Zero Calores but Cancer Causing?! The Deal with Artificial Sweetners
I had checked the "I would like info relating to diabetes" box when I signed up for Sparkpeople, a nutrition and eating habits tracking website. A few minutes ago I received an email from Sparkpeople with an update on artificial sweeteners. They stated despite being FDA-approved, artificial sweeteners have been linked with head aches, mood swings and even multiple behavioral disorders.
But it's so hard to ignore the fact that they give you the sweetness you crave so dearly without the disadvantage of calories and have little glycemic response!
What do you think of sweeteners? Is it worth the potential effects on your body?

"despite being FDA-approved"
lol.
you do realize that all of the Nutritional Supplements have never been approved by the FDA right. FDA never approves anything that's actually good. In fact I heard they're working to outlaw Vitamin B injections..

Truthfully, you're more likely to get cancer from microwaving your lunch every day then from artificial sweeteners. You're exposed to millions of carcinogens every day - polluted air, pesticides in food, radiation from the computer, the TV, the phone, etc.. every time you get a paper cut is an opportunity for your cells to mutate. The truth is, sugar tastes better, but artificial sweeteners don't have calories. They do have proven effects on energy levels and mood but those effects go away within three days after you stop using the sweetener (the time it takes your body to completely eliminate a toxin).
Oh, and if you look through the documents the FDA released regarding artificial sweeteners, you'll find that they ARE, in fact, approved. Not that it means a thing anymore, considering the policies the FDA employs.
Idk I use Stevia
@boilingicicle@xanga - That's big Pharma that wants them outlawed. So they can call it a drug and sell it to you 20 times the price
@path_2_happiness@xanga - Thanks for the correction/clarification.
They taste funky and even cause stomachaches, too. They should be used sparingly, just like sugar.
@boilingicicle@xanga - np. And I think its good nutritional supplements aren't approved by the FDA because so many things passed by them are lobbied and allot aren't even good for you. So I never trust their word. For example, Stevia has been used by athletes and even the elderly for more energy but is less of a stimulant then caffeine.The FDA was trying to ban Stevia calling it a dangerous stimulant, that it was bad for your heart and shouldn't be on the market as a sweetener. Guess who was behind that joke? Artificial sweetener companies. If they did evaluate vitamins and nutritional supplements they would very likely be rejected and labeled in-effective or does not work as implied because they were lobbied to say so.
Sorry for the rant.
I love Stevia! It's the perfect sweetness for me. I hate the sweetness of high fructose, and sugary drinks don't taste right since I started drinking mainly water. I haven't had Stevia in food yet, but I would like to try some soon.
Stevia > cancer, but just about anything and everything causes something now. Leave it to us highly evolved humans to kill ourselves off.
STEVIA!!! :D
There may be toxins all around us, but why knowingly put even more into your body? I avoid artificial sweeteners. I avoid artificial/genetically altered/overprocessed anything if I can. Our bodies weren't designed for those. Man messes nature up. Stevia, agave, even honey and raw sugar are much better for you than anything man-made. And yes, big companies are trying to make us sicker...there's a lot of money in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, so naturally they'll procted their interests even if it means destroying ours.
@path_2_happiness@xanga - TRUTH. Big Pharma is about the most criminal industry ever.
Artificial sweetners are bad news. Too bad I haven't kicked the diet coke habit yet. It's good tasting stuff.
@HurricaneAlla@xanga - yes.. i know they are approved.... i think you misread or misunderstood LOL.. but thanks! its good to know the potential side affects wear off after leaving your system :)
the only thing i noticed when i drink a lot of artificially sweetened stuff or use a lot of sweetener is that i crave more food and in particular sugary foods.. idk but i stopped using them cause of that :/
I don't see the big deal (anymore) of using just regular sugar over "artificial" stuff. I used to count calories like a mad woman so 15 or so seemed like a huge deal, but I've stopped. The only thing I used artificial sweeteners for was tea or coffee. A teaspoon of actual sugar can't hurt. And no one should ever use artificial sugar in baking and pastry (especially for cakes, cookies, etc.)... just don't -_- it's ridiculous.
And the lethal dose of caffeine is 1 teaspoon or about 80 cups of coffee. You know how much aspartame they had to inject into those lab rats to give them cancer?
Calories* Edit your title please.
I always use Apriva in my daily coffee. =(
.... I actually have nothing against natural sugar (except that it takes a lot more to sweeten my cup of coffee than 1 packet of Apriva) but there's also this really complicated circumstance in which my mother hides the jar of sugar from my bro or he would eat it all...!
I know artificial sweeteners can cause you to be more hungry/crave more food & you can even become addicted to them... but I haven't noticed much craving increase, nor am I addicted. I'm also not using them every day, but still. I'll take my chances since anything & everything apparently can now cause cancer.
And like someone said above me, it takes one pack of Sweet & Low to do what two to three packs of sugar would do.
I prefer real sugar. Why? It can be controlled by me by me choosing how much I intake, whether by food or beverage, and I can equal it out by exercise and such. The only real negative affect, to most people, would seem to be the caloric content. But I don't see it as being enough content to worry with.
I don't use artificial sweetners. Why? Because they're linked to health issues OUT of my control. So, I prefer to "man-up" (even though I'm a woman ;) ) and just make wise choices and control how much I put in and how much I exercise out, so to speak. :) I can always control that. I can't control what artificial sweetners are linked to. So, yeah. I'm fine in control. :)
@Hinase - I can't :( sorry..
@akarui_mitsukai@xanga - good points that you made :) thanks for sharing.
but sugar is related to diabetes.. and as many of the people mentioned above.. if everything gives your cancer such as microwaves and you use sweeteners sparingly is it then "out of control"? when you use it?
i must admit I go half and half when cooking.
I just take sugar, or honey in my coffee/tea. Avoid excess.
I'm fine and my health is fine.
