  • Potential Healthy Eating Obstacle: Family

    This post was inspired by Healthkicker reader, Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga, who commented on the post "I Love You, but You're Making Me Fat." The post was about how being in a relationship, especially when living with your significant other, can sometimes cause your eating habits to get a little out of whack depending on how the other person eats.  This reader brought up a good point about how this can be the case not only with a significant other (or friends, I'd like to add), but with perhaps another very important aspect of your personal life: family.

    When my Mom was little, she was always given an apple as her snack with lunch as opposed to the Twinkies and Devil Dogs that the other kids were getting.  While obviously an apple was healthier for her, she felt left out not being able to have treats like everyone else.  So she promised herself that when she had her own house one day that she would have whatever foods she wanted in it--and boy did she hold up to that promise.

    Having gone through binge eating disorder within the last few years, I can tell you that this has certainly been an issue for me at times.  My loving Italian mother has always enjoyed nurturing herself, myself, and the whole family with food (oh, hi eating disorder--lol.  I certainly don't blame her entirely, but the whole food=comfort thing obviously couldn't have helped).  Even though she got rid of a lot of the junk food around the house when she and my dad decided they wanted to lose a few pounds, the meals she cooked for dinner were sometimes heavy or cooked in a way that made them unhealthy (ie: brown rice and noodles made with butter or white pasta instead of whole wheat).  She wanted to help me get better, but she would get frustrated when I would make myself something different for dinner than what she would be serving.  This hasn't been as much of a problem since I began college four years ago and have had my own apartment, but I completely remember how much of a struggle this was for us in high school, especially because at that time I had not yet realized that I had an actual eating disorder.

    As my disorder begins to slip away, it's gotten easier to enjoy small portions of the yummy foods my Mom makes without going crazy, and keeping the rest of my meal healthy.  She buys all the good-for-you stuff I ask for, which I sincerely appreciate.  I still make her hide some of her junk food from me though so I don't go searching for it in the middle of the night! Lol.

    How about you all?  Do your family's eating habits affect your own? 

    For those who no longer live with their family and/or don't see them frequently, how do you eat during family get togethers?  Do you feel obligated to eat your relatives' food, even if it's dreadfully unhealthy?  Or do you not worry about it, like me, and let yourself splurge a little since it's an occasion?

    I grew up in a you will clean your plate and get your moneys worth out of a buffet or value meal when you can. Not wanting seconds was an insult.


    Since moving out I discovered things called portion size.

    Oh, man.. My mom grew up poor, and survived on butter and bread.. got kicked out.. lived with her friends eating school lunch as leftovers for dinner.. She was chunky like me.. a little worse, but practically the same.. Except now that she's no longer poor, has a husband who earns middle waged income..


    she makes dinner. She's a good cook. She'll make anything full of sodium, carbs, fats.. RICE is something we live off of almost daily..


    I'm still struggling to resist her food. She tries to eat healthy (though she doesn't really know how to.. she just diets.. she might even have a disorder. she thinks she's fat..), and exercises.. but she'll make unhealthy things if that's what my brothers want. Hamburgers? Okay. Steak? Okay. And my dad likes everything salted.. so she makes stuff to go with rice that's salty.


    She gets mad whenever my dad makes her take me grocery shopping for my own choices of foods.. You know, whole foods like fruits, veggies, nuts.. She thinks I'm spoiled rotten for that. I'm here, trying to eat healthy, but she thinks it's a waste of money.. Yikes. And she thinks that if I don't get excellent grades, I don't deserve to buy healthy foods. I suppose that if I do poorly in one area, I must do poorly in the other. Thank god I have a supportive father. <3

    I feel you completely on this one!


    I don't eat red meat and I try to eat as healthy as possible (especially since I started college) but my parents insist that I don't eat enough (to their standards). So when I dropped down to 105 they freaked out and MADE me eat more more more. Ugh... it's hard to find a balance with them. especially when you live in a family that has a "waste not want not" mentality. it isn't a bad mentality to have... I mean you have to think of poor starving people. but at the same time, it's very destructive to the body and I have unfortunately suffered consequences of the cycles of eating too much and too little.


    I have to remind myself that there will always be food for later... I can eat it tomorrow for lunch. It will still be there. I also tell my parents very firmly: I am full. I do not want anymore. Thank you. Lastly, I hint to my mother that I would prefer it be made without butter or without seasoning, etc. It's also helpful to go grocery shopping and sneak in healthy stuff and remove the junk.

    my mom is the exact same way!! she'll buy junk food & then the next week she'll throw it all out. but she cooks unhealthy/heavy meals (oil, butter, white pasta & bread, etc...)
    when i opt to make my own meal she gets soo mad. its so hard losing weight with the dinners she cooks & junk food she buys .............  i can't wait for college, no freshmen 15 for me. hahah

    It's definitely gotten much easier since being at school; I'm able to buy my own snacks, and I don't buy the bad-for-you things that my sisters enjoy (granted, they're in sports for over about 20 hours a week, so they deserve the treats :P) - and my mom is horrible. She'll make an amazingly healthy dinner one night like, grilled chicken with brown rice, asparagus and some fruit. The next night? Cheeseburgers, cheesey potatoes and a salad. Really mom? 


    I love my family's cooking and I used to eat too much of it. Now I just do portion control when I eat at home that way, I can still enjoy it without overeating.

    My mom buys junk food and has no idea how to actually cook a meal - normally she'll just cook pasta or roasted potatoes and that's it one carb for you meal. Its ridiculous. For example, last night she cooked a box of Rice Roni

    Also, money is a big factor on eating healthy. Lot of familys where the parents work and don't have a lot of time and money buy unhealthy food, quick food.

    idk... it's really hard to eat healthy, my dad is obese and always buys unhealthy stuff, and my mom doesnt know how to eat healthy
    and as a consiquence i dont either... V__________________________V I try 
    but i am PICKY 
    and its hard to get "normal"/kosher food at school... so it usually comes down to wilted/discusting looking salad or rice
    im seriously getting vitemins from vitemin drinks and my calcuim for quesedillas
    its sooo sad cuz i love to cook but cant

    I definitely eat better and have more self control when I'm away at school than when I'm at home. Even more intensive for me to move out right away once I graduate in May.

    i dunno guys, mums have it hard. in addition to cooking meals,

    what else do they have to do around the house, in their own lives, for your benefits? *think*

    plus, sometimes you might just wanna opt for something that's not a hassle to prepare cus you've got other things to do (hence the cheeseburgers and whatnot).

    i'm not saying that you may not help out in the kitchen however, it's always nice to get input and some help. 'Hey mum, let's have this tonight. My friend recommended this recipe and I've tried it. Delicioso!' or 'Did you know you can eat this THAT way? *let mum taste and discover the deliciousness*'

    And then everyone's happy.
    (both parties would be on their way to happy healthy living, lol :)

    my family is italian too - so there's a LOT of pasta, sausage, sauces, and CHEESE involved in things we eat.  i just try to watch portion sizes but at large family get togethers (especially), it would be insulting to not eat and enjoy your food.
