  • Why Would I Want to Eat Chia Seeds?

This is a guest post from Heather!

When I first heard of Chia Seeds my mind went immediately to "Cha Cha Cha Chia..." the theme for Chia Pets. Do you remember Chia Pets? Those little clay animals that had Chia Seed "hair" that would grow. Well, the Chia Seeds that are the latest "superfood" are the same thing, with one exception, they are an edible grade grown for human consumption.

  • Product Review: Good Greens Nutrition Bars

You've seen me review all sorts of nutrition bars on this site, but I may have found my favorite. I stay pretty active, so a bar with protein, superfoods and a great taste is always something that appeals to me. If it happens to not be horrendous in calories also, that never hurts. Of course it's always more ideal to eat foods in their whole, natural state, but sometimes time and/or location constraints won't allow that. Enter Good Greens nutrition bars.

  • Restaurant Review: Le Pain Quotidien

When Le Pain Quotidien first opened at Fashion Island in late 2011, I knew I had to try it. Fresh baked organic bread is enough of a draw, but when I found out about the large variety of vegan options available, I made visiting a priority. The bread and bakery chain, with a bunch of locations in New York, Los Angeles and all around the US, has clearly labeled the vegan choices with a (v) right on the menu, making it super easy to order.

I've now had a chance to try plenty of LPQ's vegan items, and have never been disappointed. With that said, I will warn that it is a little pricey. They offer a nice setting and you are served by a waitstaff, so I guess that along with the superior quality of the food justifies paying a premium.

  • Physical Activity For Children

One thing that I really want to do differently from my parents is stress the importance of physical activity.  My mom didn't start exercising until I was in high school and that was only because she wanted to lose weight, not because it is the heart healthy thing to do.

We have them at The Little Gym for a combined age class tumbling/gymnastics class.  We got into gymnastics because it was the activity starting at the youngest age in Charleston, and we needed that outlet since the girls were always with me or with a nanny--I wanted them to get used to having authority figures other than me or the nanny.  More Here...

  • Hit or Miss: Hana Grill

During a grueling day of Christmas shopping at Fashion Island this past December, I was feeling pretty hungry. I could've headed to True Food Kitchen or Wahoo's, but I decided to check out the underground food court to see if there was anything new and vegan down there. What I found was pleasantly surprising. One item on the Hana Grill menu jumped out at me immediately: vegan chicken bowl. More Here...
  • Home-birth Advocate Dies During Childbirth

Caroline Lovell, an Australian home-birth advocate, died during childbirth at her home. She gave birth to her second child, a newborn baby girl who survived the experience. Lovell then unfortunately developed cardiac complications and died after being rushed to the hospital.

Personally I have no beef with home-births as long as a pregnant healthy woman has been given the OK by a doctor beforehand. Hospitals can be so stressful and the experience of being hooked up to a machine for fourteen hours and unable to walk or push on your own without the OB's OK is damned upsetting. More Here...

  • Veggie Chips!

I'm not a fan of vegetables (especially carrots) but it's good to eat them once in a while. I love chips and I love junk food. What better than Veggie Chips?

The first time I tried these, I bought them because I was curious about it. From the first bite, to the last crunch...I fell in love!! More Here...

  • It's Called Kickboxing Because it Kicks Your Butt!

Most people who are interested in fitness or weight loss know that a regular schedule of alternating cardio and Strength training is optimal. Cardio for the most part is my strong point but strength training... well... that needs work. I can end up spending 2 hours at the gym doing cardio but when it comes to the days when I'm supposed to be doing resistance training (RT), after 20 minutes I find myself getting restless. Some a few reps with the free weight here..a go at the row machine there, and I'm ready to throw in the towel! Honestly to me, RT can be a bit on the tedious/boring side.

However, I have found that if I can find new and inventive ways to get strength training in, it is way more enjoyable!

Here is where I'd like to introduce you to the wonderful world of kickboxing. More Here...
