What Causes Muscle Spasms?

source
This post came to us in a message from a non-Healthkicker user.
Can we help?Today at work I was minding my business when all of a sudden I got this terrible twitch in my eye. Now, nearly eight hours later, although it had stopped before, it seems to be back.
What is also interesting is that the muscle in my wrist has spasmed twice around the same time my eye twitch started, and both times it was for more than two minutes.
I'm wondering ... what causes muscle spasms and twitches? Could the wrist twitch and eye twitch be related?

Twitches are essentially minor cramps. Cramps (like after running or something) occur because the fibres in your muscles get tired, lactic acid builds up, etc.
Basically, an eye/wrist/whatever twitch is because you're tired. Sleep and it should go away.
@muses_muse@xanga - Yah. And don't forget electrolyte imbalance.
I get eye twitches all the time, even when I'm well-rested. The area right under my eye twitches a lot. Anyone care to explain the medical reasoning behind it?
i get it when i'm stressed & sleep-deficient. in other words, preparing for exams.
My back muscles twitched insanely one time when I finished trying to rock climb for the first time in a while.
AND IT WAS AWEESOMEEEEE.
Since its affecting completely different parts of your body that don't exactly get a work out which would build up lactic acid my guess is an electrolyte imbalance. It can be caused by an imbalance in your potassium, calcium, or sodium.
Are you dehydrated (hypernatremia), have you been taking colonics or have had diarrhea (hypokalemia), have you been vomitting, fever laterly,.. there could be a whole slew of reasons.
If you start getting abdominal cramps, fatigue, or fuzzy headed then go to to the doctor ASAP.
Almost all of my muscles twitch or spasm every so often. When I'm stressed out my eye lids go nuts. When I'm on the computer for too long my wrists and fingers twitch. Parts of my back twitch no matter what I do.
Awesome & many thanks...
I've had those weird things on my eye's nearly all my adult life - I've even tried to 'SEE' them moving in the mirror, to NO avail...
GLAD I'm NOT alone !
Many thanks...
Blessings !
it could be dehydration or minor deficiencies in magnesium, calcium, vitamin D. hope that helps (:
every once in a while my arm or thumb twitches or spasms.
according to doctors, unless it's everyday for a prolonged period, it isn't serious. a LOT of people get benign muscle spasms, or get them for reasons they wouldn't consider or reasons they'd dismiss.
For a few months now, I've had this constant twitch in the skin of the crease of my left eye. I don't feel it and it's not noticable unless there's light shining on it. I've no clue why it's doing that and why it won't stop.
could be neurological...try sleeping it off, and if it doesn't go away, see a doctor
@Southeast_Beauty@xanga - I had a friend tell me that eye twitches are more often than not the nerve endings dying... Not as thought that's going to make you feel any better about it.
