  • Aqua Spinning: Great Cardio for People with Joint Pain!

Spinning classes always offer a great cardio workout, but sometimes it's difficult to keep up with because of joint issues. A fairly new fitness fad that is supposed to diminish joint pain is Aqua Spinning; spinning classes in the pool.

For Aqua Spinning, the stationary bicycles are located underwater; you sit with your waist at water level. The peddles are attached to a wheel with paddles that push the water and add an extra resistance based on your personal intensity. Because the resistance is based on your own output, it is a lot safer for people, as opposed to adding weights.

Although there's a lot more resistance, the water offers buoyancy, so there's less strain on your joints. While peddling, you aren't applying the same amount of pressure to your legs as you would in regular cycling.

It is great for people with arthritis, muscle pain or bone pain. The muscles produce less lactic acid because of the water-related reduction in body temperature and the massage effect provided by contact with the water while pedaling. Because of the support and pressure provided by the water, blood circulation is improved and blood pressure is reduced.

Posture, muscle relaxation and flexibility are also improved. Aqua Spinning is also great for those with back issues; unlike regular spinning classes where your back is hunched over, the water helps keep you afloat and improves your posture. I also think that it's a much more comfortable environment than in an overheated gym room. If you get hot, just splash some water on your face and you're set! I'm also a huge fan of the pool, so just being in it would boost my mood.

I'm definitely going to be on the search for a nearby gym that offers Aqua Spinning. I've always had an interest in spinning, but I was never able to position myself in a way that my back or knees weren't in pain. Spinning classes in the water seem like a much better alternative.

Have you ever gone to an Aqua Spinning class? Would you give it a try?
