Does Competing with Other Gym Goers Motivate You To Work Out Harder?
(Video from Only in A Woman's World)
Have you ever competed against other gym goers when you were working out? For instance, trying to run faster or longer on a treadmill than the person next to you, or trying to lift weights that are too heavy for you just to prove how strong you are to other gym members? Do you think competing with others motivate you to work out harder?

Yes. They just don't know it. ;)
vote for me!- Please and TY!
Yes, especially on the treadmill! I try to outrun every girl up there when it comes to speed and duration. Of course I only compete with the girls, the men at the gym are beasts when it comes to running. O_o
I don't know if the same applies for guys because it's a lot more obvious and the guys end up looking like tools. My boyfriend comes to the gym with me to lift and says the guys who try to be hardasses up there, though trying to show off and lift heavier weight, usually have terrible form, which is vital for lifting! So in the end they are only fooling themselves!
only time I compete is during xc practice - during track practice I just try to keep up, I hate speed.
in the weightroom at school I`m the only girl - not to mention the guys are there to build muscles so they do heavy weight + low reps but I`m there to build strength so I do light weight + high reps
No. No it does not.
It does for me. Even today while I was on a cardio machine I was trying to keep up with the girl next to me or even go faster. I also think seeing changes in people you regularly see there or seeing the more fit individuals gives me huge motivation.
If people competed against me they would all be fat.
It does motivate you to try harder.. I use to be able to press with my legs a mere 300 lbs... After about 3 weeks, I was about o press 500+ lbs.... All because I wanted to do more than the body builders... lol..
Ha! I totally do. On the ellipticals, I speed up if the person next to me is going faster.
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - LOL!
No that's just annoying and totally obvious. It's like get out of my face and let me run and stop trying to outrun me when you can't. kthxbai
Not directly; Whenever I've been going to the gym for a bit and start looking better, looking around at the other guys at the gym gives me something more to shoot for
i've seen others try to keep up with me. i usually stay on the elliptical for an hour or more. i variegate my speeds but i keep my levels pretty high. others will come in and hang with me for a while til they realize i'm gonna be there way longer than they anticipated! i take it as a compliment.
No, I do everything at my own pace. I don't wanna hurt myself.
I often do that.
Not really, because I know I'm doing other stuff OUTSIDE the gym, and for all I know, that's their only workout of the day. Somedays I'll run then go to the gym and do the elliptical or something for thirty minutes for a little extra cardio. I'm not going to compete with someone going for an hour, because there's a chance that's all their doing for the day. There are times on the treadmill if someone got there before me, I'll just work to go at least until after they are finished. I hate treadmills, so I have to have SOMETHING to keep me going for longer than 10 minutes :)
yeah Im competitive in almost every aspect of my life. school, work, power.....working out is not an exception. Its a motivator for sure.
No. It absolutely does not. In fact, having other people at the gym (especially those enormous chain gyms that look like they belong in a huge underground city in a bad futuristic sci-fi movie like Logan's Run such as the one that's invaded my little town and wiped the real gyms off the map) makes me less likely to even go.
I can't stand to have people seeing me sweaty, even if they're sweaty and doing the same things. I also can't tolerate the idea of gym as social club, which is what those huge gyms also seem to be.
So, I've set up my own little exercise paradise at home on my sun porch. There I can be comfortable, can sweat in peace and privacy and not have to worry about competing with someone else. I can just get into my workout and concentrate on my own health and fitness.
yes, i do it on the treadmill and bike.
I will be running or riding, and some girl will go next to me, and i make it a point not to stop, until she gets off.
idk why.. but it helps to keep going
Oh yes I have definitely experienced this. When doing yoga, I often overstretch myself beyond what I should be doing. And when I'm running at school with my class I always make sure I'm at the front. I'm just competitive though. That's how I do everything.
@MissHollywoodStarlet@xanga - why are you afraid of people seeing you sweaty? your at a gym to get sweaty, if your not sweating your not working out or losing any weight... when i go to the gym, i sweat like a mo'fo, but i dont care because i know that everyone else is sweaty (maybe not as sweaty as me) but i like that, bcuz im getting a good work out! (trust me no one cares how sweaty you are) i dont even pay attention to how sweaty others are.. trust me :)
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - can we say cocky?
@xo__crazybeautiful@xanga - Are you retarded? I was implying I don't work out very hard.
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - oh sorry, i thought you were implying that they should just give up, and stay fat because they wont be able to keep up
@xo__crazybeautiful@xanga - no i iz lazeh
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - hahahah
