Less People Workout During Cold Months?
According to Janet Buckworth, an exercise physiologist at Ohio State University, "college students lost cardiovascular fitness in winter but maintained their strength, indicating that while some of them did not want to go outside and run, at least they may have been going to the gym."
Why is that, you may ask?
Well, according to Dr. Buckworth, if you're not used to exercising, then you're definitely not used to exercising in bad conditions.
"If you are beyond the point that you are learning how to exercise, you can’t imagine not running in bad weather." She suggested that, instead of giving up on your workout all together, "find something you can do indoors, plan to exercise with a friend or do something — like update your playlist — that can make your workout more fun."
Dr. Buckworth also reinforces the idea of making exercise a habit and routine, instead of just viewing it as a hobby or activity - something to mark off your checklist of "to-do" items.

Around here the gyms fill up around the new year, I guess because everyone has a New Years resolution to work out more.
I don't work out less when it's cold, but I don't do much outside. I just go to the gym and swim or use the elliptical for cardio instead of hiking.
I stop running because. Here in canada it gets too cold to run. Your lungs freeze if your not careful/ some days you cant even prevent it. And seriously Ive done it before. Hurts like really really bad. Scared me for a long time of running plain and simple. I run now. But not in temps under -10 degrees and sometimes thats even risky.
@hedcandy@xanga - I'm Canadian too, started running last year and I never stopped because it was too cold. If it was cold I would grab my coldgear stuff or a hat but then I'm the kind of person who doesn't stop wearing shorts till -7 or -8. The only thing that will detract me from running is ice, it has got to be one of the worst things ever - already have bruised knees and hip but then there are always hurdles in the road so after a fall all you have do is pick yourself up and continue onwards.
I tend to do more yoga in the winter, but I still love running outside. There's something very satisfying (and wonderfully challenging!) about running through snow.
I'm usually running around buying gifts, sending gifts, and making gifts that I don't have enough time to work out, let alone eat 3 meals a day! Yesterday I was in the kitchen all day making candies and fudge, I didn't sit down a single time and it wasn't until dinner that i sat down, went for a 40 min. walk, and then passed out on my bed. @_@
are you kidding?! Winter break is the only time I have time to work out. Iceskating. trendmill. bike. elliptical. swimming and sauna! I am going all out this winter, need to lose it before spring semester. lol Otherwise it would be ba-ad.

Join a gym or rent workout DVDs. Definitely the only way to stay healthy during the winter months.
the guy in that picture's face is very red and showing signs of frostbite. maybe he should've also worn a pashmina scarf, hat and earmuffs.
I don't get to work out so much in the winter months b/c that's my busy season at work. I work for a funeral home. More people die in the cold weather months b/c they're not as active. Warmer weather months there are less deaths b/c people are more active. I'm not saying ALL people...mostly elderly or people who aren't that healthy. I don't know how it works, but that's just how it is in this business.
FEWER people work out, not less.
gyms :D
Sometimes when I run outside and it is cold my lungs and throat feel like they are on fire, is this normal? It makes running in the cold worse (for me)
