Are HOT DOGS as Toxic as Cigarettes?!

Have you guys seen this billboard? It suggests that hot dogs pack the same health toxicity as cigarettes.
Apparently, research has linked daily consumption of processed meats (this includes hot dogs, pepperoni, and deli lunch meats) to a 21% increase in some types of cancer. Most experts blame preservative (nitrites/nitrates) as the cause.
Critics have come up against the billboard, saying it's too harsh. However, as an American summer food of choice, maybe it is a good idea to raise awareness.
I, for one, had no idea what a health risk packaged meats posed! I had never heard this about hot dogs. I always thought of them as undesirable because of the meats they used, but certainly not deadly.
What do you guys think of this awareness campaign? Did you know about the risk of hot dogs? Do you substitute for other types of food when summer grilling?

dude the last thing i need is to be paranoid about my protein too. in this day and age where cheaper wins over better quality our bodies are barraged by totally inhuman, unnatural things. what things should be avoided and which should be indulged i can't say. it's upsetting though. i mean, i smoke (desperately trying to quit) but i also used to have really really bad paranoia over the healthiness of my food. like, to the unhealthy extreme. i wouldn't eat anything cause i thought it was all bad for me. i would spend 3-4 hours in the grocery store trying to find the healthiest wholesomest food. -smh- the only thing i can really do with this information is ignore it or i won't be able to eat anything ever.
NOOOOOOO!!!! :(
hot dogs are a good source of protein! It's easy and it tastes pretty good.
I guess I'll eat them in moderation and not too often then.
B-b-but...I love hotdogs -huge, glassy eyes and trembling lip-
They're soo easy to make and I only eat one kind and omfg. That's so upsetting. SO UPSETTING.
I've always known hot dogs and lunch meat aren't really good for you, but like most things, it's about moderation. This study is for people who eat it EVERYDAY. That is a LOT! I would suggest that someone who is eating everyday needs to introduce their palate to some other foods. But I eat hot dogs about twice a week, and lunch meat maybe a few times a month so... it's not a big deal.
Also? I'm pretty sure kosher dogs, while a bit more expensive, don't have nitrates/nitrites.
@MsButterworth311@xanga - I agree that eating it often would be a problem. Like you said, though, those same ingredients appear in lunch meat. I have to wonder how many kids have a sandwich packed for them 5 days a week?
I buy the Hebrew National 97% fat free hot dogs. No nitrates, low fat, all kosher. :)
Yes. Once again, I though we knew that everything is going to kill you. We need to stop eating to prevent ourselves from dying!
1- Can I see proof that hot dogs are AS TOXIC as CIGARETTES? I understand that the idea here is that hot dogs are unhealthy, but I would like to see proof that they are as unhealthy as cigarettes. Exaggerating is a bad quality.
2. I love hot dogs. People used to tell me as a kid "oh that's just the feet, nose, and yucky remains of the pig - don't eat it!" And I ate it anyway. LOVE ME SOME HOT DOGS.

Well, processed food isn't really good for you. I'm not sure if I'd be inclined to believe it's as bad as cigarettes, but anything can happen.
