  • Stop Letting Food Control Your Life

Stop Letting Food Control Your Life
    source

The fact is whether we are eating too much or too little are nation is obsessed with food. Walk down the street, open a magazine, talk to a friend, go on any site on the internet- both food and ironically weight loss methods are visually thrown at you. When I was a child, I was put on a diet. I didn't understand what I had done wrong - I was so happy with the way I was. I felt punished for eating and as a consequence have struggled with it my whole life. I am sick of it; I want a day where I don't think "I'm fat."

We are a society convinced that losing weight will make us happier, confident and "pretty"; that by losing weight, we will have accomplished something. It is these messages which lead to eating disorders, low self-esteem and - ironically - obesity. Why are we comparing ourselves to other people? No matter how much weight you lose, you will NOT LOOK LIKE "THAT" GIRL! Accept who YOU are and be the healthiest YOU can be.

The more you want to lose weight, the more you think about food and in many cases the more you eat! I used to weigh nearly 180 pounds. I thought that if I lost weight, then I would be happy. Well I weighed 110 and I was no happier; I still felt like the "fat girl." I have realized that it was not my weight making me unhappy, but I became so enthralled with losing weight that I didn't see that. People need to work on whats making them unhappy because thats usually the reason they are overweight or underweight. Otherwise, it isn't rocket science- exercise and eat healthily. Of course, find what works for you and make it a part of your life. Enjoy it. It shouldn't control your life; it should enable you to live your life to the fullest. An unhappy person finds it hard to treat their body well, an unhappy person will not be happy with their figure no matter what size or shape they are.

Food is fuel to keep us alive. That is all we need it for. We should all stop obsessing about it in minute detail with absurd "do's and don't's" and accept it as a daily function.

How many of us have looked in a mirror, and said "GOD I'm fat!" ...and attempted to go on some dangerous diet scheme? Because we all know that these diets fail, not only do we usually not lose weight but they leave us disheartened that we cannot lose weight and we go back to stuffing are faces hoping that will block out the pain of are inadequacy. We need to believe that we DESERVE to be happy and  DESERVE to be healthy because unless you believe that you wont lose weight, and if you do you will still look in the mirror and see someone you cant stand. Stop aiming for perfection because it does not exist and as long as you do you will be forever unhappy.

Go out and enjoy your life, stop making diet plans and obsessing about food. Eat when your hungry. Accept yourself for who you are and find out what will make REALLY make you happy because then you will be truely beautiful.

Do you let food control your life in anyway? What are ways you can avoid food and diet controlling your life?

I just eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full. No calorie counting or anything like that, and I maintain a healthy weight. Works a charm.

  • oneeightyby04_2010@xanga

I stopped reading your posts after you seriously FUCKED up another girls post by editing what she had posted. Her intent with her post was COMPLETELY different than from what you made it out to be.
You took her post and completely warped it, making her seem like a bad guy when she's NOT. You're fucked up.

  • DaRkFaiRy314@xanga

@oneeightyby04_2010@xanga - who are you talking about? O_O im just confused.

  • mathematicalbagpiper@xanga

@DaRkFaiRy314@xanga - I think she's referring to "Reasons to be Skinny" that was originally "Reasons to Love Yourself" or something like that.

Since the birth of fastfood and simple carbohydrates we've become obese. If you take those out of the equation and add in foods that contain no more than 5 ingredients,if that many, plus activities such as walking or riding a bike instead of driving then this would be a fitt nation. Simple as that but with the constant commercials and adds of 'Great Deals' on cheap shitty food theres no wonder we're like this. I believe in the 'out of sight out of mind' method. I never want to eat until i see something on television talking about it. Its disgusting and i think we should boycot and shut these places down. I wouldnt mind living in a world free of pre packaged meals, greasy pizza,or fries. None of it holds nutritional value so why shove it down your throat? Its totally unfair that the healthier food is beyond expensive. Shows our country is working against us. Another reason to shout fuck you to the mann. Everyone knows how to eat right and excercise and they know that'll work in the long run but we're all looking for a quick fix. Thats why we fail and fail and fail and buy countless numbers of diet pills and drinks and whatever else 'diet' experts tell us will shrink our fat asses in 2hrs..Rant

@mathematicalbagpiper@xanga - Same here. Such a simple concept that people seem to miss.

"The more you want to lose weight, the more you think about food and in many cases the more you eat!"  I was just saying this to my boyfriend last night, it was funny to read it here today.  I really agree with a lot of what you said, I know not everyone who has weight/food issues has these same problems but I do think some people, like myself do.  It was nice to read this and for the moment not feel alone.  Thanks for sharing.

    "Eat when your hungry"

What if your hungry all the time?

  • piratexXxlove@xanga

Eat healthy, eat when you're hungry and eat a reasonable amount - it's not that complicated.

  • emwantsthin@xanga
    Awesome!

i have an eating disorder, and no matter how hard i try, i can't imagine thinking that i'm beautiful.

"eat when your hungry, stop when you're full" would work if all food tasted like cardboard.

I love to eat because eating is a very pleasurable, satisfying experience. I like to eat by myself so that I can enjoy the taste, texture, temperature, scent and sensation of fullness without feeling critisized or monitored. I love food. I love to go to the drive through and get one of each dollar menu item, then sit and savor each bite. I love to make favorite dishes when I know I will have a day to myself to leisurely devour without anybody asking "haven't you had enough?" or "are you eating more of that??".

I hate going out to dinner with friends or eating lunch with coworkers because I must remember to eat slowly and pretend to be satisfied with just one portion...not that I don't enjoy other people's company, but I'd rather join them for a movie or concert than to try to enjoy food while feeling scrutinized.

Eating just a small portion leaves me feeling annoyed and frustrated. I can't concentrate and become irritable or even rude. When I attend social events, I will often lie and say that I'm taking medicaiton or that I have medical tests scheduled and just drink tea until I can go home to eat privately. It's easier for me to delay eating for hours than to try and 'have just a little'.

I used to be skinny #size 2 to size 4# because I smoked cigarettes. Loved smoking, loved lighting up, inhaling the smoke, feeling it fill my mouth and lungs and warm me all over, loved blowing it out of my mouth, loved it loved it loved it. As a smoker, I barely noticed food.  Sometimes I didn't eat for a few days, not intentionally, but because cigarettes and black coffee killed my appetite and kept me feeling full and happy.

Once I quit smoking, food became my comfort, my relaxation, my satisfaction. I've gained 60 lbs since.

I do not drink any alcohol at all, nor do I touch any kind of recreational drug. I have figured that if I became this deepy addicted to cigarettes, and then food, I wouldn't tempt fate and expose myself to any drugs that could impact my family or employment.

I would love to be thin and pretty again, but until I find a replacement  for the joy, satisfaction, pleasure and relaxation that food brings, I will continue to be fat.

  • P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga

I think fat people eat food to comfort themselves and until they solve their underlying problem about why exactly they are unhappy, they'll continue to over-eat because food is temporarily making them happy. when I'm unhappy, I go shopping. different people cope with their problems in different ways. it isn't healthy or an ideal choice to have a food addiction or shopping addiction in my case, but taking control is easier said than done without intervention or support from family and friends, but sometimes it is ultimately up to the individual to find the willpower to take control of their lives. I'm not fat but thin, but I can sort of understand the need for comfort that one might seek for whether it be food or something else.

  • crystaldurden@xanga

    @P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga - I wish I could go shopping when I'm unhappy!!! I need money...lol.

  • xwhateverwheneverx@xanga

    @oneeightyby04_2010@xanga -

my post has nothing to do with reasons to be skinny post.... i misread the post. and i didn't actually think i was attacking her merely stating my opinion along with many others. god get off your high horse.it was hardly a malicious act.
    @crystaldurden@xanga - AGREED XD
  • xwhateverwheneverx@xanga

@suzy -  food is your drug. food is your alcohol. i agree completly with @P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga - ( someone understands what i was trying to say)  you need to find the underlying problem and fix that. not find another substance or harmful method to block it out.

    hope you feel better.

I've recently started fasting to add more control into my life, it's done wonders! (Check the blog.) I've only been doing it a few days though, and had to stop because of a family get together, but the control is already phenomenal.

Would I still feel such a sense of control if we as a society didn't have the obsession with food we do? That's a fascinating question. I'm going to think about that and blog about it if I discover an answer...

@sugar_mama@xanga - Something I've heard, and something that I've experimented with, is that a lot of people when they were younger never, for one reason or another, developed a way to tell if they were truly hungry. Sometimes it's because the parents would over feed the kids, but there can be a lot of other factors. It causes a lot of problems, because they think they're hungry even when they're not! I know I used to be there. It can be really really difficult to know when you're truly hungry, as weird as that seems, as oppose to just wanting to eat (not the same thing!!). I can't tell you how to fix it, because it's different for everyone, but unless a person isn't eating enough food I don't think anyone is ever actually 'always hungry.'

    I really like this post
  • PoetMcChick@xanga

As my boyfriend says, I "don't eat to live, I live to eat."

I either eat too much or not at all. There's no happy medium with me...

  • Suzywriter

For those who responded to my post, thank you.  Please understand that I wasn't asking for help.

I know that my relationship with food is politically incorrect. However, it works for me. I choose feeling good and enjoying food over seeking to 'fix' myself.  I liked being thin (with cigarettes and coffee). Having quit smoking, I now like eating.

My purpose was to point out that 'eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full' is good advice, but doesn't always apply.  I like eating for the sake of eating, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Again, thank you. I wish the best to all.

  • anemonix@xanga

I absolutely agree with this post =)

I mean, look at all the other countries in the world, most people out there are practically starving while we, here, in the U.S. are trying not to overeat? If Americans have trouble controlling their eating habits then we might as well just send our food out to other countries who actually need it. -_-
  • springtime_and_roses@xanga
  • mashroob@xanga

@anemonix@xanga - The reason they dont have food and water and such is because theres people preventing help from getting to the people. its not as simple as send over a truckload of food and end world hunger. Thats never going to end. Not this lifetime.

  • Riotgurl519@xanga

@sugar_mama@xanga - Then you eat smaller healthier snacks. It's better to have food that's healthy and full of nutrients (even low in fat and calories). Having at least 5 small meals a day is healthier then having 2 larger meals a day.

  • UnrevealedTruth_xo@xanga

@imperfect_still@xanga - 60+ hrs of fasting? That's food controlling your life, not the other way around.

  • imperfect_still@xanga

@UnrevealedTruth_xo@xanga - Not really, it's me controlling what I eat. It's all about perspective I guess.
