Best News Ever: Pizza is Now a Vegetable!
...Well, if Congress has anything to say about it.
According to news reports, "A school lunches Bill going before Congress aims to reclassify the junk food due to the tomato paste on the dough."
Was I vegetarian all through college without even knowing!?
Now anyone that knows me knows that I adore pizza; I'd eat it for nearly every meal if I could. I eat it cold, piping hot, room temperature... thin crust, thick crust, with sauce, without sauce -- the pizza possibilities are endless. But I'm wise enough to know that this pizza intake does not substitute the need to ingest vegetables - and I try my best to offset the lack of nutritional content in pizza by eating healthy the rest of the time.
To make matters worse, making pizza a vegetable "would also slow efforts to make pizzas — a longtime standby on school lunch lines — healthier, with whole grain crusts and lower levels of sodium."
This is a serious issue - pizza is so easy to adjust to make it healthier, but this act of vegetableism would ensure that nothing would have to be done to make them better for the kids.
While I'd love pizza to be considered a vegetable... I just don't think it's a smart move.
What do you think? Should pizza be considered a vegetable so that it counts in the school lunchroom? What are your thoughts on this possibility?

It's pretty obvious what happened here. These government got some money from some pizza makers and voila, pizza is a vegetable. This is ridiculous. They were trying to make school lunches healthier.. but nope, gotta get that money.
Making pizza a vegetable doesn't make pizza healthy to eat.
@Saridactyl@xanga - *the government. Stupid phone.
...no.
Just.. no.
No. Pizza is NOT a vegetable.
The government is idiotic.
call it whatever you want but it's still PIZZA
If pizza is a vegetable then white chocolate cherry cheesecake is a health food.
Last time I checked, tomatoes were considered a type of fruit...
Or how about parents stop relying on schools and governments to keep their kids healthy and tell them what is healthy and what isn't?????
tomatoes are fruit anyway, so that logic is redundant.
I'm gonna go ahead and be redundant but yes, tomatoes are in fact fruits. Sooo... this is not logical even if you wanted to classify like that... really it's fruit, grain, and dairy.
...tomato is a fruit... this logic is just absurd.
The only way Pizza would ever be considered a vegetable, is if they did away with that fake pepperoni stuff, and loaded the piece of pizza with all of these great vegetables such as peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach, real tomatoes, etc, with enough of a veggie/bread/sauce ratio, that the ratio of vegetables to everything else overpowers the bread and sauce.
Bad move, government.
Oh my gosh... seriously? What about all those pepperoni and all those pizza with meat toppings?
This illustrates perfectly one of the many reasons that I want a small government that's not responsible for things like health care and retirement.
They fuck everything up. I can't trust the masses to elect intelligent people to handle my life for me.
If they can't handle school lunches competently, how on earth will they manage anything bigger?
On the actual subject of school lunches, I think that those decisions should be made locally. That way the parents have a little more control.
They can call it whatever they want. Doesn't change what you are really eating.
I have nothing against serving pizza for lunch, we had it every Friday when I was in public school. I'm just afraid because it is now a "vegetable", schools won't serve any type of REAL (non-canned...) vegetables for kids to eat.
i am soo confused. given a plain cheese pizza, i cannot think of even one vegetable on it! how does this make sense.
No. Ew lol. Pizza is delish, but no lol.
Pizza is not a vegetable! However, pizza can be made healthier, but will the kids eat it? I'd love to see more actual fruit and vegetables in the school lunches. Until that changes, I am going to pack lunch for my kids (in the future). Government, don't you have some bigger fish to fry than deciding whether or not pizza should count towards the fruit and vegetable recommended daily servings?
@srsly__x@xanga - haha, i don't get it either. it's like calling a sandwich a vegetable.
Omg this is awesome, now I can stuff my face with pizza all the time and not feel bad about it!! Sweet! Our government at work ladies and gentlemen, round of applause....but I'm sure this is in the peoples' best interest and has nothing to do with money whatsoever. *scoff*
Words fail me.
@StatelessPilot@revelife - With all those fruits (cherries) and even cheese?! Of course its a health food! (complete sarcasm intended)
This is freaking ridiculous.
That is utterly ridiculous. Of course pizza is not a vegetable and the tomato paste on this pizza? More bad than good. People need to get a grip, start actually caring about our nation's children and stop trying to angle everything toward making money. How hard is it to pack a child's lunch in the morning? At least you will know what is going in their mouths for pete's sake.
