  • Moral of the Study: The Capacity to Predict the Future

Ever feel like you can intuitively tell what is about to happen next?

Turns out this phenomenon is being researched, and the results indicate humans are able to somewhat predict the near future.

A study at Washington University focused on the mid brain dopamine system, which has evolved to signal the brain to predict events by using information in front of us.

As people age, or suffer from Alzheimer's, neurological diseases, and brain injuries, this stream of consciousness worsens. It turns out that a large part of the brain spends time figuring out what is going to happen next!

Do you feel like you always know what is going to happen next?

I predicted the future once. It was my freshman year of college, my mom and I were at an orientation spaghetti dinner...lots and lots of people there. You dropped your raffle ticket in the bucket as you walked in the door. They were about to start the raffle, I got a funny feeling and I turned to my mom and said "They're going to call my name." I was the first name called, won a T-shirt. It was a really odd situation to be coincidence, but I've never really had an experience like that again, so I don't really know what to make of it.

The human brain is one of the best at finding and identifying patterns in its environment--hence the intuition.  So if some people can get in better touch with that part of their consciousness then it's definitely possible to "predict the future" on a minor scale.

There is definitely so many different ways to look at this. There is so many people thinking about this so much. Unsure which way to go.
