Vegetarian on Thanksgiving? Try this Gravy Recipe!
Many of my friends are vegetarians, and so when Thanksgiving rolls around, they always find themselves in a pickle. Aside from their Tofurkey, they've always experienced issues when trying to figure out how to get out of using meat or meat-based products when it comes to dinner.Well fret no more, vegetarians! Here is a vegetarian recipe for a delicious "turkey" gravy, courtesy of AllRecipes.com.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon yeast extract spread, e.g. Marmite/Vegemite
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups hot water
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
Cooking Instructions:
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in yeast extract spread, onion powder, and salt until smooth.
- Gradually whisk in 1 1/2 cups water so no lumps form. Bring to a boil.
- In a small cup, stir together 1/2 cup cold water and cornstarch. Stir the cornstarch mixture into the saucepan, and continue boiling until thickened.
- Cool slightly before serving.
Are you a vegetarian who celebrates Thanksgiving? What are other vegetarian dishes that can be enjoyed on Thanksgiving?See here for the full recipe (link).

not to be Debbie Downer or anything, but there's butter in this recipe...
its a vegetarian recipie not vegan ... so theres no problem with butter
Yeah, I was gonna say that a lot of vegetarians would be against this if they tend to lean more toward vegan than straight vegetarian. But it sounds good!
I think Vegemite tastes like compost mixed with dog shit, so I'll have to pass on this recipe. This gives me the idea to research other vegetarian gravy recipes, though. So thanks. :) Mashed potatoes are so much better with gravy, and I haven't been able to have them that way for many years. I think I will be bringing some to Thanksgiving this year.
@methodElevated@xanga - i plan on posting one, hope you like mushrooms =)
Heres a vegan one I am going to do up for my site:
Ingredients
3/4 cup white or button mushrooms, chopped
1 small yellow or white onion, minced
1/4 cup vegan margarine
2 1/2 cups vegetable broth
2 tbsp soy sauce
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp each of sage and thyme
salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:In a large skillet, melt the vegan margarine and add onion and mushrooms. Sautee for just a minute or two over high heat.
Reduce heat to medium and add vegetable broth and soy sauce. Slowly add flour, stirring well to combine and prevent lumps from forming. Bring to a simmer or a low boil, then reduce heat. Add sage and thyme, salt and pepper, stirring consistently. Allow to cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring regularly, until gravy thickens.
I will post photos at my site later along with the directions.
I love this recipe! It's great on rice. It can be easily made vegan with olive oil, that's what we used to do, but used much less than 4 Tblsp...my kids grew up eating this as babies, I always used nutritional yeast flakes rather than marmite
I don't know how come people want to be healthy and don't eat meat. It is no good.

@calbill - What your reasoning behind no meat = not healthy? Please don't say protein b/c my meal plan for today alone has 96g of protein in it and no meat.

Anyway, thx for posting a vegetarian recipe for the holidays.
@calbill - no

@calbill - I'm pretty sure I can beat you in every physical fitness aspect. And I don't even eat meat.
