How to Eat Slim on Thanksgiving!
I have a subscription to Cosmopolitan. I have since I was about 14. So I wanted to share some articles that I have found helpful with everyone here. I also looked on the website for their health tips and wanted to share some for people who otherwise wouldn't think about looking at Cosmo. Enjoy!
- The Chubby Choice :: Dark Meat Turkey
3 oz of dark meat turkey contains 165 calories of unhealthy, saturated fat.
Slim Swap :: White Meat Turkey
3 oz of white meat turkey contains only 100 calories. Bonus: lean protein like white meat increase satiety, making you feel fuller longer.
Calories saved - 65 - The Chubby Choice :: Candied Sweet Potato Casserole
Loaded with sugar and marshmallows, this Turkey Day fave can pack up to 430 calories per cup.
Slim Swap :: Baked Sweet Potato with Skin
A whole baked sweet potato contains only 180 calories. You'll get the health benefits of this super spud like vitamin C and E, beta-carotene, and fiber, without all the excess sure. Sprinkle ground cinnamon on it if you need a flavor boost.
Calories saved - 250 - The Chubby Choice :: Green Bean Casserole
A serving of green bean casserole is loaded with butter, cream of mushroom soup, cheese, and fried onions. No wonder it racks up 241 calories.
Slim Swap :: Steamed Veggies
Steal one cup of steamed green beans ( 44 calories ) or steamed asparagus ( 40 calories ) out of the pot. If plain veggies are too bland for you, drizzle with olive oil and ground pepper. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese for extra flavor without adding tons of unwanted calories.
Calories saved - 197 - The Chubby Choice :: Traditional Mashed Potatoes
A cup of this holiday staple, usually made with cream or whole milk and butter, is not only loaded with fat, but costs you 635 calories.
Slim Swap :: Healthy Mashed Potatoes
Trust us, we don't want to give these up either! For a waistline-friendly version ( with only 159 calories per cup ), beg Grandma to prepare them with skim milk and chicken broth instead of cream and butter.
Calories saved - 476 - The Chubby Choice :: Traditional Stuffing
A cup of stuffing made with white bread, sausage, and tons of butter contains 354 calories and is brimming with fat.
Slim Swap :: Healthy Stuffing
Lighten up this tasty side dish by using wheat bread stuffing mix and adding celery, mushrooms, and onions sauteed in olive oil instead of sausage ( 280 calories ).
Calories Saved - 74 - The Chubby Choice :: Regular Turkey Gravy
If you scoop your gravy directly from the roasting pain, you'll consume 160 calories per 1/2 cup, thanks to all the fat that drips from the turkey skin while it's cooking. ( um, Yuck! )
Slim Swap :: Trimmer Turkey Gravy
Pour the gravy directly from the pan into a fat separator, which will separate the unwanted fat from the turkey juice, which contains only 44 calories. Fat separators can be found at most hardware or cooking stores and range from $6.99 to $24.99
Calories saved - 116 - The Chubby Choice :: Spiked Cider
A mug of this holiday cocktail made with apple cider, brandy, and, yes, butter, will cost you 286 calories ... and a sugar crash.
Slim Swap :: Red Wine
A 5-oz glass of red wine contains about 100 calories plus higher levels of the healthy antioxidant resveratrol.
Calories Saved - 186 - The Chubby Choice :: Pecan Pie
Once slice of pecan pie can contain anywhere from 500 to 800 calories.. :S
Slim Swap :: Pumpkin Pie
Although pie isn't exactly diet-friendly, who can resist? Pumpkin pie has fewer calories than pecan pie, coming in at 320. Plus pumpkin is rich in vitamin A and fiber. Be sure to hold the whipped cream, though.
Calories saved - 480
Total calories saved: 2,214
So will you take the chubby choice, or the slim swap?!

I will shamelessly take the chubby choice, thank you very much. I'll be damned if I eat healthy on Thanksgiving. DAMNED!
@salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga - Agreed.
Thanksgiving is the one day of the year (not even Christmas usually) that I let myself have candied yams.
@salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga - I agree ! :)
I automatically chose the healthy one on about 1/3 of them.
But I want to eat fatly (I think I just made up a word) on Thanksgiving. =D
I do 3/4 of this stuff automatically. Like...seriously.
Buuut yea. I don't really care on Thanksgiving. xD I eat whatever I want.
My extended family usually cooks a bunch of junk that I hate which are all full of disgusting calories. I practically only eat raw veggies on Thanksgiving and usually don't even eat any turkey (or if I do, it's a tiny piece of white meat with nothing on it.)
I already do half of this stuff on a daily basis anyway, however, I will not swop the green bean casserole, for steamed veggies. F that, it's the one day of year I allow myself to have it.
Besides, every dessert we're making this year is made with low fat/sugar-free/fresh stuff...
wow, and I'd actually wondered why most Americans are fat... >.< The traditional stuff is unbelievably loaded. I'd take the slim version anyday cause my stomach would probably die a terrible death if I ate all that stuff.
@salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga - Amen!
@salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga - HAHAHA
My mum used to make a stuffing using rice instead of the traditional sort of stuffing, because I don't like it. It tasted really nice...
Well, I'm a vegetarian so all I usually have is a little mashed potatoes and corn and this year fake chicken strips mixed with gravy. Sometimes I skip dessert cause I'm just not that hungry after eating the meal.
@salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga - FOREALZ.
I'm a Chubby Chooser. (:
There's 364 OTHER days to be healthy, and Thanksgiving will not be the exception!
i honestly don't like more than half of Thanksgiving food, but honestly its a holiday people can eat whatever they choose.
I don't even eat that much on Thanksgiving to begin with, the most being a slice of my mom's double layer pumpkin pie and a few of her stuffed mushrooms. Maybe some stuffing alone.
Woah! You subscribed to cosmopolitan since you were 14? No wonder you are a teen mom. Those sex tips are insane!
@DAMN_itsz_KRYSIE@xanga - LOL I was thinking the same thing.
=]] I do almost all but 2 of these anyways.
Haha I got the ideas from diet magazines and crappp but ended up liking it anyways. =D
Get ready for after-holiday diets!
who the hell wants to eat like this on thanksgiving? thanksgiving is about being thankful, and i'm thankful i have all the fatty foods to engorge myself with e____e
I can't believe eating one big meal for one day is being termed the "chubby choice."
that's just ridiculous.Why does everyone care about being fat or not? :/
@DAMN_itsz_KRYSIE@xanga - haha!
Eat all things in moderation. If being skinny means I have to sit there on TG and eat a plain sweet potato and a slice of dried out 100 calorie breast and STEAMED veggies while everyone else is chowing down and enjoying themselves, then I will just be fat. Oh but I'm not fat and I eat whatever I want. Anyone who seriously takes any kind of tips from Cosmo deserves to be fat and unhappy. Except for their tips on how to be a slut, they do pretty well on those.
i like to think that holidays thanksgiving comes only once a year, i can take a break from my normal diet or food schedule and just enjoy eating and relax with my family, so i'll go with a chubby choice.
