  • Have You Heard of State-Sponsored Rape?

Virginia poised to enact a "State-Sponsored Rape" law, forcing women to be vaginally probed before abortions. Legislator suggests that women who consent to sex also consent to vaginal probing. And I say... What about rape victims? How can they force rape victims to be penetrated again against their will?

The revised criminal definition of rape is "the penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object." It is 100% rape as it is legally defined.

Earlier this month, a bill requiring women to receive an ultrasound before they can receive an abortion passed the Virginia senate, and it recently cleared a state house committee with an overwhelming majority. Bill would be to force most women to undergo a stunningly invasive procedure for no medical reason whatsoever.

An unnamed lawmaker told a fellow Virginia delegate, a woman already consented to being "vaginally penetrated when they got pregnant."

The state is forcing women to be penetrated with an object against their will in order to obtain a LEGAL medical procedure. I find Virginia's invasion of a woman's right to choose an end run around Roe V. Wade and an invasion of a woman's person!

So would you call this state sponsored rape, assisting in state sponsored murder? Funny how people try and flip things.

..for me personally, I have an issue with the "thinking" behind this. The idea that because a woman/girl consented [rape victims aside] to having sex, she has automatically "consented" to being vaginally probed before going through an abortion. Last I checked, when I consented to having a biological & fun time with a guy, & his penis goes into me, like it normally would. Keyword:normal how the hell am I consciously or even subconsciously saying that I am giving my consent to having a

    foreign

object shoved inside me at a potential later date? I'm not. I am even SAYING I am not. I do not want to be probed & pictures or whatever taken of my fetus. The act of thinking, let alone going through an abortion is a hellish ordeal. There is no actual reason for this "medical" procedure to be done. If a woman/girl is going through with having an abortion, she has already done all the research, the thinking & the fretting. Therefore, there is absolutely no need for the ordeal that's already rough, to be drawn out. She doesn't need to have an object inserted into her, pictures or whatever taken/done & even shown what the doctors did. It sounds an awful lot like it's a guilt trip to making the woman/girl re-think her decsion, while hiding behind it being a "simple medical procedure." Abortions have been happening for years & there's never been an issue or proven medical fact that ultrasounds of the fetus, by probing the woman/girl & looking at it etc. should be taken prior to the abortion. It's true some abortions go haywire or something happens..& it's a shame. Again, any talks, research etc SHOULD have already been done by the woman/girl & her doctor. She should know of the risks etc associated with abortion & if she doesn't her doctor should know & talk to her about it in an unbiased way, before they scheduled the abortion. Which is a far cry from having her spread her legs, probe her & take pictures or whatever of the fetus. I also, noticed a lot of people going on about how young girls or women do abortions as "the easy way out" this is may be true. I know of a few ladies who have sadly decided on abortions as a method of "birth control." It's awful. However, just because a handful of women/girls use abortions in an unhealthy & stupid way..does that mean ALL women & girls are? No. Does it mean that we should ALL "consent" to being probed prior to an abortion? No. We are all unique & we all make our own choices & one choice one woman/girl makes should NOT reflect upon us all.

Also, yes..I agree with the whole thinking What about rape victims? If Virginia is going to pass this law..they better have a clause for it. If a woman/girl is found to be the victim of rape & a pregnancy evolved from it..she should NOT have to be probed vaginally again. End of story.

this sort of made me sick that you considered this rape.

It can be in a strict sense be considered rape if the state requires that a woman must receive a TRANS-VAGINAL ultrasound before an abortion (if the woman did not want it). To add insult to injury, women must pay for the forced ultrasound. How rude!

Have any of you ever received a trans-vaginal ultrasound? I had one to check for ovarian cysts and hated it. The ultrasound tech instructs you to drink X amount of water before an appointment and shoves a nasty, lubed up wand straight up the vagina. Such a *wonderful* experience.
This move is just another step towards making abortions illegal. More people (women and the unborn) probably will die through illegal, botched abortions. Good job, America.

victims of rape and incest are not required to have an ultrasound with the wand or otherwise. just read that today. I think it was on Yahoo news, but I'm not 100% sure.

@immoral_sensei@xanga - That's the stereotype women have to live with for the rest of our lives only because we are women.

  • MartinTreehouse@xanga

I had to have a ton of vaginal ultrasounds in order to have my daughter because of infertility issues. I could only think of the medical reasons to have a vaginal ultrasound before an abortion, of which there are many.

  • FoliageDecay@xanga

Wow, equating a woman's acceptance to vaginal penetration as an acceptance of any vaginal penetration?
Does that remind anyone of women being raped for adultery in the middle-east?

However, on the topic of the forced procedure, I hesitate to call it rape because I do not want to lessen the extent of the trauma of people who have actually been raped.

However, this is a heinous violation of privacy rights.
Rather than struggling with the complexities of issues that effect real human beings, folks like to be smug, and assign harsh protections to non-persons so they can feel a sense of moral accomplishment.

@imperfect_smash@xanga - I wouldn't say that was a stereotype women have to deal with. Although I have never had to worry about stereotypes like that  to much because of the people I tend to hang around and my personalty.

  • LoveeeLikeASunset@xanga

Most people on here have more common sense than on Datingish. This isn't even close to rape and that's an insult to real rape victims, I'm sure.

  • Ride_Every_Stride@xanga

You left, "without consent" out of your definition. Which changes everything, because obviously you must consent to the exam in order for the exam to commence & you will have been thoroughly informed of the entire procedure & all it entails so unless someone is holding you down & forcing it inside of you, it is not rape & to say it is is an insult to the women who have actually been raped.

If women really want an abortion so badly, they'll still go through it. Maybe it will make them think twice before forgetting their pill or skipping a condom. Of course, I'm not condemning the women who actually were raped & got pregnant because of it. But think of this; they're about to stick a big old tube up your vagina.. if you can handle that but you can't handle a simple vaginal ultrasound, there's something seriously wrong with you.
