  • Ladies: What Do YOU Do When You Have Your Period?

Today I'm feeling lazy, unmotivated, tired, and hungry. I want to eat.

I just wanted to sit on the couch and be fat and lazy and eeeeeeat. Luckily my fiance and I are on this health kick, so there's nothing binge worthy available (unless I wanted to binge on swiss chard...just sayin'). Now after spin class I'm tired, sore, and STILL want to be lazy.

I couldn't figure out why I'm feeling so friggin' sluggish, and then I realized, "Oh crap. My period started today."

Knowing the reason why doesn't make the sluggishness go away, but it does give me more determination to push through it.

If you're like me, that time of month is a week of weakness (hah! A pun!). How do you not give into that desire to be a lazy bum? To be quite honest, some times it's not so bad to use menstruation as an excuse to slow down and become more introverted. Cultures all over the world do this very thing.

No, this doesn't mean it's okay to stuff our faces full of chocolate in the name of expelling cramps. But it does mean it's okay to pamper yourself.

I'm using this week as an excuse to give myself an at home chemical peel. I'm using the Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel from Dr. Dennis Gross Skin Care. It's easy, it's more gentle than what you'd expect, especially given what it does for your skin. I have 10 day pack, which I forgot was lying around, and now I'm going to use it waaaay more often. It's a miracle product.

After the peel, I follow up with a moisturizing mask. The mask I used is being discontinued (it's a small time skin care line that is no longer able to find a supplier), but I recommend finding a mask that is similarly hydrating. The big thing in masks now are ones that come on a sheet and are placed over your face (they have cut outs for eyes, nose, and mouth).

My mask is supposed to be used three times a week for best results, something I've been seriously slacking in, but no longer! This whole week I plan on slathering this honey-oat concoction on my face with pride! Maybe I should refer to that time of the month as "spa week" from now on?

What are your ideas for getting through that time of the month?

    CALCIUM.

If you are lactose intolerant, try  a supplement---but calcium helps cells expand and contract...the very thing that causes "cramps". Our calcium levels plummet just before we get our periods---sort of like driving a car with no oil. So make sure you get some moo juice.  Trade your coffee for a latte...and if you hate milk?

    Dairy foods

    Milk, yogurt, cheese

    Leafy green vegetables

    Broccoli, kale, spinach

    Fruits

    Oranges

    Beans and peas

Tofu, peanuts, peas, black beans, baked beans

    Fish

    Salmon, sardines

    Miscellaneous

Sesame seeds, blackstrap molasses, corn tortillas, almonds, brown sugar

No reason to hurt while you are getting through it....

The two or three days my period lasts are the most productive, most social days of my entire month. I'm not kidding either. I get like some sort of hormone high. Whatever it is. I want more. I get excited for my period.

  • isitreal_no@xanga

wow I didn't know about that calcium thing! I am so gonna do that, not that my periods are all that bad it's still a good tip. And Spa Week omg that's the best thing ever!! I am using that!! haha so I need to book a massage, manicure and pedicure for that week to make me feel better hahaha

  • corporatecrow@xanga

@FallenSafely@xanga - wow, i am really jealous.  only two or three days and they're good days?  fml.

i mostly just try to sleep more because i'm always EXHAUSTED the whole week.  and i eat a lot of chocolate.  yeah, that's my life.

I feel like death when my period comes around. It's comparable to demons stabbing my ovaries from the inside, so generally I sulk in my pain.

I become bitchy and lazy. just wanna lay in bed and eat choco ice cream. Then pass out. Ahhhh, yes, that is my period.

  • deemure@xanga

ohmygawd...this reminds me that I haven't had my period in a while..

I should probably go see a doctor.

  • xIntensity@datingish

    Nothing different,
my period isn't heavy and I don't cramp (unless I skipped a month or more),
but I might be more bitchy than usual ^^

I get really sick when I get my period. I get awful cramps and I throw up from the pain most months. I've tried numerous birth controls but they all mess with my depression and make me feel 10x more irritable and emotional than normal, so I just kind of put up with the pain. I'd rather two days of pain a month than being permanently on the verge of tears.

When my cramps are really bad, I curl up in bed with a hot water bottle, my teddy bear and a Disney film and just get through it. Painkillers and hot chocolate work wonders at making me feel a little better if I'm not busy throwing up, lol.

Now I drink ginger tea and take my supplements and sometimes I use my heating pad lol

the only things that make it bearable for me are strawberry frozen yogurt and dark chocolate (in small amounts). But I crave anything dairy right before it comes....

Im pretty lucky though, 1 day of badass pms, 3 days of uncomfortableness, and then a headache day and then im done. I always go light on the caffeine though, makes cramps worse.
  • notinwonderlandanymore@xanga

@galadrial@xanga - lol, sadly doesn't help if you throw up everything you eat because your cramps are so bad :-/

  • galadrial@xanga

@Nataly Loveless@facebook - Sweeties, if I had a dime for everything they said would "increase my cancer risk" since I was 17, I would OWN Trump. Coffee for instance....and since I have friends who NEVER ate "bad stuff", never smoked, or abused their bodies in any way and STILL got cancer...not buying.

But I am seeing women my age who skipped dairy all their lives and now have osteoarthritis.

I become a lazy bitch on my period...mainly cause I get exhausted a lot sooner and when I'm tired, I get bitchy!! I normally sleep early/ take naps to cure the fatigue and momentarily get rid of the pain. Actually, I have been craving calcium (been drinking milk & eating cheese with crackers, veges, fruit and fish) so now I know why :D either way..I dread my period cause that means not only cramps and fatigue but also acne and sensitivity to temperature change (and sometimes bloating). The only way I get through is by not thinking about it and doing something for myself (massage, curl up with a good book or movie, etc...)

  • misslei11@xanga

I only get my period once or twice a year naturally (unless I'm on birth control) and the last two times (one in November lasted 45 days and I had to go to the ER twice and needed pills to stop the bleeding) and the last one lasted 30 days and I needed to get a D/C. Sooo basically, when that happens, I'm bedridden. It's terrible.

On birth control though, it's pretty normal so, I eat a lot of bananas which help with the terrible cramps, eat more healthy, fruits and veggies, and relax in bed with a heating pad.
  • shes_lump@xanga

I skipped this month... I dont know why. I got cramps and bloating and gained weight but I didnt get a period.

    I'm not pregnant either.

    Hope it shows soon!

  • SimpleCrazyLove@xanga

It's the one time of the month I let myself eat what I want as much as I want. Luckily the wanting to eat everything in sight only lasts for about two days, so I don't feel bad about giving in and being lazy (when I'm not working). Would it be better to resist the cravings and make myself exercise? Yeah, probably. But it feels so much better to stay in pajamas and eat however much chocolate I want.

  • lyrra_askavi@xanga

I do the same things I do when I'm not menstruating, with the exception of I use a Diva Cup. All else is equal. No cramps, no attitude changes, no tiredness.

  • Cosmar@xanga
When I get my period I take like 587 ibuprofen and am extremely irritable!
I am pissy because of the pain, though, I either get a really mild period or one with cramps that lay me flat all day lol.
I eat less on my period ( noticed people saying they eat more!) I do not feel like eating when I am in pain.
I have been taking calcium supplements since it was recommended to me to help with cramps, but I have not noticed a drastic difference yet. :(
  • xOne_twentyX@xanga

My periods are very painful, specially the first day. So, I curl up in bed, stay in fetal position all day long, and get up to get a hot bath to make the  pain go away. The next day I usually feel much better and go to my salsa classes

  • hot_metalhead@xanga

Spa Week...best idea ever, I am so doing that when I get home from my second work tonight.  Usually I don't get cranky, I just get lethargic, and I get cravings for sugar REALLY BAD.  Like to the point where I would freaking punch somebody for ice cream.  Seriously.  This month is especially terrible because I started eating healthier and exercising about a week ago...so the habits aren't stuck yet and it's still hard enough that it feels like a major fight not to give in to the sugar cravings.  Plus I started doing crunches again yesterday, so today it feels like I have a knife stuck in my lower abdomen.  Argh.  But I find that sticking to a regular exercise routine really helps a lot once that time of the months rolls around.

  • berrylipstix@xanga

I'd like to think I have every excuse to stuff my face with chocolate.

  • andweknowthis@xanga

    I don't remember... I haven't had a period for about 13 months :D

  • MZ_BUBBLEZ213@xanga

@FallenSafely@xanga - I thought it was just me! I write I clean (I clean a lot during the 4 days of my period that's how everyone in my house knows). Its just the motivational type of kick that when I want to get things done they get done around that time.
