  • The Dreaded Winter Cold

My body is nothing if not consistent. Last January I got a bad head cold, and I have acquired one once again this weekend. At least this time I'm curled up on my couch and relaxing away from the cold and snow in New York. Last winter I was sick while traveling through Rome and Naples. Not an ideal vacation, that's for sure.

I always forget just how crappy it feels to be sick. I haven't had the flu since I was a young kid, so I can only imagine if I catch the flu in my older-age, I'd be a miserable wreck. (I don't believe in the need for a flu shot though, so we'll see what happens.) I just hang out with my tissues and occasionally mope when my congested head gets to me.

I'm drinking liquids, making tea, eating comfort foods and resting up. I try to avoid taking cold medicine unless I feel really, really, terrible. I'm a reformed abuser of OTC medications, Ibuprofen especially, so these days I shy away from anything unless it's necessary. What's interesting is the expiration dates on cold medicine. Since, thankfully, I don't get sick that often, I'm always checking and chucking stuff in my medicine box as it expires. I found out I still have some of the cold medicine I bought in Italy, and it doesn't expire until 2014. However, the DayQuil I bought sometime last year expires this fall. Anyone have thoughts on why that is?

Anyway, these are the ramblings of a stuffy-nosed, couch-bound, foggy headed person.

How do you handle colds? Do you power through them or depend on medication to get you through? Any tricks or treatments you rely on?
