  • Fried Friday: Are You a Part of the Pumpkin Flavor Phenom?

    TGIFF, my fellow Healthkickers!

Okay, I need you to help explain something to me. What is the deal with the pumpkin-flavor phenomenon?

Not only do most pumpkin-flavored foods/drinks carry high calorie counts, but in my honest opinion, they ALWAYS taste AWFUL. My one friend said it perfectly:
"I don't understand how anyone likes pumpkin flavored anything 'cept maybe pie. SPECIFICALLY, beer should taste of beer and coffee of coffee." - my friend Dan

I agree 100%, Dan. I just can't get behind the pumpkin flavor! Why would I want to drink something that tastes like warm gourds? And why would I ever want to get drunk off of pumpkin-pie juice?

It just doesn't sit well with me.

But I reach out to you, my fellow Healthkickers, for a little pumpkinspiration. Tell me something - am I missing out!?

Are you a part of the pumpkin flavor phenomenon? Do you enjoy non-pumpkin, pumpkin-flavored foods or drinks? What's your favorite?

    PUMPKIN PIE OM NOM NOM

And the pumpkin spice drink from Starbucks isn't THAT bad... Not amazing, but not bad.Other than that, I'm not really a pumpkin-flavor fan either.

I don't really think this is a new phenomenon, is it? Seems it happens every Autumn to me.

  • ccccourage@xanga

I use pumpkin in a lot of recipes, but I don't flavor random things pumpkin. Or does adding pumpkin puree to plain yogurt count? Some cinnamon and ginger and it's yummy!

  • BettyKrypton@xanga

Last night we had pumpkin beer with pumpkin chocolate cupcakes :D

I think it is what goes along with the pumpkin flavor (cinnamon, nutmeg, ect). I LOVE pumpkin bread and pumpkin pie and I guess it just carries over to my coffee.I actually don't like coffee that tastes like coffee (though I oddly love coffee flavored ice cream?) so I always need something, mocha, pumpkin, cinnamon, cocoanut, something to flavor it.

Pumpkin Pancakes! I love pumpkin pancakes! I never had any pumpkin beverages...

and since I was born in November-- pumpkin pie all the wayyy. I've had it multiple times as the cake substitute on birthdays. Well, when it's on Thanksgiving I have the pie anyways. :P

I love pumpkin flavored stuff because of the idea. And I like beer that has pumpkin on the label, because I get drunk and realize that I'm drinking pumpkin beer and I get really happy. I love fall and october and halloween, therefore, I love pumpkin.

  • TiredSoVeryTired@xanga

I love pumpkin flavored stuff and have for years.  I really like Pumpkin bread.  (And pumpkin pie, of course).

  • ice8angel@xanga

I love pumpkin! Baked pumpkin tastes good. =) I'm not sure about pumpkin flavoured stuff though. Hadn't have the chance to try it. =S

There are a bunch of pumpkin beers that are okay only two I've found to be great.  I think everyone started to jump on it when they saw the success of one or two brewers making a pumpkin flavored ale.  I'm all for pumpkin pie and pumpkin added to brownies and cupcakes and cakes, it makes them more moist.  I really can't say I've had pumpkin coffee, but going on the notion that I don't like other flavored coffees, I'm not sure I'd ever try them.  I do, however like it when it's mixed in the Starbuck's pumpkin lattes, but I can only ever order a tall.  Too much more and I can never finish it.  Pumpkin pancakes and pumpkin bread are things I make year round so I don't quite know if I'm 'on the pumpkin bandwagon' per se.  Maybe.

Because typically it doesnt taste like a actualy warm pumpkin, it almost always has a pumpkin pie flavor to it. Like a warm, rich, sweet, and cinnamony taste. I'm not a huge fan myself because the drinks that are flavored pumpkin usually come along with 20 differrent types of really unhealthy syrups and flavorings , but I can defiantly see the appeal and I sometimes splurge on one because it just taste so rich and puts me in the holiday mood.

ALSO i love pumpkin beers! I'll drink one of those anyday!

  • enoughtodiefor@xanga

...why is this called fried friday?

  • chikadee198540@xanga

It's more about the pumpkin pie spice flavor, than the actual PUMPKIN.

  • iamnotanixie@xanga

well this is kind of silly.

pumpkins are in season in the fall, not exactly phenomenal, just nature doing its thing. and pumpkin is a traditional thing to be used in food and decorations for autumn holidays, halloween and thanksgiving.and like some others stated, things like lattes and beer, are flavoured with just the pumpkin pie spices.novelty drinks are around all year, just different ones, these make sense for the season, because of traditional holiday foods.like gingerbread and peppermint flavoured things at christmas time.that said, it's my favorite time of year so i love pumpkin flavoured everything! but i'm gluten intolerant so i can't have my pumpkin flavoured halloween beer anymore :/ and apparently the pumpkin spice syrup at starbucks has milk in it so i can't have it since i'm vegan.but i can make my own things at home :)
  • x_papergirl@xanga

I like pumpkin spice coffee and pumpkin pie. Nothing else though...

@Grtt@xanga - I didn't really mean that it was a *new* phenom, but I've seen it more over the past year or two than ever before - I blame the onslaught of pumpkin coffee for this!

I love Pumpkin-flavored ice cream and coffee! YUM!  but the truth is, it's not the flavor of actual pumpkin that people like (in fact, the "warm gourd" that you pointed out is very mild in flavor when cooked) , it's the familiar spices used in pumpkin pie that we love: cinnamon, all spice, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, vanilla and sugar.  It's like a hint of what Thanksgiving will be like before the day FINALLY arrives.

  • rays_anatomy@xanga

pumpkin shakes, pumpkin bread, pumpkin bars, pumpkin ice cream.
I've eaten all of those things since about 6 years ago. This is not a phenomenon. It is a seasonal flavor.

  • ZombieMom_Speaks@xanga

It happens every fall, so I'm pretty used to seeing it. I actually look forward to it, fresh pumpkins and apples are plentiful and find their way into everything. ON NOM NOM!

If you don't like it, I really don't think you're missing anything, it's just your preference. You're okay (lol)!

  • Welcome_To_Your_New_Obsession@xanga

because it is FESTIVE!! tis' the season for pumpkins!

  • princesspig23@xanga

I NEED PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE NOWS!!!! OMNOMNOM
Also pumpkin breads and muffins are amazing.
They don't taste like what raw pumpkin tastes like.
    But they taste amazing  O_O

I don't know why I like the starbucks drink. I expected it to be more amazing but I had one over the weekend and now I want another one.
    I suspect drugs.

    • About Me: While I tried to stay in college for as long as I possibly could, I picked up a Psychology minor, forcing myself to learn a little about mental health. What I didn't know was how closely linked mental and physical health, are to each other. Now that I've graduated, I've enjoyed writing about all different aspects of health for Healthkicker. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that there's no way to live healthy unless you're happy, too. I'm hoping to be able to give as much insight as I can, while picking up a few tips from everyone along the way!
If there was one drink I could not live with, it'd be WATER. While I do thrive off of energy drinks, I drink about 15 glasses of water a day. As far as my favorite foods go, I'll eat anything with cheese, chicken, and asparagus. Also, ANY kind of fruit!
