  • Autism Diet and Nutrient Deficiencies

In celebration of its partnership with Potandon Produce, the Autism Society will share an autism diet and nutrition fact each week throughout April. It is the hope of the Autism Society and Potandon that we can work together to empower you to make the best decisions as they relate to diet for yourself or a loved one with autism. Please note that these tips are meant to be informational. Before making any dietary changes, you should consult a physician. The Autism Society does not endorse any specific form of treatment (See the Options Policy).

Tips were republished from the Autism Advocate article, Autism Diets and Nutrition: Providing Health Benefits for Many Children with ASD. You can read the full article here.

  • Alternative Cardio: Skateboarding is No Longer a Crime

I see many many items marketed to Americans with the intention of aiding their weight loss. From ellipticals to home gyms, it seems that if you have the cash, an easy solution to cardiovascular problems is only a phone order away. In an age where more than half of the nation is obese, I cannot help but feel sad for the culture that has allowed for this issue to become so prominent.

But there is a solution for those who are willing to sustain a few bumps, bruises and scrapes. (Maybe a broken bone or two as well.) More Here...

  • Don't Be Afraid to Have a Better Life

One of the scariest moments in a person's life was the first day of school as a child. Some get accustomed quicker than others. The same is true for someone beginning to exercise in a gym. Unlike starting school as a child, if someone is too intimidated by the gym they can easily quit. This all comes from exercise being viewed as an unpleasant task more than a necessity. Going to the gym, running outside or even exercising at home should not be looked at as a chore, it should be an activity that is looked forward to. More Here...

  • Raising Healthy Kids in an Unhealthy World

How do we keep our kids healthy in a society where 12.5 million of our youth is obese? There are fast food restaurants on every corner and our lives our so hectic we usually don’t get home in time to prepare a healthy meal.  Not to mention that it is just easier and cheaper to get fast food or stock our pantry with canned food, and our freezer with frozen foods.  We spend so much time in the car going from one activity to another that it seems we can’t even find the time for physical activity.

My son started to have weight issues around the age of 4, and I realized that we had to change our lifestyle or he was going to have a really hard time. He always had feeding issues so I became used to giving him easy to eat processed foods.  It soon was the only thing he would eat.  I became complacent.  I didn’t want to hear him throw tantrums so I gave in.  It hit me one day that I actually allowed my toddler to dictate what he was he was going to eat.  He has no knowledge of what is healthy for him, so why in the world did I let him control his diet.  Needless to say, I woke up fast.

  • 4 Easy and Delicious Smoothie Recipes

One of my buddies and I have been trying to make our current healthy kick more fun in order to keep our eyes on the prize (the prize being the impending summer). So, what couldn't be more fun than making refreshing smoothies? I'm not talking about that crap that sounds like it would be good for you but isn't. I'm talking about real fresh fruit, healthy ingredients, benefits. This past week, we've gone through four completely different and totally incredible recipes:

  • How Do You Like Your Coffee?

I'm an avid coffee drinker. I just love the way it picks me up during the day. But it can be quite unhealthy regarding the amount of sugar you have in it. Usually I put 1 teaspoon or less. But recently I had coffee with a friend, and she asked for coffee without any sugar in it! I've never tried this before.

I decided to give it a try, and I have to say, I couldn't taste the difference. It's actually a much healthier approach. More Here...

  • More than Cardio

It has become common in many gym cultures that certain rules are set in place. One is that women stay away from free weights. It seems that this tradition has been set in stone, but its time to break away from this.

Some of the common excuses that women have for not lifting weights are that they do not want to bulk up, they want to lose weigh and only do cardio and many do not know how. The latter is the more acceptable answer.

For those who believe that if they lift weight they will bulk up has just been misinformed. More Here...

  • A Caddy's Workout

Traversing the bustling streets of Manhattan is no easy feat. From honking cabs to burning calves, the streets of the Big Apple are not for those who have not prepared mentally, but more important physically.

While hoofing the streets is a good way to build up leg strength, stretching is key to ensuring that a day on the road does not end with an empty tube of icy hot.
Working as a caddy for four years has instilled many a lesson in endurance upon my soul and the soles of my shoe. Walking five miles with two 40 plus pound bags hanging from my shoulders has taught me to relish in a morning ritual I have created around ridding myself of morning grogginess and stiffness. • Rough Night? Recover with These Hangover Foods

After all the talk about flavored vodkas and chocolate covered pretzel shots, I began thinking about the morning after. Last night I got to know the drink menu at Booker and Dax thoroughly and foresee eating some of this in the near future. More Here...
