Be Safe While Cooking Healthy Food

This is a guest post from Matt! Not all of us reading this blog are good cooks, but we do have a desire for health eating. To consistently eat healthy you need to learn to cook at home. Eating out every night is not going to cut it. For novice cooks, kitchen safety is incredibly important.
Most people learn to cook from a parent or grandparent. If you are one of the many that did not learn this valuable skill, don't worry. Grab a cookbook and read up on safety measure. The rest will come with practice!
What is your closest call in the kitchen? Have you ever had a near-emergency while trying to cook healthy foods?

I once set a toaster on fire making Pop Tarts. Fun!
i set a pot holder on fire
LOL Ms. Doubtfire
Why is this even an article?
My older brother once put something covered in foil in the microwave, that was the day we discovered fire.
The day my younger brother discovered fire was when we decided he was old enough to operate the microwave without assistance..instead of thirty seconds he put in three minutes, and made an extremely crisp piece of pizza. Also when asked what the fire alarm was used for, my youngest brother replied, "It's the sound that goes off when ma is cooking."Not exactly healthy foods, but my family clearly does not adhere to safety.I was hoping for actual tips instead of just "grab a cookbook..." but,
I once put ramen in the microwave and forgot to add water so it started to smoke a lot. I quickly put it outside onto our wooden deck to cool off. But it was kind of windy outside so the ramen caught on fire and burned a hole in my deck... Dad wasn't happy when he came home.
@maybmaybnot@xanga - You beat me to it! I also set a potholder on fire. Luckily I didn't burn down the house.
I cut the end of my finger off with a mandolin that had the serrated blade in.
The ones at culinary school were bare-boned, all-metal scary looking contraptions with no guards, so I was careful about using them. My in-laws got me this pretty red thing with a guard that I *obviously* didn't need because I'd used them so often before. What can I say? I got cocky, and now I've got two small scars and a numby patch on my finger.
The worst I've had are burns, some small but still took weeks to heal, and cuts. Never really set anything on fire..burned plenty of stuff but not fires....yet.
Started a fire while cooking pasta. No, didn't set the pasta on fire, there was (apparently) grease in the well under the burner :/ Flames licked up the side of the pot and like 2 feet up the wall. TERRIFYING.
When I was little, my mom fell asleep cooking rice. My dad came home and smelled something burning and went to check what it was. Yeah he opened the lid and it sort of exploded.
