I've been eating brown rice for a while now since my dad can't eat white rice anymore.
When brown rice gets converted to white rice, it loses 67% of the vitamin B3, 80% of the vitamin B1, 90% of the vitamin B6, 60% of the iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids!
But there are so many more health benefits in eating brown rice over white rice:
- Brown rice helps prevent colon cancer
- You can lose weight: People are 49% less likely to gain weight when they eat whole grains instead of refined grains
- The oil in brown rice lowers cholesterol
- Brown rice contains selenium, which is important for thyroid hormone metabolism, antioxidant systems and immune function
- Lowers type 2 diabetes risk
- Helps prevent breast cancer
- It can be good for stomach ulcers
So which is more important - the health benefits in your food, or the taste of it? Do you eat healthier versions of your favorite foods even if they may not taste as good?

I'd say it depends on the persons priorities. If they don't care about their health, then they'll say taste is more important. If they care about their health enough, they'll say health is more important.
I think that a person gets used to things over time. Like with switching from white rice to brown rice; over time they won't think of the differences because they'll get used to brown rice.
i switched to brown rice when i was 10 or 11, i love the texture and taste - way better than white rice which i can't stand. those who are not in my intermediate family say im wasting my parent's money but i have got to say, GO BROWN RICE:)
Health is more important! But Brown Rice is extremely more flavorful and yummy than white rice. Which is why this post confused me for a minute.
I personally find that brown rice taste better anyways and according to this post, it's also healthier... so I don't see why I'd have to choose between health or taste.
lol @ white RACE instead of RICE
I personally think brown rice tastes better (sushi of course being the exception) so it's kind of a non-issue for me.
I don't like the brown stuff; it tastes weird. But I don't eat rice anymore at all (I'm allergic).
MAN!
personally i dont like rice to begin with but i wouldnt mind making the transition from white rice to brown rice. only problem is convincing my parents to buy brown rice instead.
i would choose health over taste but maybe have white rice one day out of the whole week and eat small portions of it. brown rice can be tasty too if you know how to cook it right and pair it with the right foods. brown rice can be tricky to cook though cause if you dont do it right it can be hard to chew but just be sure to add lots of water or soak it in cold water for a few hours first than hot water to soften it than wash and cook it. thats how my friends do it. good hearsay :)
I've got a dumb question. Is brown rice the same as fried rice (only most fried rice may have some extra stuff added)?
i love brown rice! but my mom hates it cause she thinks it tastes really bad and hard. And also all she ate while being pregnant with me was brown rice so now she hates even cooking it. :T
I love brown rice, pasta, bread etc
I really hate hate hate the taste of white anything now it tastes so plain
@thechris38@xanga - hehe
good question- fried rice is actually (typically) white rice that's
stir fried up with soy sauce to give it that brown color. 'definitely
won't find any health benefits here :P
amen!!!
I giggle at your accidental(?) mis-titling of this post.
As a bodybuilder, food is fuel... taste is useless. I don't care what it tastes like, if my body needs it - then it's going in. Often times, in order to get in what I need, I have to force strange concoctions of food in what can only be described as a science fiction nightmare (e.g. uncooked egg whites thrown into cream of wheat with a scoop of protein powder and a few raisins thrown in) and you know what, it doesn't bother me one bit. Big picture vs. instant gratification.
I loveeee white rice, but my mom decided to switch to brown rice a few years ago. So I did eat less rice and was able to lose a few pounds; I don't like the taste very much and it's usually dry, but oh well. But since going to college, I haven't eaten rice much at all...
I've heard that a bowl of white rice is equivalent to four cups of pure sugar. I don't know if that is true but ... it's quite scary, lol. Maybe that's why it tastes so good!
@thechris38@xanga - hehe. well, i think fried rice is white rice with soy sauce and other stuff added. totally different from brown rice... but there may be brown friend rice (i that makes sense)
brown rice is just rice grains that werent processed, and white is the processed one (like white sugar and brown sugar i think)
brown rice is kinda harder to cook...
i suppose brown rice does have its benefits..but has every forgotten that back in those days..people just ate white rice~~ brown rice had no such existance..and yet..those people back in those days are known to be much healthier than we are now despite the lack of technology and skills, etc.~~
perhaps the rice switch doesn't make that much of a difference?~~~ just an interesting though..~~
though i am dying to swtich to brown rice..>.<"~~
I think brown rice tastes better. I love the flavor of it. White rice has its place, on sushi and some other select dishes, but I love brown rice.
i've only ate white rice 'cause of my culture? D:
i looovveee brown rice! (: it tastes sooo good and makes eating really fun! except when i have curry... i'll need basmathi (sp?) rice for that.
In the old days back in China, only the rich were able to eat white rice because of the fact that it takes more effort to make it do to the processing involved. The poor were only able to eat brown rice. Heck if they couldn't even buy much rice, they'd have to eat the rice skin-like things for food. Food isn't nearly as scarce as it was back then. Also, because we have so much choice nowadays, there are bound to be those people who would choose to eat brown rice over white rice by not just health purposes but also for taste reasons. I personally have never had brown rice because my family's Chinese restaurant doesn't have space to include it. Besides that, I don't see myself as missing out. I don't see the need to prolong my life past 70 or 80. The way I see it is that the day my reflexes suck and I can no longer run at 15-20 MPH on foot, I'm useless and therefore should be dead as nature intends for us to be some 20-40 years after reproduction. Also I'd be benefitting the healthcare system a bit if I die sooner as opposed to later. Heck, it's benefitial to the planet and less damage with global warming too. I don't see the point in living once you can't even take care of yourself anymore. I almost died once from drowning and felt like I saw the afterlife, but not for a single moment did I say "I don't want to die." All I said was "Guess I'll gather a few more memories before I go." If you have the absolute desire to live when you're helpless and weak and need someone else to wipe your butt when you go to the bathroom, and need to go back to wearing diapers, go for it. I personally do not support it, but I'm not about to stop people who don't see things my way. Afterall, humans are selfish creatures. If they weren't, global warming and overpopulation would've stopped being a problem already.
@candidShotS@xanga - Another comparison for the record is processed flour versus not so processed flour. When bread is made out of the not as processed flour, it has a rougher texture and is much healthier. Kinda like white bread versus wheat bread
