The Dreaded Winter Cold

My body is nothing if not consistent. Last January I got a bad head cold, and I have acquired one once again this weekend. At least this time I'm curled up on my couch and relaxing away from the cold and snow in New York. Last winter I was sick while traveling through Rome and Naples. Not an ideal vacation, that's for sure.I always forget just how crappy it feels to be sick. I haven't had the flu since I was a young kid, so I can only imagine if I catch the flu in my older-age, I'd be a miserable wreck. (I don't believe in the need for a flu shot though, so we'll see what happens.) I just hang out with my tissues and occasionally mope when my congested head gets to me.
I'm drinking liquids, making tea, eating comfort foods and resting up. I try to avoid taking cold medicine unless I feel really, really, terrible. I'm a reformed abuser of OTC medications, Ibuprofen especially, so these days I shy away from anything unless it's necessary. What's interesting is the expiration dates on cold medicine. Since, thankfully, I don't get sick that often, I'm always checking and chucking stuff in my medicine box as it expires. I found out I still have some of the cold medicine I bought in Italy, and it doesn't expire until 2014. However, the DayQuil I bought sometime last year expires this fall. Anyone have thoughts on why that is?
Anyway, these are the ramblings of a stuffy-nosed, couch-bound, foggy headed person.
How do you handle colds? Do you power through them or depend on medication to get you through? Any tricks or treatments you rely on?

As soon as I start feeling sick, I start drinking ginger tea. If things get really bad, I tend to hole myself up in my apartment and just sleep, drink more ginger tea, and eat lugaw with extra ginger. I don't like to take any medication unless I've been sick over a week.
I haven't been sick for the past 3 years and a half to 4 years. *knock on wood*. The last time I got sick was a few days after I received a flu shot! How ironic. Anyways...I heard that drinking EmergenC can aid in a quicker recovery. Feel better!
currently suffering -__- can't find a cure yet.
@laurenmaureen@xanga - same here. It's miserable.
