  • Susan G. Komen & the WTF of the Day

    Have you heard the news?

The Susan G. Komen Foundation - famously known as one of the leading breast cancer foundations in the country - has pulled funding from Planned Parenthood.

According to CBS News, "Planned Parenthood decried Komen for having 'succumbed to political pressure' related to abortion politics." However, according to the Foundation, "Grant making decisions are not about politics," and a statement was written, which included information regarding the grant-making process, and how its "implemented more stringent eligibility and performance criteria."

Leslie Aun, a spokesperson for Komen, told AP that the Foundation "crafted new guidelines that prohibits organizations under investigation from the government from receiving financial support."

What do you think? Was this a move by the Foundation based on political pressure? Do you think it was a right move?

they totally bailed for pc pressure...  d-u-m-b...  unless of course, they didn't want those less fortunate women to get any more preventative/diagnostic screenings...

  • MyTwoCentss@xanga

Yeah, PP is SO good at breast exams...  Have you seen the video proving otherwise?  The video.
    My blog on this subject.

  • spokenfor@xanga

yeah because a non-profit should totally fund an ethically questionable "for-profit" organization. hey ladies, you can get your boobs checked anywhere, rather than a place that is known to encourage pregnant women that abortion is their best option. I'll pass

  • RealistFantasies@xanga

of course it wasn't the right movie. people can't afford life-saving tests otherwise, and people are going to die because of this.

i hope all the anti-choicers supporting this (completely political) move feel personally responsible, since they pretty much are.

I fully support Planned Parenthood.  They provide me with very affordable healthcare and birth control.  I donate every time I go and get more birth control pills.

My last gynecological visit cost under $100 because I went to a Planned Parenthood.

Because of them, I will be able to get an exam and a pap smear every year.  If I get cancer, I will be able to catch it early because of Planned Parenthood.
  • listenslikespring@xanga

@TakingxOverxMe@xanga - I agree. I get decent help there with issues. I've never run into a rude, bitchy doctor and it's cheap which is super useful for a college student with Florida healthcare :P

  • ohhmademoiselle@xanga

Though I never used Planned Parenthood (the free clinic at my school does the same thing), I highly support them. They help young women and men get the services they needed. When I graduate college and I have trouble finding a good job with insurance, I'd probably use their services.

  • oledphatnuglee@xanga

Less money to pay for medical tests is pretty much always a bad idea. Prevention or early detection are less expensive than treatment later.... Devils advocate time again... However, did anyone miss that the article stated that planned parenthood is under investigation by the government? What's with that? If they're not spending government money properly or have some other major issue there's a good chance that a charity's funds may not be handled well either. Charities are responsible to the people who donate money to them to be sure that it doesn't go to waste... Also, I was under the impression that President Obama's new health care plan was providing insurance for "everyone" now, doesn't insurance pay for pap smears? Last time I was in a clinic they didn't offer mamograms so I would assume that a pap smear is the only medical procedure providing cancer screening that PP provides other than maybe a physical exam of yoru breast which you could do yourself? There are always two sides to a coin and it's easy to just accept the current shouts from either biased side but sometimes it helps to consider the question more carefully.... Off to look into the government investigation....

  • WakeUpLaughing@xanga

I think Komen can distribute its funds in whatever way they feel is most appropriate. And if they decide to stopping funding an organization that is under investigation, that's their right. While I think PP does a good job providing lost cost reproductive care, I've never thought they had anything to do with breast cancer screening.

  • Ork58@xanga

The article and the news release are misleading and false. The Komen foundation is not pulling funding for any current organization they support.

I suggest you watch this message from Nancy Brinker, the founder of the Susan Komen foundation.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4oOh6JhayA

Instead of the half truths and hype, might do a little research before perpetuating this nonsense.

On a personal note, I wouldn't give Planned Parenthood the time of day. They promote abortions, which are the killing of live, unborn children. Not a "tissue mass". Of the many other services PP offers, those services are available at many other outlets who do NOT promote abortion.

  • Ork58@xanga

Oh, and by the way, in the little pink picture at the top, why not substitute "perform abortions" for "screen for breast cancer". We all know that is the true intent of PP anyway, the other "services" are secondary.

  • hot_metalhead@xanga

People who claim that PP doesn't have anything to do with breast cancer screening or who claim that PP pressures women to get abortions have probably never been to Planned Parenthood to use their services.  I go there for all of my reproductive health stuff and get my annual gyno exam there every year since I graduated from college and couldn't afford health insurance at my shitty job.  I guess the Komen foundation can do whatever the hell they want, but it does seem like a political move.  Touchy issue.  I just get tired of people who have obviously never had much experience with Planned Parenthood shit-talk it all the time.  It's a great provider of healthcare for women, especially women who have low income.

And they do NOT try to pressure people into abortions.  Christ, that is the one I can't stand hearing about.  Ever been there when pregnant?  No?  Then don't say stuff like that.  I actually have, and no one pressured me into or out of anything.  They gave me information and I made a choice BY MYSELF.  I am sick of this myth of pressure to get abortions.  Unless you go to a PP clinic that happens to have a doctor with an agenda, this pressure thing is 100% grade-A bullshit spouted by anti-choicers.  Sorry, off-topic, but it pisses me off.

  • hot_metalhead@xanga

@Ork58@xanga - Do you KNOW that is their true intent?  Have you ever been there or used their services?  Ever gotten an exam there?  Ever been pregnant and gone there?  If you haven't, then you probably have no actual idea.  It is not an evil place where their main goal is to suck babies out of wombs.  That's an antiquated and misinformed viewpoint about Planned Parenthood that I can't believe still exists.  If anything, I'd say their main intent is women's health and BIRTH CONTROL, which prevents the need for abortions at all.  If more people were on birth control, the pro-life vs. pro-chocie debate wouldn't even need to rage like it does, and Planned Parenthood is a mainstay for affordable birth control.

  • under_the_carpet@xanga

*shrugs*..the most important point is the money should be invested for the prevention of breast cancer. If Komen invests it elsewhere, women will probably get their examinations elsewhere. So for whatever reason they did this I don't think it's terrible news (for the population).

The picture is good. But not only doctors at planned parenthood can do it; others too.

  • phoebester@xanga

Yes, it was a blatant kow-tow to Republican abuse of power. The Susan G. Komen Foundation should be ashamed of itself.

Nevertheless the Susan G. Komen Foundation has always been unethical when it came to money allotment. Two years ago the Foundation took money slated for breast cancer research and spent it on a frivolous lawsuit over who had the rights to use the phrase "Race for the Cure." Stephen Colbert gave a blistering critique of the Susan G. Komen Foundation after he withdrew his endorsement of the organization. http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/369693/january-03-2011/tip-wag---susan-g--komen-foundation---spider-man-musical

  • kingtutsfavmistress@xanga

planned parenthood does NOT provide mammograms, they only refer people to other places!

  • live_love_learn625@xanga

@Ork58@xanga -  i'm sorry, but that video and her "sadness" is about as real as her face.

  • DontTurnAway@xanga
  • DontTurnAway@xanga

@hot_metalhead@xanga - the fact is, if you don't want to get pregnant, then PP is the place to go. If you don't want to BE pregnant, then it's whomever's choice to make, not the public.

I'm also sick and tired of people trying to take my body and mind as an ethics debate. Seriously, what I put on my body, what I do inside my body, what I wear outside my body-- IT'S MY CHOICE. Should be the same for BC, for abortions, adoption, Plan-B, ANYTHING.
PP has treated me well, and my mother and sister both agree that if it weren't for them, they wouldn't know if they were pregnant, they wouldn't have a place to get a PAP for cheap, and BC wouldn't be so easily accessible either.
In short, I agree with you. You actually have experience with being pregnant there, I don't; but never once have I heard somebody say "PP MADE me get an abortion." SORRY, honey, but nobody can "make" you do anything.
  • ThaPlatinumOne@xanga

This whole situation has been blown out of proportion and twisted in true political style.  SMH  Susan G. Komen implemented a new policy that states that they can not fund any company that is under investigation.  Pure and simple. I think that Susan G. Komen should have set up some sort of system to make up for all of the women (like me) who have used Planned Parenthood for birth control, breast cancer screenings, and things like that. I hope that once the investigation of Planned Parenthood is over, that they will continue to fund them, but I don't believe we can criticize Susan G. Komen until the investigation is over and they decide to whether or not to continue to fund Planned Parenthood.

  • HopeWithinReach@xanga

I Fully Fully Fully support Planned Parenthood. I went there as a teenager to get my first birth control and years after. And when I was struck hard by unemployment they did not turn me away.

They caught cancerous cells in my uterus when I was 19 and preformed the needed procedure to get them out before they caused more damage.

I donate every single year and this year I doubled my donation.

  • grim_truth@xanga

Wow.  So... people seem to think that Susan G. Komen ONLY donated to PP and that PP is the ONLY place to go for breast cancer screening?

@RealistFantasies@xanga - That is quite honestly, either one of the most purposefully misleading, or completely ignorant statements that I have ever read in my life.

What do you think Susan G. Komen is going to do with the money that was being given to PP?  Do you think they will not donate it elsewhere?  Are they going to set it on fire and light their cigars?

You are fear pandering, which makes you a blatant hypocrite.  You have repeatedly accused republicans of doing it, and now you are.  "People are going to die because of this" is a bullshit statement, as that money will be donated to other places for screening and research.

  • bbanmen420@xanga

@TakingxOverxMe@xanga -  Exactly! I go to PP when I get my pills, or if I am under the shot.. The shot is about $65 at PP... I went to the doctors before and it cost $300! I cannot afford to spend THAT much on birth control, and I definitly cant afford a kid.. I really like PP and I dont care if they do abortions, Im sure doctors offices do as well....

I thought abortions werent financed anyways? Either way, this is stupid how they make such a BIG DEAL out of what people want to do with THEIR lives.. I'd rather babies not be born than born into poverty and abuse.. Just saying..

@hot_metalhead@xanga -  I've learnt to try and ignore the ignorant people. Its always their way or the highway. I completely agree with you though.

    • About Me: While I tried to stay in college for as long as I possibly could, I picked up a Psychology minor, forcing myself to learn a little about mental health. What I didn't know was how closely linked mental and physical health, are to each other. Now that I've graduated, I've enjoyed writing about all different aspects of health for Healthkicker. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that there's no way to live healthy unless you're happy, too. I'm hoping to be able to give as much insight as I can, while picking up a few tips from everyone along the way!
If there was one drink I could not live with, it'd be WATER. While I do thrive off of energy drinks, I drink about 15 glasses of water a day. As far as my favorite foods go, I'll eat anything with cheese, chicken, and asparagus. Also, ANY kind of fruit!
