I was walking to class today. It was a sunny day, but the temperature reached to around mid 30s, and on top of that, it was extremely windy. Needless to say, it was cold, and I was freezing. I passed by a group of girls and one guy. The guy was just wearing a plain t-shirt and jeans, while carrying his jacket. One of the girls yelled at him saying that he needed to put his jacket on or he'll get sick.
I thought about it for a minute. "Put your jacket on or you'll get sick." I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say that.
Now I'm not an expert, but I could have sworn that the way people get sick is through germs. How do people get colds? I'm pretty sure someone got it from someone that is sick and not from the fact that someone decided they wouldn't wear their scarf today because it was 20 degrees outside.
It makes me wonder.
Can you really get sick just because it's cold outside?

You are right. Germs have to be present in order to get sick. The cold weather makes it seem worse because it lowers your body temperature and makes it easier for the "germs" to multiply. However, no germs no getting sick even if you go outside without you coat, hat, and gloves.
You can get hypothermia or frostbite from the cold, but the cold temperatures themselves can't make you sick. From what I understand, people get sicker in the winter because they're staying indoors a lot more and are less active, increasing their exposure to germs that everyone else is spreading around and not boosting their immune systems as much. Aside from that, your core temperature doesn't change that much aside from having a fever, and I guess the "cold making your immune system weaker" is just an old wives' tale.
another thing i heard is that colds seem more prevalent during colder weather because it means that more people are just staying inside and being around each other, allowing germs to spread more easily.
I read that you could have symptoms of illness from fluctuating weather (where I live, the weather has been pretty bipolar). For example, you could have a runny nose and/or a headache, but not have the flu. Rather, it is a way your body adjusts to the weather.
I wanted to take my daughter outside, when she was already sick, to get some fresh air. My other family members freaked out on me because of that. Apparently, you can't go outside when you're sick, becuase you'll get sicker, but you can stay inside with recirculated germy air and you'll get better! Makes a ton of sense, right?
I just ignore people, now. I'll go out without my coat, and I hardly ever get sick. They can then explain that to me, if they'd like.... It drives me crazy!!
Not possible. People only get more sick during cold months because the cold forces them inside, where they're constantly exposed to other sick people hacking germs into the air. It hurts to go out into cold if you're already displaying signs of a cold because the temperature only exacerbates the symptoms.
At the very most, cold temperatures will lower your body's defences, but germs have to be present in order for you to get sick.
no, but it weakens your immune system and allows opportunistic pathogens to get you sick.
Germs aren't spreading to your system, so you actually can't actually get a cold. But you can get hypothermia from cold weather. Also, I find that breathing in cold weather makes my chest ache and nose run sometimes.
The cold weakens your immune system making you more susceptible to catching a cold.
I would be the guy not wearing a jacket
cold weather does not make you sick, I live in Canada and throughout the winter I still run in my shorts and ocasionally head out in my shorts (too lazy to change + I hate pants) but I haven't actually been sick all winter - my friends are the people who stay indoors but they have been the ones that have been sick, not me
i always suffer from bad cold like that, take care of yourself

I read that cold and flu viruses thrive in dry weather, which it tends to be when it's cold. Yeah, you get sick from the germs though.
Colds and flus increase in the winter months because we huddle inside in bigger crowds more often to avoid being outside...this leads to closer proximity of germs..

YES.
This is coupled together with the fact that virus life-span outside of the body in longer in cold temperatures, compared to hot temperatures.
