Hit or Miss: Garage Pizza

It seems like more and more pizza places are embracing vegan cheese and other animal-free options every day, and Downtown LA is definitely a hot spot for this movement. I think I've noticed at least four pizza places in DTLA with vegan options, the most recent one I found being Garage Pizza on 7th St.
I saw their flyer and menu in the lobby of my brother's building, which is a mere block from the Downtown location of Garage. (There's another location in Silverlake.) During their Happy Hour, all pizzas (which are HUGE) are only $16.50. Garage offers vegan cheese on any of their pies, with a fully vegan pizza on the specialties menu that includes vegan cheese and sausage, red onion, green peppers and artichoke hearts.
A proper crust is the base for any good pizza, and Garage doesn't disappoint here. It's super thin and crispy, with that perfect char on the outer rim. The sauce isn't overbearing... just basic tomato, not screaming garlic or herbs like some others.
I'm not sure what kind of vegan cheese they use, but it's definitely not Daiya, which was a refreshing change. The sausage was blatantly Tofurky Italian Sausage... nothing special, but its flavors worked extraordinarily well with the sauce, cheese and veggies. I love artichoke hearts and many of the regular pizza joints don't offer them, so those were a really nice addition.
Because of the extra thin crust, it wasn't the best leftovers the day after since it was a bit soggy. However, for it's convenient location, great Happy Hour prices and that classic pizzeria familiarity, I give Garage Pizza in Downtown LA a HIT.

I'd try it if there were one near me. My son is allergic to dairy proteins and the allergies are getting worse instead of better. He loves pizza but he won't eat it any more unless someone picks the cheese off (or we get it without cheese).
Hmm.. wish I could try it!
I am definitely a big fan of this pizza made this way. So much that you can get from it. Great flavor with the cheese here.
