I know that all of our bodies work on different diets and routines, but I believe that the majority of us do try to avoid the dreaded carb. Honesty is the best policy here, especially when it comes to health, so let me come clean first. My knowledge of carb-laden foods is pretty much limited to pasta or bread and when I found out about these others, I wanted to share!
This is not a post telling you to avoid carbs, because I love my wheat bread, but here are a few food items that have carbs (that I didn't even know about)!
Cola: Soda can contain a lot of carbs, which your body then processes into sugar. It has been recommended to drink sparkling water instead! My step-grandpa recently began decreasing his sugar intake massively since his recent diagnosis of diabetes. Couldn't believe it when carbs showed up on Diet Pepsi--but I guess I've also never checked the label, as I'm not a big soda drinker.
Jelly Beans: I'm not a big candy fiend, but I do love jelly beans! When I was a kid I overloaded on those Harry Potter every flavor beans way too much.
Apples: They contain about 17-22 grams of carbs. My favorite types are Golden or Honeycrisp.
I know that it would be hard to go no carb--and that is also nothing I'd ever do but I find this to be an interesting topic. To those with a nutrition or health background, feel free to educate me on carbs!
What are some foods that you didn't know had carbs?

His diagnosis of "sugar?" I'm going to assume you mean diabetes.
And PS, carbs are not bad. Most people just tend to eat more than they need. Go read: http://www.brianmac.co.uk/nutrit.htm
No, I pretty much have it down. Fruit, veg, grains, and crap (candy/sugar). I'm not against carbs, only processed grains and refined sugars. Fruit, veg, and whole grains are welcome.
Also, you mean diabetes, right?
As with most things diet related it's the excess or the shortage of what we need that causes us problems not the carbs
I don't try to avoid carbs. I try to avoid junk food and over-intake of calories. I think there is no point to avoiding a specific macronutrient.
I don't eat gluten/wheat/grains or sugar (90% of the time).. so my carbs come from fruits and veggies :)
sugars are carbohydrates! so anything with sugar is a carb. fruits, veggies, breads, etc. but carbs aren't bad. in fact, they are quite necessary! :)
I don't like anything listed. So yay!!!! :)
lol, as soon as I saw the title, I thought of Regina George in the movie Mean Girls: "Is butter a carb...?" BAHAHAHA. XD
there is a difference between a good carb and a bad carb. A good carb would be an apple or whole wheat bread/pasta. Bad carbs are cheetos, pop tarts, and candy.
it's common sense.
How the crap could you NOT BLOODY KNOW that all of those are carbilicious?
I guess I'm the elitist Type 1 diabetic looking down on the fortunate people who don't have a clue how shit works!
)
(I vaguely recall my parents with dumb looks on their face when I got diagnosed with Dia-bee-tuhs what with the doctor going on about carbs and insulin and blood glucose they were all:
YOU BLASTED LUCKY FOOLS, count your blessings!
These are not surprising. The first two you would know from reading the labels and the last one is because carbs are a natural thing as well. When you begin the South Beach Diet (one of the low carb diets out there) you have to avoid fruit for a while and I think it really singles out apples as an example. I hated that week of "detoxing" from carbs. Not all carbs are bad for you and a low carb diet may not actually help you lose weight in a way that will keep it off. I used to be on the SB diet and once I went off it, even though I was still eating healthily and exercising, I quickly gained back 20 pounds. Similar things happened with my parents. You really have to be on a low carb diet all your life to keep the weight off and I know that avoiding the carbs was really making me feel sluggish. Carbs are fine in moderation and if they are in healthy foods like apples.
I do have to question who picks the blogs listed on the main page banner. To not know what carbs are and then call diabetes "sugar". Mon Dieu.
@fightingXstronger@xanga - Hahahahahah yes! I thought of that, too.
An apple has more like 20 grams of carbohydrate. Not counting fiber.
@Nina1981@xanga - Me too. I don't eat grains at all. Or processed foods. I don't use sugar when I cook either. But I'm gluten sensitive and lactose intolerant (like no dairy at all). So I basically eat meat, lots of clean saturated fats like ghee and coconut oil, veggies and a little fruit. Too much fruit makes me super full and uncomfortable.
@willjogforicecream@xanga - It's also much easier to eat more of them. I easily eat too much fruit til I feel uncomfortable, but if I eat clean, unprocessed meat cooked in lots of saturated fats (and very little polyunsaturated) I never eat past being perfectly satisfied. I just can't. I stop and feel no need to take another bite, whereas with carb I can keep eating and when I stop my stomach just about explodes (if I don't use every ounce of effort to control myself.)
just eat everything in moderation. never deny your body what it craves - trust your instincts. it's craving it because it's lacking it. be sure to develop a positive relationship with food. it also helps to have a well-rounded diet, even if it's not the healthiest or purest.
well-rounded. moderation.
that's all you need to remember.
and don't lie to or cheat yourself either!
"...but I believe that the majority of us do try to avoid the dreaded carb."
Not I. I get hungry, I eat, I'm happy. Rinse and repeat.
@fightingXstronger@xanga - LOL.
@antimony_demon@xanga - True that. Give me a hamburger, I'm good. Give me a box of cheeze-its, nomnomnom, "Ohhhh, whattt? I ate the whole box?":)
Apples are closer to 17 - 22g of carbs...
@willjogforicecream@xanga - what a major typo! Thanks for pointing it out towards me.
Thanks for all the comments! Like I said, educate me on carbs! I'm looking to listen and learn. Also, don't understand me wrong, I cannot live without muffins and wheat bread!
@shes_lump@xanga - Proper nutrition is common sense now? Obviously a huge percentage of Americans lack it then. It's all tied up in how our children are feed growing up and the teachings they get in school. My little brother is 11 and he doesn't even have a health class available! When I went to middle school, we always had an option out there. Also, I am open to hearing all comments and like I said above, educated me on carbs---nutrition as well. It's a topic I like learning about.
