Over the years of being vegetarian on and off and now converting to being vegan, I've lost my taste for cows milk.
Other than the occasional pig out on some sweet unhealthy cereal, I hardly have it anymore. Before my Oreo extravaganza this past weekend, where I had literally two sips of milk before I cast the cup aside, I hadn't had cows milk in probably six months.
These days I much prefer soy milk to cows. It got me thinking about how, when I first went vegetarian and first tried soy milk, I hated it. But I continued to try it, it grew on me, and now I sometimes catch myself standing in the fridge light drinking it out of the carton.
Luckily my mom buys them in bulk so I usually open one for myself.
Recently, I began trying other kinds of non dairy milk. First I tried rice milk, Rice Dream brand to be exact. I really like the taste, but texture is a bit like skim milk. As a cows milk drinker, I always favored whole, or at least 2%.
About a week ago, my mom bought a carton of almond milk, Almond Breeze brand to be exact. It was love at first sip. I really enjoyed the nutty flavor and the consistency is thick and creamy like whole milk. The creme de la creme of this diary alternative, only 40 calories in one cup.
My mom on the other hand was not a fan. I think it's because it was unsweetened. But I'm happy that since I like the unsweetened version, it should mean I'll really like the sweetened/flavored version.
My mom says she'd like to try the almond milk when we make smoothies. We usually use soy milk, but the flavor of the soy milk often overtakes the taste of the smoothie. With the almond milk, we'd probably be able to taste more of the fruit.
I personally would like to try it with everything! My unhealthy cereals and healthy cereals, my smoothies, and anything else I use milk with. I didn't think about it at the time, but I should probably try it with my Oreos too.
Have you tried any non-dairy milks? How do you like them? Do you prefer them to cows milk? What's your favorite non-dairy milk?

Almond Breeze unsweetened vanillaaaa <3
I haven't tried rice milk or hemp milk yet. I guess I like sticking with my tried and true favorite. Also the 40 calorie thing is a clincher for me.
I drink Almond Milk, tried Rice Milk once but didn't like it very much. I used to drink Soy Milk.. no more soy for me. I don't drink regular milk because it makes me sick.
ALMOND MILK IS MY FAVORITE<3 i would also like to try hemp milk at some point.
@fauxSHOyo@xanga - that's my favorite too! it tastes just like milk to me.
Soy milk is still my favorite. I like Silk the best. I agree with you on the rice milk, it is a little too watery for my liking. Hemp milk has a very grassy taste so I didn't really care for it.
I've tried most of them, and forced them on my children because of their allergies. The elder sticks with organic cow's milk, and the younger prefers fruit juice over any kind of milk. While I enjoy rice milk, I drink almost none.
I've actually switched to drinking soy milk instead of cow milk. I have to say, I fart a lot less!
I recently converted to Almond Breeze, its delish in my cereal! :)
Hmm almond milk...I'll look out for that. Thanks!
Oh yes, try the sweetened one! I get almond milk for my cereal and such. Blue Diamond is a pretty tasty brand. The unsweetened stuff is good, but my husband, like your mom, doesn't like it. Sweetened should suit both of you! (The unsweetened is still good for recipes where it's weird if the milk used is sweet.)
Organic Silk is my favorite. I never liked cow's milk, not even when I was a kid. Rice Dream was okay, but it didn't really have anywhere near the nutritional value that Silk has. I haven't tried almond or hemp milk, but I would like to.
I went non-dairy for a little while for my headaches, and soy milk tastes fine, but I really only drink milk in my cereal and soy milk almost always has this slight vanilla taste to it, so my cereal would always taste slightly different and I couldn't stand it! My boyfriend, who drinks probably half a gallon of regular milk a day, absolutely loves soy chocolate milk.
I drink Silk. I think soy milk is the best because unlike other substitutes it has amazing nutritional value.
I drink Silk. The plain for anything like cereal/smoothies/etc, and I used to drink a lot of chocolate milk so I drink Chocolate Silk now, but I always pour it over ice. (Like a frappe or something) ;)
I love all non-animal based milks. Well, mostly!
i never drink straight milk anymore. i lost my taste for cows milk too since i became lactose intolerant. i used to love it but after not having it for so long it tastes strange. i will have it in my coffee though, if i take a dairy ease pill with it. for cereal i use rice milk, just because now i'm used to that taste more than the taste of actual cow's milk. soy milk is too thick for me
Wow, sounds delicious. I'll have to search in the grocery store for some. How about trying to see what blend of almond, soy, water is really good.
i really want to get some almond milk, actually. i haven't had it yet, but i've been craving it recently. haha.
I absolutely love Almond Breeze! Great with cereal - or by itself! The thought of drinking cow's milk is now sooo distasteful to me --- Live and learn & have a healthy appetite!
I LOVE ALMOND BREEZE.
rice dream is also full of win. and silk soymilk takes 3rd place.
cow's milk is disgusting. i'm so glad there are other options nowadays.
Hemp milk has a very unique taste to it, not like anything I tried before. But it is pricey so I don't really buy it. For soy milk I usually stick with silk, it doesn't taste too beany. But mostly I drink almond milk. Rice milk is like a cross b/t soy and almond
i love almond milk!!! almond breeze is the BEST, who can argue - it tastes better and it's lower calories
I drink unsweetened soymilk with my coffee...it's really lovely. <3
I haven't had cow's milk since I was little, and I've tried all the ones out there. So Delicious Coconut Milk beverages are the best, especially the vanilla flavor. Great with cereal, in smoothies, and for making a wicked chocolate milk!
I have never drank milk straight - dairy or non-dairy - but love almond milk in smoothies. It adds an excellent flavor and nice creaminess. For recipes, I turn to coconut milk beverage. It is a bit richer and works in both sweet and savory (unsweetened version) dishes without being too conutty.
