Can Avocados Cause Acne?
Over the summer I took a two week trip to Chile, a gift to myself for graduating from college. My cousin has lived in Chile for over two years now and I decided I better get down there and visit her before she and her husband move back to the States! Anyhow, while I was there my skin started to break out. This was strange considering that I had always had pretty clear skin. Even as a teenager going through puberty, my skin had always been clear, I had just been lucky I guess, up until this trip!
At first, I blamed my blemishes on the smog. Most of my trip was spent in Santiago, and unfortunately there is a pretty bad smog problem there. To show me the city and the smog, my cousin took me to San Cristobal. San Cristobal is a large hill where you can look down on the whole city, a must see for anyone who visits Santiago. It was amazing to see the city spread out before me but within an hour and a half the smog had rolled in and the city was barely visible. I have added some photos to give you an idea of just how bad the smog problem is.
Before the Smog Really Rolled In
An Hour and a Half Later
My skin continued to break out though even once I was back at home! I thought well, maybe my pores are just still clogged from all of the pollution but as months went by I realized that the smog might not by the culprit causing my pimples after all. I tried to figure out what else could be going on, what I had been consuming/doing before the trip that I was or was not doing now. And then it hit me! Avocados!
While in Chile I formed an addiction to Avocados. Once or twice a day I was munching on these little greenish/yellow fruits. Mash them up with some lemon, put it on some warm toast and ah…heaven. Well, my addiction didn’t end when I flew out of Chile, oh no, I was hooked, and I continued eating avocado almost every day. And almost everyday I had a new pimple.
In October I got a new job and my schedule changed and I just stopped eating so many avocados. Well, guess what? My skin has been clear since! I have heard mixed things about food causing acne, some people say it is not what you eat, and others swear that it is. I have never heard of avocados being linked to acne and I know how nutritious (as well as delicious!) they are so part of me doesn’t want to believe this but I feel like the proof is on my face.
So, I just wanted to ask, do you know if avocados can cause acne? Do you think food in general can do such a thing?

I don't think so.. Like you said, avocados are really nutritious. I have never heard of them causing acne. Who knows... maybe too much of anything is a bad thing right?
haha but i think the smog theory would've attributed to your breakouts somewhat. When i fly to China for vacation, my skin breaks out very bad and i get giant zits that I never get when I'm back in America.
I believe that it make sense. I think that very body is different and anything could cause issues to each unique individual.
I wouldn't care if they sent me into a coma each time I consumed them, I would still eat avocados up, goddamn. [/avocado love over]
I would actually attribute your acne more to the smog really. Pimples take a while to show, they don't pop up instantaneously. The irritants in the smog could have taken a while to calm down their effects. Who knows though?
Possibly... I think different foods have different affects on different people.
They're good for you, they're amazing, that's a silly question.
no it doesnt cause acne. it probably just caused your skin to create more oils.
Maybe you're allergic?
@ordinary_gir1@xanga - which causes acne...
@salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga - if you're in a coma.. how could you eat one?
Your body isn't used to the oil. I had the same problem when I ate octopus. @piratexXxlove@xanga - Actually, they are poisonous to some animals.
ye food alergies can cause pimples, so those lil red blemishes on your face prob werent acne spots. I get the same thing from instant noodles....ahhh college life :P
@mycontinuity@xanga - but not humans
It's possible, but I would do further research on it. Avocado is good for you, in moderation. On of them can contain around 500 calories!
@CrimsonxBallad@xanga - Shhhh! Don't use logic to question my irrational love of avocados.
@salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga - *pokes you with a stick of logic*
It's probably an allergy. Avocados are usually used to "prevent" acne, it is supposed to be very healthy for the skin because of it's fat and vitamins. But as all foods, it should be consumed within reason.
All foods are unhealthy in too large amounts-
i heard steak, pizza, chips, fried food causes acne. tho havent heard avocados doing the same but it very well can. my advice drink lots of warm water in the morning right when u wake up. i mean like 3 cups full at one time. then u can start ur day eating alll u want!!! :P
squeeze a bit of lemon in the water n i heard that further helps the cleansing process. :)
avocados have a lot of natural oils. it's possible that your skin just reacted poorly to the additional fatty acids in your diet. long-term, i don't know what the effects could have been/could be. try drinking more water and eating more fiber if you continue to eat them. might help :/?
Yeah certain foods will make you break out. I strongly believe that. I have sensitive skin and always have to be careful what i eat.
i believe "an avocado a day keeps your doctor away".
in other words, i'm really really obsessed with them.they've never made me break out.. but that's just me. i get maybe one pimple once a month if i'm unlucky. i also drink a ton of water, so maybe that's whats keeping my skin relatively clear..
i sure hope not! i just had some with delicious tacos! i dont really think that food cause pimples, but i agree with tyra banks philosophy on this subject. she says that you eat greasy food and it ends up on your hands, with in turn end up on your face.
ive always had pretty much acne-free skin too so maybe im biased. and i thought i heard of an avacado mask for your face!
i would still go to a doctor, see if he can prescribe anything! also, congrats on the job and graduation!
Great article. Personally, I've never noticed an increase in breakouts when I eat avocados. I'm going to pass along this info on my
blog.
Cheers,
Rebecca
Avocados can absolutely cause acne! The same thing happened to me....When I was living in South Florida I developed "adult acne". I was eating guacomole or raw avocado 2-3 per week. The blemished on my face, neck and chest never went away. I spent thousands of dollars over the years on facial products. I stopped eating avocado for a few months last Fall and noticed my skin slowly begin to improve.....We went to San Diego in November 2009 and I swear I ate avocado almost everyday. I spent the rest of the my vacation with large pimples/blemishes on my face and neck. They did not go away for up to one week. What I thought was adult acne turned out to be an allergic reaction (these blemishes were not white heads or black heads - they were red bumps and usually clustered in one area on my skin. As much as I love avocados I do not love breaking out....even concealer does not hide them. Same goes with products with avocado oil....very good for you, but if you have an allergy your skin reacts from the inside out......good luck!!
That's ridiculous. I eat a ridiculous amount of avocados and have never experienced blemishes or breakouts because of them. It was a change in location. Weather. The climate was different, therefore your skin reacted differently. I grew up in California and now live in Arizona, the weather in these two states in pretty much the same and my face has it's ups and downs. However when I visited Kentucky, were the humidity is different and all that good stuff, my face was clear! My pores were even less noticeable.
The same thing happened to me. I have always had clear skin and when I went to Cancun I got addicted to avocado.. I would put it on everything. I have never broken out so bad in my life. Since then I have stopped but on occasion I can't resist and I will have a little bit and instantly one or two days later I break out on my cheeks..
