many of you choice to say this OVER AND OVER rather than answer the question the poster asked?
I find it rude and obnoxious when people do that!
I doubt it. My parents have smoked around me pretty much my entire life and I have absolutely no desire to take it up. None.
no.
You cannot become addicted to cigarettes from second hand smoke, but you may like the smell of it or find it stress relieving depending on memories where you've breathed it in.
in this life, ANYTHING is possible. But I doubt it. Just whatever you do, don't pick up the habit. It's addictive and deadly. Anytime you inhale poison into your lungs there is considerable damage. Take care of yourself!
When I was in high school, all my friends smoked cigarettes, and I found myself craving it. I used to sit behind them in class so I could sniff their jackets (I was a little weird.)
Nope, you're not inhaling the nicotine, which is the addicting part... just all the other nasty garbage that goes along with it. You may acquire a "taste" for the smell, but not an addiction. It would be like craving an ice cream cone or a bag of chips.
Well dear, But Not addicted, second-hand smoke
definitely can harm your health. And if you have actually smoked
yourself previously, perhaps the smell of second-hand smoke makes you
crave a cigarette.
Not gonna lie, I love the smell of second hand smoke, yet I would never smoke.
No. You've seen people doing it for years and you've picked up the smell of the smoke. It's a "well it works for other people" association, combined with a craving for the smell of the smoke. But you can't create an addiction just from being around secondhand.
I suppose if you frequently sit with someone who's smoking - like, every day - it could happen, but it's pretty unlikely. It's just a mild craving. I actually smoke cigarettes from time to time, and I'm not addicted.
