  • I'm So Healthy, but I Can't Seem to Lose Weight!

I would consider myself a pretty healthy person. I'm a vegetarian, I avoid fast-food and processed food, I check the labels to make sure I'm not eating things with too much sodium, etc, I eat small portions. I take my vitamins, I eat plenty of fiber... I seem to be doing everything right! I do splurge sometimes and sometimes when I try to not eat, I give in and end up eating a small bit of something, but than I end up wanting to eat smaller meals after that.

I just don't get it though! I excerise every other day and I do about 30 minutes of cardio, and 15 of weights, and sometimes ill go home and do an excerise video at home. I do tend to stress kind of a lot though, and I read that contributes to belly-fat, but I'm not sure if it's because of that.

So my question is, what am I doing wrong?

I want to be leaner and longer, so I've stopped running as much and have been trying to cut down on weights, but I'm still not losing the weight.

Any one have any ideas on what to do?

You really are doing everything right.

Maybe for a few days try counting your calories in and out, to make sure you're at a level to lose weight.
Try switching up your routine, sometimes your body can get too used to having more than one exercise all the time.

Talk to your doctor if you don't see any results with anything you try. Also understand that some people are just genetically destined to weigh a little more than others.

Oh man, i'd love to get some feed back on this too.

    I've got the same issue.

I have news for you: you're not losing weight because you don't need to.

Your body is already happy and healthy the way it is, I would stop trying to fight it and let it do it's thing!

I'm on the same page - I eat pretty healthy and exercise a lot, but I would rather be 10-15 pounds lighter.  But honestly, I'm within a healthy weight, and I have good stamina.

And I love baking and good food too much to seriously lose weight.  I think people like us need to learn to be satisfied with our weight and love the benefits of being healthy!

same... i started running everyday but the weight won't budge. i didn't run for a week but it's not like i gained any weight... there was no difference.

maybe i don't need to lose weight, but i had been lighter in the past without all the exercising.. i just want to get rid of the few winter pounds! grrr!
  • JoeytheGenie@xanga

@lesprit__descalier@xanga - running might not help you lose weight, when I started to run everyone on my xc team lost 3-5lb while I gained weight. running might give you more muscle, muscle weighs more than fat

This could be your body's way of saying it's fine at the weight it is. There's the idea of a set point when it comes to weight, the ideal range for your body. Really, there's nothing wrong with having a little extra weight if that's the way your body is supposed to be. You're clearly healthy based on your dietary and exercise habits. Don't overexert yourself and just be chill about this. A lower weight does not equal a healthier you.

try pilates and yoga and do 30 mins of cardio 5 times a week
yoga and pilates are meant to make you leaner and longer and prevent you from bulking up
Also, doing weight training with light weights for a lot of reps makes you leaner as well.

I would adjust what you eat by day.  Are you eating the same types of foods every day? What are you eating specifically during the day/at night? It may not be what you consume but when and how you consume it.  If you're not giving your body enough time to digest your food before retiring for the night, this might be the problem.  Also, I have heard that too much sugar (even in fruit) in the AM is bad (I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant the first time, and this is what my nutritionist told me).  I would try varying what you eat from day to day (wasn't there a post about that on here somewhere? Eating 1100 calories one day, 1300 another, etc.?).  Good luck and see if you could talk to a nutritionist about this and figure something out!

I doubt your body needs to lose weight then - you're probably at your set weight that your body needs to be at to function.

  • fallingorflyingg@xanga

Like everyone else said your body could just be at the weight it needs to be.
Also you might be losing fat and replacing it with muscle.
This has happened to me. My weight would stay about the same, but according to my body fat percent I'd lost 3-4 pounds of fat.
    So it could be that.

you've either reached a plateau, or you've reached your natural healthy weight.

there's also a small chance it could be a thyroid problem, but that's pretty rare. all you need is a blood test. i think its easily treated with medication too.

  • irishluck20@xanga

Switch up your routine. If that doesn't work, you're body is definitely at a healthy weight!

  • Mile_High_Legs@xanga

Eat even smaller portions, so cardio/walk/run for at least one hour as that is when your body starts to really work, and do yoga for long and lean.

Note to the Editor: You should be fired. Did you even read over this? EDIT!
  • superGchik@xanga

i don't know either.  i'm pretty healthy when it comes to eating, though i'm not a vegetarian, and i work out but i can't seem to lose weight either.  i would lose a little then plateau later.

  • cutesycharm@xanga

Sounds like you really need to up it. Doing the same exercises at the same intensity will get you nowhere. Start incorporating intense exercise twice a week, an hour of good sweaty cardio usually does the trick to up the burn. Your body simply thinks what you are doing is normal!

  • SoHoian_NightOwl@xanga

that's bc its harder to lose muscle mass in comparison to fat

  • SoHoian_NightOwl@xanga

if u want to lose weight, don't exercise as much and cut down ur calorie intake without missing out on the nutrients

  • Snuffybear@xanga

Running creates muscle mass, though it does burn fat.  Doing pilates or yoga (rather than always running) once in a while helps vary the muscles you work.  And rather than lifting weights, use a stretch band for arm strength exercises to develop muscles that make arms look toned without bulk.  It also never hurts to do a daily ab routine.

I have the same eating habits as you, although I workout more.  I primarily run, cycle, do yoga and lift weights.  I love to play tennis, go hiking, and swim laps in the summer.  I, too, can't seem to lose any more weight.  I dropped 90 pounds about 4 years ago, and I assume this is just where my body is meant to be now.  If I got a tummy tuck to remove the excess skin on my abdomen and some of the excess on my arms, I could probably get down to 125-130 lbs.  As it is now, I go between 135 in the winter when I don't exercise quite as much to about 140 when I'm training for a race.  I've been wearing a size 6 for a long time now, and I wish I could get down to a size 4.

I continue to get more and more toned as time goes by, but I would have to significantly cut my calories if I wanted to try to lose weight.  That'd be incredibly difficult for me, though, considering how active I am and how I have panic attacks when I get too hungry for too long (a result of being homeless and starving many years ago).

I happened to look beyond the post and notice on your "about me" section that alcohol was listed as one of your interests.  I don't know how much you consume on a weekly basis, but alcohol is absolutely loaded with empty calories.  I should know, I'm a recovering alcoholic, and I gained a hundred pounds in a year, just from all the excess calories in the alcohol.  I'm not insinuating that you have a problem in any way, I'm not one of those crazy "no one should drink because I can't" people by any means, I'm just saying to take a look not only at your eating habits, but your drinking habits, as well.  If you do wanna drink, be sure to stick with mixed drinks made with 100% fruit juice and a small amount of liquor.  Fizzy drinks cause bloat, and that applies to pop as well as champagne and beer.  Also, do you get munchies when you smoke?  When I used to smoke a lot, my munchies always ruined whatever good food choices I made that day, because I'd just grab whatever unhealthy thing was laying around, chips or...you know...loaves of garlic bread dipped in ranch dressing, or just whatever was there.  Be sure to take all that kind of stuff into account, too, your body isn't exempt from gaining weight when you're partying.

Figure out your maintenance caloric level. Figure out how many calories you eat a day. When calories expended is greater than calories taken in, you will lose weight. It's a pretty tedious task, but if you are serious about losing weight, you'll do it. AND if that doesn't really work in about a month, I suggest seeing a doctor.

  • xlostinthecityx@xanga

i have silmilar problem but i eat chocolate so maybe that explains????!!!

  • yokyokgetsfussy@xanga

try not to swing back and forth between little and a lot. just do regular meals and maintain what you are doing. our bodies do like to stay at a certain weight, but lock someone in a room with no food and they will lose it. trouble is it comes back with added weight later.
if the calorie counting doesn't work (and even lap banding only lets you lose 25% of excess body weight - ie 100 kg person who should be ideal body weight of 60 is only going to lose 10 kg) try a doctor, check out thyroid function, PCOS etc
