  • I "PMS"

Yes, it's true. I PMS. One week a month you will find me extremely irritable and prone to angry outbursts. Not that all women are like that when they experience premenstrual syndrome, and not that I am a woman. Actually, what I am referring to is something I call Pre-Military Stress.

As an active reservist, I drill once a month with my unit. However, starting about a week out from the actual drill date, I start getting pretty anxious. I begin wondering what we'll be doing at drill, checking up on my team and squad to ensure they're all prepared, and worrying about how I will perform. There are a lot of expectations placed on us, and also a lot of unknowns.

The unknowns are the worst. Will we be humping this drill? How long will we be in the field? Are they going to change the schedule on us?

With that being said, I have found that some of the best stress relief comes in the form of venting to a fellow unit member. We can talk about our expectations and concerns, and also reassure each other. In the end, drill usually goes pretty smoothly and nothing is as bad as feared. Overactive imaginations tend to get the best of us sometimes though.

Do you have a recurring stressor in your life? How do you deal with it?
