  • Let's Talk about Weight Loss

Obviously, there are healthy ways and unhealthy ways to lose weight. Sometimes, the unhealthy ways seem more appealing, and sometimes, we do unhealthy healthy things in healthy weight loss plans to try to increase our weight loss.

The thing you have to remember, is that we are doing this to be healthy. If slower weight loss is healthier weight loss, then that's what your body needs. Trust me, I know it's tempting to go a few days without eating, because you know that you could drop 5 pounds really quickly, but that's not healthy- and it's borderline anorexia.

With my schedule, to be perfectly honest, sometimes I forget to eat. To be more honest, sometimes, I know I haven't eaten, and I know that I need to stop to eat, but I don't. According to my blood test, my blood sugar was low. I have not confirmed that it was anything more than a one time ordeal, but I would bet that it's usually like that. I get shaky and nauseous if I don't eat.

So yesterday sucked ass, and I somehow managed to make it until 2 a.m. before I felt sick enough that I had to eat. Usually, if I make it until after dark before I realize I haven't eaten, then I'll try not to eat anything. At that point, my head is saying, "it's bad to eat right before you go to bed." I've got to get better about that. I ended up eating 2 eggs at 2 in the morning so my stomach would settle enough for me to sleep.

Let me clarify that I do not believe that slow weight loss is always healthier. Obviously, my weight loss has not been slow, but I have said this before, and I will say it again: For me- I needed to drop a lot of weight fast. I weighed 270lbs at 21 years old, and I had to do SOMETHING. Also, I truly believe that HCG is a perfectly healthy weight loss plan for anyone who needs to lose more than 20lbs. I am not a scientist, or a doctor, so I'm not going to try to explain how it works on here, but I can assure you that I did my research before I made this decision.

    Here is my concern:

I have seen so many women on Xanga who are obviously doing very dangerous things to their bodies.

I have seen where they try to eat zero calories, and I have seen where they talk about having to purge.

I have seen starting weights of 110lbs and goal weights of 90lbs.

It seems obvious to me that these women are doing this for their appearance, and not their health. That is so sad to me. I do not mean this to sound cocky, but I have always considered myself a pretty woman. I look like my mother, and even when I was 270lbs, I saw our similarities in the mirror, and I was never very concerned about the appearance aspect of my weight. I'm not saying that I didn't have hard times in school, or even as an adult, but  they were never bad enough for me that I sought bulimia or anorexia as a solution, and honestly, I am still worried that I won't be attractive as a skinny person.

For me, as of today: 276.4lbs. One year and two months later.

Oh---- For all of you women trying to lose weight who actually NEED to lose weight- I am very proud of each of you for making the decision to take control of your life back. Let me know if you EVER need anything.

For the record: That should have read: "For me, as of today: 176.4lbs. One year and two months later." I have a bad habit of typing in the 200s instead of the 100s. I was over 200 for a really long time.

@temporarilyinnocent@xanga - Any tips on losing weight? I'm trying to lose 30 pounds, I'm above my limit, and I want to go back to my pre-college weight, which would mean I'm average for my height.

  • temporarilyinnocent@xanga

@passionate_kisses579@xanga - I can give you more tips than you would imagine, but out of principle, I'd like to know how much you weigh and what your height is first. You can message me that if you want.

On a health note (that helps whether you are overweight or not), drinking water is the biggest thing for weight loss. I'm sure you've heard that before, but the more water you drink, the more opportunity your body has to get rid of the bad stuff.

Cutting out pastas (and other white things) is also a pretty awesome idea. Pasta's clog you up... again, you aren't able to get rid of the bad stuff. White usually means starch and carbs. Both aren't just fattening, but not good for you in large quantities.

I'm a firm believer in "everything in moderation".

Disclaimer: I'm not a licensed anything. I'm just a woman who has lost a lot of weight.

Congrats on losing 100lbs! That's truly wonderful :)

Everyone should know that the less you eat the more your body holds onto fat, it believes it's being starved. Starvation and purging is hurting your body as much as it's hurting your psyche. I feel truly sorry for anyone who feels they have to go through that to live up to society's unnatural standards.

  • temporarilyinnocent@xanga

@TiPrometto@xanga - Thank you! And exactly! When you don't eat anything, your body won't let you lose anything. That's a big deal with HCG. You have to eat, or your body will go into starvation mode.

  • TiredSoVeryTired@xanga

Congrats on your weight loss.  I have lost 52 pounds.  I am only 5' even.  I was up to 172 and right now I'm around 120.  I want to loose 10/15 pounds more to get rid of my gut and get down to a healthier BMI.  I haven't lost anything since last year, kinda annoying.  I find it very annoying when someone who weighs 110 thinks they need to get down to 90 pounds.  Yikes!

  • SimpleCrazyLove@xanga

I can't even tell you how much I love this post. You voiced a lot of things I've been thinking about recently. Congratulations on your weight loss to this point!

  • xOne_twentyX@xanga

I can't go one day without eating. I get horrible headaches and super moody. When I was working as a teacher in an elementary school my supervisor would put so much pressure on me and give me extra work that I had no time to even sit down. I forgot to eat and ended up with a meal a day (which was light because it was right before bed too) I had bad sleep (4 hrs only) and I lost 2-3 lbs a week. You can imagine now why I resigned that job after two months. I was so sick and tired even took work home and didnt finish (oh, and on weekends too.. which I would sleep the entire weekend straight)

This post seems like it was written by someone that doesn't actually understand anything about eating disorders.

  • temporarilyinnocent@xanga

@Ms_Lola_Mae@xanga - I never claimed to understand them, but my point is that I have watched people develop eating disorders in an attempt to lose weight for health reasons.

  • temporarilyinnocent@xanga

    @xOne_twentyX@xanga -   Thank you!

@SimpleCrazyLove@xanga - My job takes a lot out of me. It's hard because I work overnights anywhere from 52-64 hours a week, and I go to school full time. Finding a time and remembering to eat is one of my fallbacks.

  • Ms_Lola_Mae@xanga

@temporarilyinnocent@xanga - But you seem to be very judgmental of those that have them. Plus, at one point you are saying "lose weight in a healthy way" and then in another place you are saying that you had to lose weight quickly because you were at 270 and HAD to lose the weight fast. That statement in and of itself is not healthy. This is coming from someone who is currently 300 pounds and is recovering from an eating disorder. Your post seemed to come off as a bit hypocritcal to me.

  • temporarilyinnocent@xanga

@Ms_Lola_Mae@xanga - I didn't mean for it to be judgmental. I do believe that I had to lose weight fast, and I do believe that HCG is a healthy way to lose weight. For some people, it's healthier to lose weight fast (via HCG, the lapband, gastric bipass, whatever) than it would be to carry that weight around on their body for the amount of time it would take to lose it. My entire family is morbidly obese. The majority of my family has all of the health problems that go with that, from diabetes to joint problems. It hurt my knees to walk around campus. It hurt my ankles to get on an elliptical machine. Doing that kind of damage to my joints was unnecessary.

Everyone has their own story with weight. I've battled with mine for years. This is the first time I have ever won the battle.

I apologize if I came off as insensitive.

  • Ms_Lola_Mae@xanga

@temporarilyinnocent@xanga - Well, I really do wish you the best of luck in continuing on your weight-loss journey. I can understand the chronic joint pain and wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

  • alm0ndmilk@xanga

Going a few days without eating is not "borderline anorexia". Anorexia is a mental disorder. I'm sorry but that was a very stupid statement.

  • temporarilyinnocent@xanga

@alm0ndmilk@xanga -  Sentences that begin with "I'm sorry, but" are always stupid statements. You aren't sorry, or you wouldn't have said it.

I'm not an expert on eating disorders, and I don't pretend to be, but I don't imagine that full blown anorexia would develop overnight. Not eating for a few days in order to lose weight- sounds like the begining of anorexia to me. However, that's not the point. The point isn't about what is or isn't an eating disorder, it was about trying to lose weight for health instead of for looks. It's about the mentality behind wanting to lose weight, and making sure you have the right motivation.

  • alm0ndmilk@xanga

@temporarilyinnocent@xanga - The apology meant I'm not intending on offending YOU personally, but what you SAID is something I disagree with.

There are lots of people who fast for weight loss and successfully combine it with a healthy diet to get great results. Other people look at it differently, as starvation. Well, starvation in it's literal meaning is when a person does not have enough fat reserves to sustain itself, AND is not getting enough incoming nourishment to make up for that deficiency in fat stores. If a 5 foot tall, 150 pound female goes two or three days with no food, she's not "starving" in the least bit. And if she's able to, after those initial few days, begin a healthy, nutrient rich, calorie-sufficient diet, then kudos to her, she made it work. It all depends on your mindset. If you see fasting as some sort of punishment or quick weight loss gimmick that will make you deprived, hungry, depressed, etc, then it will be. If you see it as an enriching, interesting, new experience, that can help you practice self discipline and transition into a healthier lifestyle, then you will benefit from it.
And what's wrong with losing weight for looks as long as you're not negative about it? There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a sexy body. Just because I'm not obese or overweight doesn't mean I can't work to lose a few pounds and tone up. Especially since, even though my weight was "healthy" to begin with prior to starting my new eating & exercise plan, my lifestyle was not. I was eating fast food nearly every day. I was constantly gorging myself with unhealthy, sugary, fattening things. I felt sluggish and lazy all the time. Now, I'm eating things that are rich in nutrients, low in fat, and tasty. I'm experimenting with new healthy foods, as well as working out almost daily, something I never used to do. My body is firming up and I'm feeling so much better about myself. My lifestyle is completely changing and I want to keep this up as long as I can, even after my weight loss goal is achieved. And I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.
  • XxX_starving_XxX@xanga

Congrats on your weight loss! I hope you continue to do well.
Remember people dont develop eating disorders just to lose weight and you cant just decide to start being anorexic/bulimic. I think that could have been worded better.
    Anyway good luck

  • temporarilyinnocent@xanga

@alm0ndmilk@xanga - Sounds like you're doing this to improve your lifestyle- to be healthier.

People who want to be thin for the sake of being thinner when they are already healthy--- whatever, that's their business. My problem is that our society is filled with women who want to be underweight to "look good" or who want to lose weight for any reason in an unhealthy way.

Completely fasting for the sake of weight loss without taking vitamins or some type of nutrition supplement is not healthy. Your body needs calories to survive.

  • Erika_Steele@xanga

Congrats on your weight loss.  I hope that you continue to maintain a healthier lifestyle.  Believe me, I understand how hard it is.

I know this has been said before and you've said that you don't know anything about eating disorders, but the biggest misconception about eating disorders is that women do it to look pretty and thin. 99% of the time it is always much deeper than that.  When I was battling anorexia nervosa (according to my doctor, I didn't think I was thin enough), it was always about self-destruction whether I would have admitted or not. To say eating disorders are for the sake of vanity trivializes them.  Even though I am recovered it still irks me when people think it is about weight and being model thin.  Like someone else said, perhaps it could have been worded better or perhaps the eating disorder comparisons could have been left out.

  • WaitingToShrug@xanga

That is wonderful that you're losing weight- you should be very proud of yourself.

  • anonymous

The best key for weight loss is patience.

If you are trying to lose weight for a deadline, you will do short term things - quick fixes.
Instead go for long term weight loss. Don't be in a hurry. Make small changes that you know you can stick with.  If you keep making small changes each week, they add up over time to significant weight loss that lasts.

  • too_pretty_to_die@xanga

@temporarilyinnocent@xanga - unfortunately, i live for pasta.  i have done my best to switch out white pasta for whole wheat, and i use sauces that are lower in calories, fat, sodium, whatever.  any tips on how to replace certain foods so that you still satisfy your cravings, so to speak?

  • SimpleCrazyLove@xanga

@temporarilyinnocent@xanga - I don't have a problem remembering to eat, I get shaky and nauseous if I don't eat and will pass out or get sick in short order if I don't eat. I'm just glad someone stated the fact that weight needs to be lost in a healthy way, and only to be healthy, not just to be skinny and look good.
