  • What Do Your Cravings Say About You?

I became a vegetarian when I was fourteen-years-old. Shortly after I gave up meat, something strange happened. I began having very strong cravings for yogurt, a food I had always hated before that time. I thought my craving might have something to do with my body’s need for protein, but my doctor maintained that cravings are psychological, not physical.

A recent post on MSNBC’s health site shows otherwise. Dr. Alan Hirsch, head of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, has spent over 25 years studying the cravings, food choices, and personalities of more than 18,000 people. He has found a real link between what you are craving and your possible nutritional needs. Read the post to find out what the most common cravings-salty, spicy, sweet, and chocolate-say about you.

Which foods do you crave most often?

I became vegetarian five years ago and I'm now vegan. I never had an experience like yours, but after I made the first switch I craved salty things. Currently, I never have cravings for certain foods. After I read the article, I agree with it about salty cravings haha!

CHEESE. i love cheese. i'm a vegetarian too

  • heidi_teamaster@xanga

I don't eat meat. (wouldn't consider myself a vegetarian because if there is kosher steak around I'll eat it)  I simply don't eat it because of all of the antibiotic they force feed the animals is SO dangerous for us to eat.   Anyways, I find myself craving milk, popcorn, and Brazilian soup more than often.  The Brazilian soup is VERY spicy.

So I'll choc is up to Milk, salty, and spicy.

My doctor said when I was pregnant that cravings are usually tied to what your body needs. Like all I wanted was ice the last two weeks of being pregnant (and the first week afterwards) and the doctor said typically anemics crave ice but they weren't sure why.

I always crave salty, vinegary, and spicy things but i've been like that since birth. I'd rather eat that than sweets. I saw somewhere that people who crave salty things have salty saliva so maybe that plays into it. Eh

I crave salty foods. But I have fairly low sodium, even after indulging my cravings. And I crave sweet stuff when my blood sugar starts falling. So I think there are sometimes physical needs behind food cravings.

I love salty and savory food... oh yeah.

  • thinfriendxxo@xanga

I have different cravings all the time. Sometimes it's sweet, sometimes salty, but most often is chocolate (probably because I don't consume a lot of it - or because they place it at eye level at the till)

    Thanks
to pop culture, women think that having a body like 175cm, 54kg Heidi
Klum is the answer to a sizzling and sexy relationship.

When you really think about it, kissing is pretty gross.
It involves saliva and mucous membranes, and it may have historical
roots in chewed-up food. Experts estimate that hundreds or even
millions of bacterial colonies move from one mouth to another during
a kiss. Doctors have also linked kissing to the spread of diseases
    like meningitis, herpes and mononucleosis.

I think cravings are partially need-based.  Look at those people who have pica (people who eat non-food items habitually). Yes some are crazy,.. but doctors have also found that some crave and eat non food items that supplement an already nutrient deficit that they have. Like some who eat dirt have been found to be really deficient in phosphorus.

And maybe all those chocolate cravings just means that you're low on serotonin.  I suppose its different for everyone. :)

I don't think cravings tell you so much about your personality as much as they tell you about deficiencies your body might be facing. People don't tend to crave the same thing every time. Sometimes you need some sodium, sometimes you need some glucose. It doesn't mean you're an introvert or an extrovert or a dreamer or a loner. It just means your body is clearly pissed at you for ignoring it.

I'm a vegeterian, also. I remember craving bacon once I became vegeterian -- but that was a long time ago. Around the time I became a vegeterian which was about 2 years ago.

I get all those cravings at some point or another. But I think I get spicy the most:

    When you crave spicy food

    What it says about
your body: If you're having trouble cooling down, your body may crave a
fiery taste to make you perspire. That may seem counterintuitive, but
it helps explain why Mexican food would be popular even when temps are
scorching. Some research also suggests that people become addicted to
the rush of spicy food — the spiked blood pressure, accelerated heart
rate, and rapid breathing, says Tammy Lakatos Shames, R.D., a co-author
    of “The Secret to Skinny.”

What it says about you: You love order, dislike wasting time, and sweat the details.

I hate wasting time and I do sweat the details sometimes. As far as order goes, I'm either very anal about or I'm very spontaneous. Right now, I do have a set order in my life.

i crave all the food that's bad for you. i guess it's just an i-want-what-i-can't-have mindset..

  • Vacantwhispers@xanga

I was expecting this post to actually tell me what it means when I get cravings for the food I want, haha. Shoulda known better.

Bread, cake... stuff I shouldn't eat, ha.

The only things I ever crave are ice and those sweet, soft peppermints. Never anything else.

  • Sprnatural_luver@xanga

i carve meat, i'm not a vegetarian i avoid meat bc it make me put on more weight.

  • hopethatitglows@xanga
Last night I was craving hummus...it was insane.
  • o0_Gina_0o@xanga

I crave salty foods every now and then! It's says due to a lack of calcium in my diet, which is most probably true in my case; I hate butter and dont like milk, both rich sources of calcium.

  • tracezilla@lovelyish

I like the informative part of it, but I think the "what it says about you" as in yourself and your personality (not the about your body part) is ridiculous. I hate it when columns put stuff up like that, it just trivializes everything and is usually inaccurate. It just makes me roll my eyes.

I crave chocolate a lot of times.

And I thought it was already pretty accepted that cravings could be either psychological or physical. Or both, even.

I remember seeing a thing about a person who was stranded on a small raft in the ocean for months, and he began to crave weird parts of the fish he was eating.  What would normally be gross started to look good because his body recognized the need for nutrients stored in obscure parts of the fish.
